KU's RUMMEL DRAFTED BY HOUSTON ASTROS


KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University pitcher Philip Rummel (sr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) was selected by the Houston Astros in the 31st round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Friday.

Rummel, who was the 932nd overall pick, was 7-5 with a 3.11 earned run average in 2008.  The right hander had 62 strikeouts and 16 walks in 75.1 innings pitched.  He finished his career among KU’s all-time leaders in wins with 22 career victories.

He is the tenth Golden Bear since 1997 to be selected in the MLB first-year player draft. Rummel joins seven other Golden Bears currently playing professional baseball, including four who play for MLB affiliated clubs – Mike McCardell (Twins), Ron Chiavacci (Astros), Jason Mills (Orioles), Kyle Sadlowski (Cardinals).
