GOLDEN BEARS PREPARE FOR PSAC TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
KUTZTOWN, PA - The Kutztown University track & field teams will travel to Shippensburg University for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Outdoor Championships this Thursday-Saturday, May 3-5.
The competition kicks off on Thursday morning at 10:30 AM with the first day of the decathlon and heptathlon. Action continues on Friday at 8:00 AM, with running of the 10,000. The field events will begin with the hammer throw trials at 8:30 AM. On Saturday, field events begin at 9:00 AM, with opening ceremonies at 11:00 AM, followed by the finals for the track events.
Kutztown University's women's track & field team hopes improve on its third place finished at last year's PSAC Outdoor Championship. The men's team placed third at last year.
KU is under the guidance of first year head coach Ray Hoffman. He is also the coach of KU's cross country teams. Hoffman guided the women's team to a third place finish at this year's indoor championships while the men placed fourth.
The men's team is lead by Steve Tyson (jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion), who enters the PSAC Championships as the top seed in the shot put. Tyson's best throw game this past weekend at the Lehigh Games, where he threw a KU record and NCAA provisional distance of 54-1.
Pole vaulter, Brian Dodds (jr. Wyomissing/Wilson), comes to the championships ranked third. Dodds accomplished his best height, 15-0, at the ESU All-American Invitational. Justin Gibbs (jr. Pottstown/Pottstown) is third in the 110 hurdles, with his best time of 14.94, coming at the Lehigh Games.
On the women's side, Renee Marchand (sr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) enters as the second seed in the heptathlon. She set a KU record with 4,596 points at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic.
Stephanie Williams (jr. Harrisburg/Riverside) comes to the championships as the #3 seed in the 3,000. She ran a 10:12.17 at the ESU All-American Invitational. Desiree Bower (sr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) ran the 3,000 steeplechase in 11:19.50 at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic to earn the third seed. Brooke McMurray (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) enters the championships as the third seed in the high jump. McMurray jumped 5-6 at the Lehigh Games.
KU's 4x100 relay team of Corri Speakman (so. Reading/Exeter), Katie Quinn (so. Glenolden/Interboro), Laura Deller (jr. York/Dallastown) and Doofan Tor-Agbidye (so. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) travels to the PSAC Championships ranked third. The team ran a 48.64 at the Lehigh Games.
