KU INDOOR TRACK & FIELD HEADED TO PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Kutztown University indoor track and field squads will head to East Stroudsburg for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
The Golden Bears, under second-year head coach Ray Hoffman, will be in search of the fourth title in the last five years for the women, while the men's squad is looking to improve upon its seventh-place finish from a year ago.
The women have a number of athletes capable of bringing home individual PSAC crowns. Doofan Tor-Agbidye (jr. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) has the fourth fastest time in the 55 meter dash (7.43) and fifth fastest time in the 400-meter dash (58.81), an event she placed third in last year's championships. She will also enter as the eighth ranked runner in the 200.
Joanna Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) is also ranked fifth in the mile (5:12.85) and is the eighth seed in the 800. Her best time this season is 2:19.52.
Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside {Ellwood City}) is poised to make an impact in the distance events. She is the top seed in the 5,000 with a conference best 17:46.49 and fifth in the 3,000 with a school-record time of 10:18.66. Last season, Williams placed second in the 5K and was fourth in the 3K at the PSAC Championships.
Kristin Cupido (fr. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) is seeded fifth in the 3K (10:31.84) and the 5K (18:28.21).
Kelly Strickland (fr. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) is ranked third in the pole vault. Strickland's best height this season is 10-10. A year ago at the championships, she placed second. Alison Wise (so. Denver/Garden Spot) is ranked seventh with a mark of 10-4.
Michelle Hughes (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) has the second best throw in the weight throw 50-0 3/4.
KU will enter the championships with three contenders in the long jump, with Alexandra Butler (jr. Montoursville/Montoursville), Kayla Greaves (fr. Exton/Downingtown East) Laura Deller (sr. York/Dallastown) seeded third through fifth. Butler comes in with a season best jump of 17-4, with Greaves (17-3 1/2) and Deller (17-2 1/4) close behind.
KU's distance medley relay is ranked fourth (12:24.19), the 4x800 is ranked fifth (9:57.44) and the 4x400 relay is currently seeded sixth (4:02.52).
On the men's side, KU's top contenders come in the field events, with throwers Jim Dart (sr. Havertown/Haverford) and Steve Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) leading the way. Dart has the PSAC's top shot put of the season with a school-record mark of 55-1. Tyson is ranked second at 53-10 1/2, and is the three-time defending PSAC champion in the event.
Dart is also seeded third in the 35-pound weight throw with a distance of 55-6 1/2. Chris Boutsikaris (so. Andover, NJ/Newtown) is seventh (50-1 3/4) and Jason Rebuck (so. Southampton/William Tennent) is eighth (49-3).
Ian Clark (jr. Troy, NH/Monadnock Regional) is ranked second in the pentathlon (3,196 points), finishing third last year. Cody Hartzler (jr. Belleville/Indian Valley) is currently ranked third in high jump (6-6). He placed second at last year's championships.
Justin Germani (fr. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) is ranked fourth in the pole vault with a distance of 15-3. Mike Kramer (fr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) and Devin Peterson (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) are ranked eighth in the long jump (21-11).
On the Track, KU's top event is likely to be the 55 hurdles, where three athletes are seeded in the top eight. Vonkurt Redley (sr. Philadelphia/Cheltenham) has the PSAC's fifth best time at 7.78 this season. Shane Harvey (fr. Potterburg, N.J./North Hunterdon) is seventh (7.89) and Justin Gibbs (sr. Pottstown/Pottstown) is eighth (7.90).
The men's relays are all seeded in the top seven, with the distance medley relay fourth (10:33.34), the 4x400 relay sixth (3:21.80) and the 4x800 relay seventh (8:24.18).
Events will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday at East Stroudsburg's Koehler Fieldhouse. Tickets are $7 for adults and $2 for seniors and students. Students from PSAC schools will be admitted for free with a student ID.
