KU FIELD HOCKEY TEAM, PLAYERS RECEIVE NATIONAL ACADEMIC AWARD
KUTZTOWN, PA - Sixteen members of the Kutztown University field hockey team were named to the National Academic Squad by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
            Kutztown was also honored with a 2007 NFHCA Division II National Academic team award, posting the second highest team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.38.  Leading the way was Mansfield University with a 3.42.  Bentley College was third with a 3.35 GPA.  Mercyhurst College was fourth (3.29).  Rounding out the top five awards was C.W. Post (3.29).
            The 16 Golden Bears selected are the most of any team in Division II.  Bloomsburg had 15 players honored, while Mercyhurst had 14.  Kutztown's honorees are:
            Jennifer Belfatti (jr. Hatfield/Lansdale Catholic), a speech pathology major with a 3.64 GPA, was named to the 2007 Longstreth/NFHCA Division II All-America Second-Team, as well as first-team All-PSAC in 2007.
           Monica Detweiler (fr. Souderton/Christopher Dock) is an elementary education major who played in nine games, scoring one goal and registering an assist.  She has a 3.40 GPA.
Courtney Geibel (jr. Mifflintown/Juniata), a biology major with a 3.53 GPA, started all 22 games for the Golden Bears.  She was a 2006 and 2007 All-PSAC second team honoree and a 2005 PSAC Scholar-Athlete.
Carrie Healey (so. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), played in 22 games, starting six, scoring eight goals and tallying four assists, good for 20 points. Her 20 points ranks her fifth on the team. She is a special education major with a  3.40 GPA.
 Jacqueline Healey (fr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), played in two games this season.  She is a medical technology major with a 4.00 GPA.
Kelley Healey (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), biology major with a 3.90 grade-point average, was named to the PSAC Top 10, Healey holds a 3.90 cumulative grade-point average as a biology major. She earned first-team National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-America honors, her third-career All-America award, this season. She tallied 17 goals and set a single-season school record with 14 assists.  Healey was also named to first-team All-PSAC honors.
A secondary education major, Heather Hoxter (sr. Glenmore/Octorara) was named to the NFHCA Academic Squad in 2005, 2006, and 2007 along with being a PSAC Scholar Athlete. In her senior season, Hoxter played in 15 games and scored three goals.   She has a 3.52 GPA.
       Alyssa Matlese (so. Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown), a secondary education-chemistry major, played in 20 games, startging 12, and had six goals and nine assists as a midfielder/back. She has a 3.73 GPA.
Blayke Narehood (fr. Reedsville/Indian Valley) played in 11 games.  Narehood's major is undeclared.  She has a 3.33 GPA.
 Elementary education major Abbey Sheeler (fr. Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) played in 19 games as a freshman, starting two. She had 12 points on the year (4g., 2a.).  She has a 3.80 GPA.
 Whitney Stum (jr. Landisburg/West Perry), a criminal justice major with a 3.38 GPA, started every game for the Golden Bears on defense, scoring two goals and tallying an assist. Stum was also named to the PSAC second-team for the first time in her career, and was a PSAC Scholar-Athlete a season ago.
 Anne Waapu (so. Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) is a psychology major who had a breakout season in her second year, starting 18 of 22 games, and was second on the team with 12 goals. She has a 3.60 GPA.
 Melissa Watson (fr. Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) an electronic media major with a 3.40 GPA, played in three games in net, making nine saves.
 Madison Weary (so. Palmyra/Palmyra), a political science major with a 3.67 GPA, played in seven games for the Golden Bears in her sophomore season.
 Laura Wieder (sr. Emmaus/Emmaus), an elementary education major, played in 14 games and started two of them in 2007. She has a 3.64 GPA.
 Courtney Zook (fr. Oley/Oley Valley) an elementary education major, played in 13 games, and started two.
            The Golden Bears finished the 2007 season with a 17-5 record and 11-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. KU fell to Bloomsburg University in both the PSAC Championship quarterfinals as well as in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
