FIELD HOCKEY FIRST WOMEN'S TEAM IN KU HISTORY TO BE RANKED NO. 1
KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Kutztown University field hockey team has been
undefeated late in September before under the direction of head coach Betty
Wesner, but the Golden Bears have never been ranked No. 1 - until now.
KU (10-0, 5-0 PSAC), with two wins last week over top 10 teams, moved from
No. 2 to No. 1 this week in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches
Association Division II National Coaches Poll.
It's the first time a women's team at KU has been ranked No. 1 in the
nation. The KU baseball team became the first KU team to be ranked atop a
nationwide poll last spring.
KU field hockey, led by Kelley Healey (jr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) who has a team-high 11 goals and eight assists, will be tested right
away in its first day of being at No. 1. The Golden Bears will travel to No.
2 Bloomsburg tonight for a 6 p.m. contest.
Bloomsburg (8-1, 5-1 PSAC) has a high-powered offense, outscoring its
opposition by an average of five goals a game. The Huskies have 58 goals and
have allowed just nine. They are led by Jamie Vanartsdalen who has 20 goals
and nine assists on the season.
KU has been solid on defense as well, allowing just eight goals in 10 games.
The offense has scored 40, an average 3.89 per game. Keeper Sam Flowers (sr.
Harleysville/Souderton) has collected all 10 wins, two shutouts and has
compiled an 0.82 goals against average.
The Golden Bears are off to their best start since 1997, when KU started
9-0.
