Harsh Sharma - M Tennis
(jr. Calcutta, INDIA)
Harsh Sharma, of the men's tennis team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Sharma led the Golden Bears to the PSAC Championship, KU's fifth in the last six years. Sharma won both his doubles and singles matches in KU's semifinal win over Slippery Rock, and the championship match vs. Bloomsburg.

TUE 4/19 - KU 10, Shippensburg 6 - Kutztown erupted for five runs in the first inning, and went on to a 10-6 win over PSAC West foe Shippensburg in a non-league contest. Josh Fink (jr. Hatfield/North Penn) blasted a three-run home run to cap the first inning rally that also featured an RBI single by Kyle Costello (jr. Plains/Coughlin) and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Loper (so. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley). Ship got to within 5-2 in the third, but Costello knocked a two-run single in the fourth to make it 7-2. Ship got within 7-6, but KU iced the game with three runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Loper and Tony Riegel (sr. Exeter/Exeter), while Fink scored on a double-steal attempt. Costello was 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs, while Fink was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs. Jeff Craig (so. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) was 3-for-5 with two runs, and Loper was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Riegel was 2-for-5. Philip Rummel (fr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) pitched the first four innings, and was relieved by Justin Jachowicz (fr. Summit Hill/Panther Valley) (2-1), who got the win pitching the next four frames. Jachowicz allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Matt Maradeo (jr. Nesquehoning/Panther Valley) pitched a scoreless ninth.
FRI 4/22 - KU 17, MILLERSVILLE 4 - Kutztown scored four runs in the first and never looked back, pounding Millersville 17-4 in game one of a PSAC East doubleheader. Paul Koropchak (sr. Pottsville/North Schuylkill) and Scott Senna (sr. North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) each had two-run singles in the first to put KU ahead 4-0. Koropchak, 2-for-2 with four RBI, drove in two more in the second with a triple, and then scored on an error by the Millersville third baseman. In the fourth, Kutztown loaded the bases with one out. Pinch hitter Phil Cavalcante (sr. Norristown/Kennedy-Kenrick) walked to score a run, and Senna followed with an RBI single. An RBI groundout by Jon Moyer (so. Oley/Oley Valley) and a two-run single by Kyle Kaschak (jr. New Providence/Solanco) capped the scoring for KU in the inning. Costello tripled home a run in the fifth, and scored on a groundout by John Shade (so. Reading/Muhlenberg). Costello, Shade and Bryan Riggins (fr. Glenmoore/Downingtown East) all drove in runs in Kutztown's three-run sixth inning. Maradeo benefited from the Golden Bears' offensive outburst. He tossed the first four innings to improve to 5-5. He surrendered just three hits and struck out seven. Senna was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in. Costello went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Mike McCardell (so. West Chester/Henderson) was 2-for-2 and scored twice. Riggins was also 2-for-2.
MILLERSVILLE 6, KU 4 - Millersville scored four runs in the final four innings to come from behind and beat KU, 6-4, in game two of the doubleheader. Costello put Kutztown on the board in the bottom of the first with a single that scored Clay Kuklick (sr. North Wales/North Penn). Millersville answered back with two runs in the top of the second to put the Marauders up 2-1. In the bottom of the inning, Kuklick had an RBI single that scored Riegel, and then scored on another Costello single as Kutztown went back ahead 3-2. The Golden Bears made it 4-2 in the third when Cavalcante doubled and later scored on an error by the Millersville shortstop. Millersville scored once in the fourth to make it 4-3, then went ahead with two in the fifth. A run in the top of the seventh capped the scoring. Costello went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Kuklick scored twice and Riegel was 2-for-4.
SUN 4/24 - KU 7, Millersville 0 - McCardell and Jachowicz combined on a two-hitter and six Millersville errors led to all seven KU runs in a 7-0 win over the Marauders in game one of a PSAC East doubleheader at McWilliams Field in York, PA. McCardell held Millersville to just one hit in the first six innings as he improved to 4-3. He also walked three and struck out five. Jachowicz allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh to complete the shutout. Kutztown scored five runs in the fourth on four hits and three Millersville errors. Craig had Kutztown's only RBI of the game with single to score Kuklick in the inning. Kuklick was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Gary Stricker (jr. Croydon/Conwell Egan Catholic) and Shade each stole a base and scored.
KU 8, Millersville 2 - Fink went 3-for-3, doubled twice, scored two runs and drove in two more as Kutztown completed the sweep of Millersville, 8-2. Matt Keller (jr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) won his team-high ninth game of the season, tossing five innings of one-hit ball. He fanned three and allowed the first MU run. Millersville's sloppy fielding continued in game two, as Kutztown scored four unearned runs as the result of four Marauder errors. Fink had an RBI double in the second inning that scored Loper, and later scored on an error. Kuklick had an RBI single in the inning to cap the inning. The Golden Bears added three more runs in the third inning. Loper had an RBI single to score Shade and later scored himself on a Riegel single. Kuklick added a sac fly in the frame. Loper was 1-for-2 in the game with three runs scored and an RBI. Kuklick drove in two and was 1-for-3. Kuklick, Koropchak, Shade and Loper each had a steal.

FRI 4/22 - at Lehigh Invitational (2nd/5) - Holly Shubilla (so. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) posted the low round of 85 to win the Lehigh Invitational and help Kutztown to second place finish in the tournament. It was Shubilla's first win in her career. Amy Miller (fr. Shuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) tied for 12th with a 97. Angela Petak (fr. Brockway/Brockway) shot a 98 to finish 15th and Tristin Suzenski's (so. Pottstown/St. Pius X) 99 gave her 16th place. Kutztown shot a 379 to finish second. Lehigh won the event at the par-73, 5,939-yard Saucon Valley Country Club with a team score of 359.

TUE 4/19 - KU 5, MANSFIELD 1 - Tarin Hornozy (fr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) continued to fare well against Mansfield pitching, going 2-for-2 with three RBI to lead KU to a 5-1 win. Horonzy, who had six RBI in the first doubleheader against Mansfield, drove in Adriane Willmer (so. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) on a single in the first, then plated two runs on a double as part of a four-run third. She scored on Lindsay Bennett's (fr. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) two-run double later in the inning. Dani Wunderlich (so. Douglasville/Daniel Boone) was 2-for-2. Rachel Weidensaul (fr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) (7-5) went the distance, striking out three Mounties and allowing seven hits.
KU 5, MANSFIELD 1 - Jennifer Lincoln (fr. Stafford/North Stafford) hit a walk-off, two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to lift KU to a 5-4 win and the sweep of Mansfield. Erin Livingston (sr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Carroll) and Stacey Denlinger (jr. Harleysville/Souderton) each singled in the inning and were replaced by pinch runners Kathy Gregg (fr. Narvon/Garden Spot) and Caitlin Hague (fr. Lansdale/North Penn). After a groundout advanced the pair to third for the second out, Lincoln pinch-hit and skidded a low, one-hopper past the Mountaineers' second baseman that scored both runners. Bennett (1-2) threw six innings of relief to pick up her first career win. She overcame five walks by allowing just two hits. Horonzy was 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the first inning. Livingston also had an RBI in the inning as KU led 2-0. The Mountaineers scored three in the top of the second, but the Golden Bears answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Denlinger scored on an error by the third baseman. Mansfield scored a run in the fifth to reclaim the lead 4-3.
FRI 4/22 - KU 5, BLOOMSBURG 3 -Horonzy belted a three-run home run in Kutztown's five-run sixth inning to give Kutztown the 5-3 win and a berth in the PSAC Playoffs. Willmer got the sixth-inning rally started, reaching on a hit-by-pitch. After Wunderlich singled for KU's first hit of the game, Jackie Messina (fr. Allentown/Parkland) doubled Willmer home. Horonozy then hit her game-winning homer to left field. KU added an insurance run when Bennett scored on an error. Denlinger was the winning pitcher, striking out nine batters over seven innings. With the win, KU clinched the PSAC East's #3 seed in next week's playoffs. The loss by Bloomsburg also secured the #1 spot, and the right to host the playoffs, for Shippensburg.
BLOOMSBURG 6, KU 3 - Bloomsburg scored three unearned runs in the first inning that proved to be the difference, as the Huskies pulled out the split, 6-3. With two outs and two on in the first, a fielding error prolonged the inning, and loaded the bases. Bloomsburg tripled to right field to drive in all three runs. BU added two in the second to make it 5-0. Kutztown scored twice in the third, when Willmer scored on an error and Messina scored on a double by Bennett. After the Huskies went up 6-2 in the fourth, KU rallied in the seventh. Dani Spalik (so. Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) doubled and scored on an error, but KU could come no closer. Willmer was 3-for-4.
SUN 4/24 - East Stroudsburg 9, KU 1 - Kutztown was held to just one hit, as East Stroudsburg defeated the Golden Bears 9-1 in five innings in the first game of a PSAC East doubleheader. Livingston singled in the second for KU's only hit of the contest. A pair of Warrior errors allowed Wunderlich to reach base and score the lone Kutztown run in the fourth inning.
KU 5, East Stroudsburg 2 -Horonzy clubbed a two-run home run in the fifth inning as Kutztown rebounded for a 5-2 win in game two of the doubleheader. Horonzy finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and three runs batted in. Weidensaul turned in a complete game inside the circle, allowing just three hits and two walks. She improved to 8-6. Kutztown jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Bennett singled and scored on an error, and Spalik's RBI single scored Lincoln. Horonzy's two-run shot extended the lead to 4-0 and KU added another run in the seventh when Wunderlich doubled and scored on a Horonzy single. Bennett was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Messina scored on Horonzy's homer.

Last Week's Action
MON 4/18 - KU 5, DOWLING 4 - Kutztown defeated East Region foe Dowling, 5-4, at Keystone Courts Monday. The match was tied at 4-4 with just fourth singles left to complete. KU's Somdeep Appineni (so. Hyderabad, INDIA) bounced back from a 6-2 loss in the first set, to win 6-3 and clinch the match with a 7-5 nail biter. Ilja Semjonovs (jr. Liepaja, LATVIA), Lukas Beman (so. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) and Nick Gallagher (fr. King of Prussia/Upper Merion) also won singles matches. KU also won at third doubles with the duo of Semjonovs and Beman.

FRI 4/22 - KU 5, Slippery Rock 0 - Kutztown defeated Slippery Rock, 5-0, to advance to the PSAC Championship match. Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta, INDIA) and Mukundan Nandakumar (sr. Chennai, INDIA) won at first doubles, Radoslaw Hlubinski (jr. Warsaw, POLAND) and Appineni were winners at second doubles, and Semjonovs and Beman completed the doubles sweep with a win at third doubles. Nandakumar and Sharma won at first and second singles to seal the win for the Golden Bears.
SUN 4/24 - KU 5, Bloomsburg 0 - Kutztown defeated Bloomsburg, 5-0, Sunday morning to claim the PSAC Championship. Kutztown, which won its school-record 18th match of the season, won all five matches in the championship victory. The PSAC crown gives KU its fifth conference title in six years. Sharma/Nandakumar, Hlubinski/Appineni and Semjonovs/Beman once again led KU to a sweep in the doubles matches. Kutztown then won the two completed singles matches, behind Sharma at second singles and Hlubinski at third singles. Both players won in straight sets.

FRI 4/22 - KU 5, California (PA) 1 - Kutztown defeated California (PA), 5-1, to advance to the PSAC championship match. Kerstin Kloeffer (so. Ludwigs Hafen, GERMANY) and Priya Pachkawde (so. Nasik, INDIA) won at first doubles, and Amy Withers (fr. Essondon, AUSTRALIA) and Jharna Nansi (so. Maharashtra, INDIA) picked up a point at second doubles. KU won all three completed singles matches. Pachkawde won at third singles, Nansi at fourth and Bianca Blatz (fr. Ludwigs Hafen, GERMANY) at sixth singles to clinch the win for KU. All three won in straight sets.
SUN 4/24 - Bloomsburg 4, KU 4 - With the score tied 4-4, inclement weather forced the PSAC Championship match to be called. The match officially ends as neither a win, loss, nor tie for either team, but Bloomsburg wins the title due to the fact the Huskies won the regular-season meeting between the two teams. The match at No. 1 singles was still in play when sleet began to fall in Bloomsburg, making court conditions unplayable. Kloeffer and her opponent had split the first two sets and Kloeffer led 5-2 in the third when the match was called. The two teams had already been on the courts for over seven hours with several weather delays. The Golden Bears match their best PSAC finish in school history. Kutztown also finished second in 1993. Kloeffer/Pachkawde won at first doubles and Withers/Nansi won at second doubles. In singles, Withers was a winner at second singles and Lauren Losoncy (jr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) got KU a point with a win at fifth singles.

FRI 22-SAT 4/23 - GOLDEN BEAR MULTIS
Men: Justin Reichardt (fr. Birdsboro/Twin Valley) won the men's decathlon at the Golden Bear Multis with a total of 5,753 points. Reichardt won four of the ten events. Teammate Ian Clark (fr. Troy, NH/Monadnock Regional) placed third with 5,014. The duo competed against athletes from East Stroudsburg, Albright and Gloucester County CC, as well as Division I Villanova.
Women: Renee Marchand (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) won the women's heptathlon with a PSAC season-best total of 4,168 points. The score is over 100 points higher than any other in the PSAC this season. She won three of the seven events, competing against athletes from Millersville, East Stroudsburg and Albright, as well as Division I schools Temple and Lafayette.
SUN 4/24- at Lafayette Invitational (individual competition)
Men: Tony Hegedus (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) won the 400-meter hurdles as Kutztown competed at the Lafayette Invitational. His winning time was 53.52. Mike Provenzano (jr. Carlisle/Carlisle) tied for first in the pole vault by clearing 14-1. Teammate Jesse Chew (so. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) was tied for fourth at 13-1. Dan Wilson (so. Horsham/Hatboro-Horsham) finished second in the javelin with a throw of 193-11. Jim Kelly (so. Ambler/Upper Dublin) was fifth at 169-01. Steve Tyson (fr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) had the second place throw in the shot put at 49-8 1/4. In the 100, De'Andre Pearson (sr. Norristown/Norristown) placed third with a time of 11.10. Dave Bartolomucci (sr. Exeter/Exeter) took third in the 400 with a lap of 49.36 and Matt Carroll (jr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) was fifth in the event with a 50.51. Kurt Redley (fr. Elkins Park/Cheltenham) ran a 15.24 in the 110 hurdles to claim third place. Jordan Frank (fr. Cressona/Blue Mountain) finished fourth in the high jump, topping 6-0. Joe Haughey (so. Richboro/Council Rock South) completed the steeplechase in fifth place with a time of 10:26.36. Benn Trasatt (fr. Mohrsville/Shuylkill Valley) threw the discus 128-2, good for fifth place. Cornel Crawford (sr. Wilkes-Barre/Meyers) was sixth in the triple jump at 40-10 1/2.
Women: The Golden Bear women won three of the four throwing events at the Lafayette Invitational. Elizabeth Lord (sr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) posted the best mark in the discus in the PSAC this season with a winning throw of 140-10. Kaleena Lockard (sr. Berwick/Berwick) took the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 43-10. Alison Maurer (jr. Lewisberry/Northern York) heaved the hammer 168-4 to win the hammer throw. Jenelle Stoner (jr. Denver/Cocalico) was third in the discus at 120-5 and Maurer was fourth at 120-2. Christine Procopio (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) was fifth in the hammer with a 151-8. Procopio also finished third in the triple jump at 34-8 1/2. Steph Sukal (sr. New Tripoli/Northwestern Lehigh) finished second in the pole vault, clearing 11-0. Laura Kline (jr. Reading/Reading) ran an NCAA provisional time of 1:03.05 in the 400-meter hurdles to take third place. Sara Otis (sr. Wyalusing/Wyalusing Valley) was fourth at 1:03.62. Danielle Mousley (sr. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) ran the 1500 in 4:45.04 for third place. Candice Bullard (sr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) high jumped 5-1 to tie for third in that event. Amy Schaeffer (jr. Richland/ELCO) was fourth in the triple jump at 34-7 1/2. Laura Deller (fr. York/Dallastown) finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 15-4 3/4.
