Ryan Loper - Baseball
(so. Boiling Springs/Cumerland Valley)
Ryan Loper, of the baseball team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Loper led the Golden Bears to a pair of victories in its first weekend at the Savanna Invitational in Georgia. Loper was the winning pitcher in Kutztown's 11-5 win over previously unbeaten Armstrong Atlantic State, pitching five innings on Saturday. He then drove in three runs on a pair of hits in KU's key regional victory over California (PA) Sunday.

SAT 3/5-SAT 3/12 - at Savannah (GA) Invitational
SAT 3/5 - KU 11, Armstrong Atlantic State 5 - Kutztown handed Armstrong Atlantic State its first loss of the season with an 11-5 victory in KU's first action at the Savannah Invitational, hosted by AASU. Clay Kuklick (sr. North Wales/North Penn) went 4-for-5 at the dish with three RBI and three runs. Scott Senna (sr. North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Jeffrey Craig (so. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) also had a pair of hits and three RBI. Kyle Costello (jr. Plains/Coughlin) went 2-for-5, while Gary Stricker (jr. Croydon/Conwell Egan-Catholic) was 3-for-3 and scored three times. Senna, Craig, Stricker and Jon Moyer (so. Oley/Oley Valley) all doubled. Ryan Loper (so. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) started and got the win. He went five innings and struck out three. Phil Rummel (fr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) hurled the last four innings to get the save. The Golden Bears scored four runs in the fourth, behind RBI singles from Kuklick and Costello. In a three-run seventh inning, Kuklick added another run scoring knock and Craig had a two-out, two run double. Kutztown ended the Pirates 13-game season-opening win streak.
SUN 3/6 - Montevallo 4, KU 1 - The Golden Bears dropped a 4-1 decision to Montevallo at the Savannah Invitational. Craig and Loper each went 2-for-4 at the plate for KU. Kyle Sadlowski (jr. Reading/Central Catholic) pitched six innings and took the loss, allowing three earned runs. He struck out eight, while allowing seven hits and issuing two walks. Justin Jachowicz (fr. Summit Hill/Panther Valley) threw two innings of relief, allowing one run. Kutztown scored its only run in the first inning when Craig scored on a two-out single by Loper.
KU 7, California (PA) 1 - Kutztown rebounded from a loss earlier in the day to beat California (PA), 7-1, at the Savannah Invitational. The Golden Bears led 2-1 before a five-run outburst in the sixth inning sealed the game. With the bases loaded and one out, two runs scored on an error by the Cal third baseman. Loper followed with a two-run single and Mike McCardell (so. West Chester/Henderson) capped the rally with an RBI double. Matt Maradeo (jr. Nesquehoning/Panther Valley) pitched seven strong innings for KU. He scattered five hits and two walks, while striking out 11. Kevin Morganti (fr. Muhlenberg/Muhlenberg) and Matt Keller (jr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) each pitched a scoreless frame in relief. Craig had three hits, a double and an RBI for Kutztown, which improved to 8-4 with the win. Loper added two hits, a double and three RBI. The Golden Bears also scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Craig stroked an RBI double and Loper had a sacrifice fly.

SAT 3/5-THU 3/10 - at Rebel Spring Games, Orlando, FL
SAT 3/5 - Lewis 9, KU 1 - The Golden Bears fell 9-1 in five innings against Lewis in their first game at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, FL. Kutztown scored its only run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out single by Erin Livingston (sr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Carroll). Lewis, ranked No. 20 in Division II, broke the game open with six runs in the third, and added three more in the fourth. A pair of KU errors led to six unearned runs. Stacey Denlinger (jr. Harleysville/Souderton) took the loss, surrendering all nine runs, but just three were earned.
Northern Kentucky 5, KU 2 - Kutztown dropped its second game of the day, falling 5-2 to Northern Kentucky, the No. 5 team in the country. Adriane Wilmer (so. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) doubled and Lindsay Bennett (fr. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) tripled for KU. Tarin Horonzy (fr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) went 2-for-4 at the plate, and Megan Alexander (so. Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) was 1-for-3 with a run batted in. Dani Spalik (so. Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) also had an RBI.
SUN 3/6 - St. Cloud 12, KU 3 - The Golden Bears led 2-0, before allowing six runs in the top of the fourth, as KU fell to St. Cloud, 12-3, at the Rebel Spring Games. For Kutztown, Wilmer went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two steals. Bennett was 1-for-2 with an RBI. The loss was KU's third straight, against nationally-ranked foes. St. Cloud is ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II.
C.W. Post 3, KU 0 - Kutztown dropped its fourth straight game, falling 3-0 against C.W. Post at the Rebel Spring Games. Stacy Bricker (sr. Kutztown/Kutztown) had two of KU's five hits. Bennett started in the circle and took the loss, going 3.1 innings. She had four strikeouts. Griffith pitched the remainder of the contest in relief, allowing just three hits and striking out three.
