Mukundan Nandakumar - M Tennis
(sr. Chennai, INDIA)
Mukundan Nandakumar, of the men's tennis team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Nandakumar was a perfect 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles as Kutztown won two of three matches during the week. Nandakumar led KU to PSAC victories over Bloomsburg and Millersville to wrap up an undefeated regular-season conference slate. He also won his singles and doubles matches in KU's hard-fought 5-4 loss to Concordia.

WED 4/13 - KU 11, Albright 10 (at First Energy Stadium) - Kutztown outslugged Albright, 11-10, at the home of the Reading Phillies - First Energy Stadium. The teams combined for 21 runs, 28 hits and a whopping 13 errors - with the majority of the runs and errors coming the eighth inning. The teams combined for 12 runs, 7 hits and nine errors in the eighth inning. All but the first of the runs in the inning was unearned. Phil Cavalcante (sr. Norristown/Kennedy-Kenrick) had a pair of two-out, RBI doubles, both tying the score late in the game, for KU. He was 2-for-3. Kyle Costello (jr. Plains/Coughlin) was 2-for-6 with three RBI, while Paul Koropchak (sr. Pottsville/North Schuylkill), and Josh Fink (jr. Hatfield/North Penn) were 2-for-3 with two RBI apiece. Ryan Loper (so. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) and Kyle Kaschak (jr. New Providence/Solanco) had two hits each for KU. Kyle Sadlowski (jr. Reading/Central Catholic) (6-1) was the winning pitcher. It was his 17th career win, moving him into a tie for fifth place on KU's career list with Rob McCuen (2001-04). Matt Keller (jr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) pitched 1.1 innings in relief for his second save of the season, and the 13th in his career. He tied Steve Fitch (1997-2000) for KU's career record for saves. KU trailed 4-3 in the sixth inning, when Cavalcante bounced a two-out double inside the left field line to score Gary Stricker (jr. Croydon/Conwell Egan Catholic). Albright went up 5-4 in the seventh, but Cavalcante again lined a two-out double to drive in Fink to tie it. John Shade (so. Reading/Muhlenberg) reached first on a passed ball after striking out and the floodgates opened. Costello followed with a two-run single, Matt Jones (fr. Lititz/Warwick) walked with the bases loaded, Bryan Riggins (fr. Glenmoore/Downingtown East) scored on an error and Fink drove in two on a single to put KU up 11-5. In the bottom of the eighth, KU let the Lions back in the game, committing six errors with three AC hits. Albright scored five unearned runs in the inning. Keller came in with two outs. After a runner reached first on catcher's interference and a walk to load the bases, Keller got a line out to right field to end the threat. Albright was not finished. In the bottom of the ninth, the Lions got runners at first and third with two outs, but Keller induced ground out to end the game.
FRI 4/15 - Mansfield 4, KU 3 - Mansfield scored three runs in the third and the eventual game winner in the fourth to defeat Kutztown 4-3. Kutztown took the lead on a solo homer by Loper in the second, but Mansfield plated three runs to take the lead in the third. KU cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth when Tony Riegel (sr. Exeter/Exeter) doubled in Fink, but Mansfield answered with a run of its own in the fourth. Mike McCardell (fr. West Chester/Henderson) drove in Clay Kuklick (sr. North Wales/North Penn) on a groundout in the fifth. Fink was 2-for-3. Matt Maradeo (jr. Nesquehoning/Panther Valley) (4-5) took the loss, he struck out nine batters.
Mansfield 4, KU 3 - Kutztown fell behind early and a late rally came up short as Mansfield completed the sweep, 4-3. Mansfield scored twice in the third to take the lead. Loper singled in Jeff Craig (so. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) for a run in the sixth, but the Mountaineers went up 4-1 with a two-spot in its half of the sixth. KU rallied in the seventh, scoring a run on a single by Stricker, and another on a bases-loaded walk by Costello with one out. KU however, saw its chances end on a double play. Sadlowski (7-2) was the losing pitcher, allowing seven hits and four runs with four Ks.
SAT 4/16 - MANSFIELD 7, KU 4 - Loper was 2-for-3 with three RBI, but it was not enough as Mansfield defeated Kutztown 7-4 in the first game of a PSAC East doubleheader at North Campus Field. MU built a 4-0 lead in the fourth, but Loper belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Mountaineers' lead in half. MU, though, answered with two runs in the fifth to go up 6-2. In KU's half of the fifth, Costello and Loper hit back-to-back RBI singles to again pull the Bears within two, 6-4.
KU 2, MANSFIELD 1 -Keller tossed a five-hitter, with 10 strikeouts, to lead Kutztown to a 2-1 win in game two of the doubleheader vs. Mansfield. Keller continually worked out of jams, as the Mountaineers got base runners on in each of the first six innings. MU plated its lone run on an RBI single in the second. KU got both of its runs in the third, when Koropchak singled and scored on Craig's triple. Craig, who was 2-for-3, later scored on Costello's base hit. Keller is now 8-1 on the season, and moves into a tie for fifth place on KU's career wins list with Rob McCuen and Sadlowski (17).

FRI 4/15-SAT 4/16 - GOLDEN BEAR INVITATIONAL (3rd/5) - The Golden Bears finished third as they hosted the Golden Bear Invitational at the par 74, 5,950-yard Berkleigh Country Club. Holly Shubilla (so. Wilkes-Barre-GAR Memorial) shot an 84-82-166 to finish third overall and lead KU. Tristen Suzenski (so. Pottstown/St. Pius X) finished her 36 holes with a 92-86-178, good for a tie for sixth place. Amy Miller (fr, Schuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) shot a 92 and a 93 for total of 185 and tied for 12th. The fourth Kutztown scorer was Angie Petak (fr. Brockway/Brockway) with a 100-90-190. She finished 16th. KU had a team total of 719, which placed the team third. Lehigh's 696 edged out McDaniel College by one stroke for the team victory. The winning golfer from McDaniel shot a 76-76-152.

MON 4/11 - INDIANA (PA) 6, KU 3 - The Golden Bears mustered just four hits and fell 6-3 to Indiana (PA) in game one of a doubleheader. Three of KU's hits came in the fourth inning, including a bases-clearing double by Jennifer Lincoln (fr. Stafford/North Stafford) that scored Jackie Messina (fr. Allentown/Parkland), Erin Livingston (sr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Carroll) and Tarin Horonzy (fr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood). Kutztown's only other hit was a single by Sam Flowers in the second inning. IUP scored three runs in the seventh inning to secure the win.
KU 9, INDIANA (PA) 1 - Kutztown erupted for nine runs in the first two innings to salvage a split with IUP, 9-1. Lindsay Bennett (fr. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) was 2-for-3 with five RBI to lead the charge. Livingston drove in two runs and was 2-for-3, while Adriane Willmer (so. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Stacey Denlinger's (jr. Harleysville/Souderton) (8-4) no-hit and shutout bid were ended when IUP hit a home run in the fourth inning. She allowed just one other batter to reach base on an error, and had four strikeouts in the five-inning victory. Willmer started the rally in the first inning, tripling and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Denlinger. Livingston followed with an RBI single, and Bennett laced a three-run double to make it 5-0. In the second, Livingston added another RBI single, Horonzy bunted home another run and Bennett ripped a two-run double to give KU a 9-0 lead.
WED 4/13 - SHIPPENSBURG 4, KU 2 - An error with the bases empty and two outs in the seventh inning led to four Shippensburg runs and the Red Raiders came from behind to beat Kutztown, 4-2, in game one of a PSAC East doubleheader. Kutztown took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. Sam Flowers (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) was hit by a pitch, and Cheryl Griffith (sr. Bethlehem/Freedom) followed with a bunt single. Dani Spalik (so. Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) singled and the Shippensburg leftfielder misplayed the ball, allowing Flowers to score. Willmer then singled home Griffith. In the seventh, KU hurler Rachel Weidensaul (fr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) retired the first two Shippensburg batters before a miscue put a runner on first. The next four Raider batters all got hits, resulting in four runs. Weidensaul went the distance in the circle for KU, allowing four unearned runs.
SHIPPENSBURG 5, KU 4 -Horonzy hit a game-tying home run in the third inning, but Shippensburg scored two runs in the fourth to sweep the doubleheader, 5-4. The Raiders scored three runs in the top of the second to start the scoring. KU answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning, when Spalik scored on an error by the SU third baseman. The next inning, Horonzy hit a two-run bomb that scored Messina to tie the game at 3-3. Shippensburg answered with a two-run shot of its own in the top of the fourth. Kutztown added a run in the sixth inning when pinch runner Malarie Caserta (fr. Philadelphia/West Catholic) scored on the final of the Raiders' four errors in the ballgame. Willmer and Messina went 2-for-4 to lead Kutztown.
FRI 4/15 - KU 3, WEST CHESTER 2 -Messina was 3-for-3 and drove in what proved to be the winning run in the second inning of KU's 3-2 win over West Chester. Willmer, Bennett and Spalik were all 3-for-3 in the game. KU scored in the first when Willmer stole third and advanced home on an error by the catcher. In the second, Lincoln drew a pinch hit, bases loaded walk and Messina singled to drive in Spalik for a 3-0 lead. In the seventh, West Chester scored a run after a two-out KU error, then another on a single to center field. Willmer fielded the ball and threw out a runner trying to score the tying run from second to end the game. Griffith (7-5) was the winning pitcher, allowing seven hits, two unearned runs and striking out four.
WEST CHESTER 3, KU 2 - West Chester scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to defeat Kutztown 3-2 in the nightcap. Spalik was 3-for-3, Megan Alexander (so. Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Willmer scored one run and drove in KU's other run. WCU went up 2-0 in the third, but KU battled back. In the bottom of the third, Willmer singled and scored on Alexander's double and in the fifth, Willmer drove in Griffith on a sacrifice fly to tie it.
SAT 4/16 - KU 6, MILLERSVILLE 4 - Flowers hit a three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Kutztown to a 6-4 win over Millersville in game one of a PSAC East doubleheader. The Golden Bears got on the board first with two runs in the first inning. Messina scored on a Horonzy single, who then came home on a double by Livingston. Millersville scored one run in the second and three in the third to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Kutztown scored a run when Livingston stroked her second double of the game to plate Messina. Flowers then cracked her game-winning bomb that scored pinch runners Caserta and Alexander the following inning. Griffith scattered four hits in 4.2 innings of scoreless relief for her eighth win of the year. Livingston was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Horonzy went 2-for-2, scoring once and driving in a run. Messina scored twice.
MILLERSVILLE 5, KU 2 - Kutztown managed just four hits as Millersville rebounded to pick up the win in game two, 5-2. Griffith started inside the circle and took the loss. She went the first four innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. Griffith struck out five Marauder batters. Kutztown scored its runs in the fourth and seventh innings. Dani Wunderlich (so. Douglasville/Daniel Boone) led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple and scored on a Messina single. The Golden Bears did not get another hit until the seventh, when Horonzy singled and Bennett doubled to put runners on second and third. With Lincoln at the plate, the Millersville catcher tried to pick Bennett off second. Her throw hit Lincoln's bat and Horonzy came into score. Messina was 1-for-2 with two stolen bases.

WED 4/13 - KU 7, Bloomsburg 2 - The Golden Bears won seven of nine matches to remain undefeated and break a first-place tie with Bloomsburg atop the PSAC standings. KU took two of the three doubles matches behind Mukundan Nandakumar (sr. Chennai, INDIA) and Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta, INDIA) at first doubles and Lukas Beman (so. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) and Ilja Semjonovs (jr. Liepaja, LATVIA) at third doubles. Kutztown won five of the six singles matches, as well. Sharma (first), Nandakumar (second), Radoslaw Hlubinski (jr. Warsaw, POLAND) (third), Somdeep Appineni (so. Hyderabad, INDIA) (fifth) and Beman (sixth) all won singles matches. Kutztown improved to 4-0 in the PSAC, and handed the Huskies their first conference defeat.
FRI 4/15 - CONCORDIA (NY) 5, KU 4 - Kutztown suffered its first defeat of the season with a 5-4 loss vs. regional foe Concordia (NY) Friday afternoon at Keystone Courts. KU won two of the three doubles matches, but captured just two of six singles pairings. Nandakumar and Sharma won at first doubles and Beman and Semjonovs were winners at third doubles. Nandakumar (second) and Semjonovs (fourth) won singles matches.
SAT 4/16 - KU 9, MILLERSVILLE 0 - Kutztown wrapped up an undefeated PSAC regular season with a 9-0 win over Millersville Saturday afternoon at Keystone Courts. Nandakumar and Sharma won at first doubles, Hlubinski/Appineni at second and Semjonovs/Beman completed the sweep at third doubles. Nandakumar (first), Sharma (second), Hlubinski (third), Appineni (fourth), Beman (fifth) and Nick Gallagher (fr. King of Prussia/Upper Merion) (sixth) all won in straight sets.

WED 4/13 - Bloomsburg 5, KU 4 - A default loss at sixth singles snapped Kutztown's 10-match win streak with a 5-4 loss at Bloomsburg. The match also broke a first place tie in the PSAC East between the two squads. Kerstin Kloeffer (so. Ludwigs Hafen, GERMANY) and Amy Withers (fr. Essendon, AUSTRALIA) picked up the Golden Bears only win in doubles play at first doubles. The two players also won matches at first and second singles. Priya Pachkawde (so. Nasik, INDIA) won at third singles, but Bloomsburg took the fourth and fifth seeds, then saw its lineup protest upheld by the PSAC to cause KU to default its #6 singles victory and give the Huskies the win.
SAT 4/16 - KU 6, MILLERSVILLE 3 - Kutztown laid claim to the PSAC East's #2 seed in next weekend's conference playoffs with a 6-3 win over Millersville. KU swept the doubles competition. Kloeffer/Withers picked up the win at first doubles. Jharna Nansi (so. Mumbai, INDIA) and Pachkawde won at second doubles and Bianca Blatz (fr. Ludwigs Hafen, GERMANY) teamed with Lauren Losoncy (jr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) for the win at third. Withers (second), Losoncy (fifth) and Kristen Bodalski (jr. Media/Cardinal O'Hara) (sixth) won singles matches.

FRI 4/15-SAT 4/16 - at Bucknell Classic (no team scores) Men: Kutztown picked up a 1-2 finish in the pole vault at the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell. Jesse Chew (so. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) cleared 15-3 to win the event, while Mike Provenzano (jr. Carlisle/Carlisle) also cleared 15-3, but finished second. Both Golden Bear relays also won. The 4x400-meter relay of Dave Bartolomucci (sr. Exeter.Exeter), Billy Boorse (so. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley), Steve Hixson (fr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) and Tony Hegedus (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) won in 3:17.17. The 4x100 team of Bartolomucci, Jake Wieder (fr. Macungie/Emmaus), De'Andre Pearson (sr. Norristown/Norristown) and Chris Patterson (fr. West Chester/Henderson) tied for first running a 42.36. Hegedus ran an NCAA provisional time of 52.66 to finish second in the 400 hurdles. Wieder's 10.99 in the 100 gave him second place. Bartolomucci notched a third-place finish of 49.71. Dan Wilson (so. Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham) threw the javelin 196-4 to finish third. In the discus, Steve Tyson (fr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) finished sixth with a throw of 136-3. Boorse was seventh in 1:56.09.
Women: Steph Sukal (sr. New Tripoli/Northwestern Lehigh) tied for first in the pole vault, clearing 11-3 3/4 to lead KU at the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell. Alison Maurer (jr. Lewisberry/Northern York) and Christine Procopio (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) had NCAA provisional marks in the hammer. Maurer finished fourth with a throw of 174-5, while Procopio had a throw of 163-10. Molly Lare (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) ran an NCAA provisional time of 17:47.03 in the 5,000-meter run. The 4x400 relay of Janelle Kostishion (sr. Hilltown/Pennridge), Sara Otis (sr. Wyalusing/Wyalusing Valley), Renee Marchand (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) and Laura Kline (jr. Reading/Reading) took third in 3:57.06. Candice Bullard (sr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) tied for third in the high jump by clearing 5-3. Kline was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:04.47, just .11 ahead of Otis, who finished fifth. Elizabeth Lord (sr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) threw the discus 138-6, good for fourth place. Amy Schaeffer (jr. Richland/ELCO) was sixth in the triple jump at 35-9.
