THREE GOLDEN BEAR GRAPPLERS PREPARE FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

 

KUTZTOWN, PA - Three Kutztown University wrestlers will be headed to the NCAA Division II National Championships on March 9-10 at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

 

            Joe Kemmerer (jr. Mountaintop/Crestwood HS), Kevin Kalbach (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown HS), and Chris Chambers (so. Holland/Council Rock South HS) all qualified for the national tournament by placing fourth or higher in their respective weight classes at the NCAA East Regional, which was held February 23-24 at UNC-Pembroke.

 

            Kalbach and Chambers will be making their second appearances at the NCAA National tournament, while Kemmerer will be making his first appearance at the Division II Nationals as he is a transfer from Division I UNC-Greensboro.

 

            Kemmerer, a junior, placed first in the 133 lb. weight class at regionals to earn a berth to nationals.  He was a NCAA Division I qualifier at UNC-Greensboro in 2004-05.  Ranked #4 in Division II at 133 lbs, Kemmerer has a record of 28-3, with two pins, five major decisions, and six tech falls this season.  He is slated to face Troy McFarland from Minnesota State-Moorhead in the first round.

 

            Kalbach, a senior, also placed first at regionals at the 157 pound weight class to earn a bid to nationals.  Ranked #7 in Division II at 165 lbs, Kalbach has a record of 15-3 with one pin and three major decisions.  He is set to wrestle Evan Copeland from Adams State in the first round.

 

            Kalbach and Kemmerer were Kutztown's first regional champions since 2000.  

 

            Chambers, a sophomore, won a true-fourth place 149 lb. bout at regionals to earn a national berth.  He has a record of 22-12, with three pins, four major decisions, and a tech fall.  He is matched up against Shea Timothy from Central Oklahoma in the first round.

 

            The NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championship will be held at the Health and Sports Center in Kearney, Neb.  Matches will begin at 11:00 AM (central time) on Friday and 10:00 AM on Saturday.
