Ryan Loper - Baseball
(so. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley)
Ryan Loper, of the baseball team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Loper struck out 15 batters in a complete-game non-conference victory over Millersville. He fell one out short of a no-hitter, and pitched 4.1 perfect innings. Additionally, Loper was 4-of-9 from the plate for the week, including a two-run home run in the nightcap vs. Millersville.

WED 3/16 - KU 13, Lebanon Valley 5 - Kevin Morganti (fr. Muhlenberg/Muhlenberg) and Justin Jachowicz (fr. Summit Hill/Panther Valley) combined for the pitching victory, while 11 players had a hit as Kutztown defeated Lebanon Valley, 13-5, Wednesday. Morganti started and went five innings, allowing five hits and four runs for his first collegiate victory. Jachowicz went the final four innings with two strikeouts for his first save at KU. Tony Riegel (sr. Exeter/Exeter) led KU with three RBI, while John Shade (so. Reading/Muhlenberg), Kyle Costello (jr. Plains/Coughlin) and Scott Senna (sr. North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) each drove in a pair of runs. Kutztown broke it open in the first with six runs. Costello started the damage, drawing a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. Senna then drove in a pair of runs with a single.
THU 3/17- KU 7, MILLERSVILLE 2 - Ryan Loper (so. Cumberland Valley/Boiling Springs) fell one out short of a no-hitter, striking out 15 in a 7-2 win over Millersville in the 2005 home opener at North Campus Field. The game is a non-conference matchup for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division rivals. Loper baffled the Marauder hitters for most of the game, retiring the first 13 batters - including the last six by strikeouts, before allowing a walk in the fifth inning. An error in the sixth accounted for the only other base runner, until Loper hit an MU batter with two outs and two strikes in the seventh. The next batter blooped a single inside the right field line for MU's first hit of the game, and MU added two more hits and two runs before Loper got his 15th strikeout to end the game. KU was led by Clay Kuklick (sr. North Wales/North Penn), who was 1-for-4 with three RBI. Jeffrey Craig (so. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) was 2-for-4 and Riegel was 2-for-3. KU scored four runs, all unearned thanks to two MU errors, in the second inning. A two-run single by Kuklick powered the rally. Craig doubled and scored on a sacrifice in the fifth, and the Bears added two more unearned runs in the sixth, scoring once on an error and on a groundout by Kuklick.
KU 8, MILLERSVILLE 6 - Kutztown broke a 5-5 tie with a three-run sixth to pick up the doubleheader sweep over Millersville with an 8-6 victory. Senna and Kuklick walked to lead off the inning. Gary Stricker (jr. Croydon/Conwell Egan-Catholic) followed with an RBI single to plate Senna with the game-winning run. Josh Fink (jr. Hatfield/North Penn) followed with a sac fly to score Kuklick and Sticker scored on a squeeze play by Craig. KU trailed 3-1 in the fourth, when Loper stroked a two-run homer to knot the game at 3-3. Phil Rummel (fr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) started on the hill for Kutztown and lasted five innings. He surrendered four runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks. Rummel fanned six. Matt Keller (jr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) relieved him and picked up the win, throwing the final two innings. Costello and Jon Moyer (so. Oley/Oley Valley) each went 2-for-3.
SAT 3/19 - WILMINGTON (DE) 8, KU 3 - Wilmington scored seven runs in the sixth inning to break open a 1-1 game and defeat KU, 8-3, in non-conference action. Matt Maradeo (jr. Nesquehoning/Panther Valley) took the loss, striking out five over 5.1 innings. Loper and Fink were 2-for-3 for KU, while Costello was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Stricker scored two runs.
KU 3, WILMINGTON (DE) 2 - Kyle Sadlowski (jr. Reading/Central Catholic) notched a complete-game victory as KU salvaged a split with a 3-2 win in the night cap. Sadlowski had six strikeouts and allowed just two hits. KU was led by Moyer, who was 2-for-2 with a run, and Shade, who was 2-for-3 with a run. Loper was 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Mike McCardell (so. West Chester/Henderson) and Stricker drove in runs. Moyer singled and scored on a groundout by McCardell in the first. After the Wildcats tied it in the second, KU scored twice in its half of the second to take the lead for good. Loper scored on a squeeze bunt by Stricker, then Shade scored on a wild pitch. WC pulled back within one in the fourth, but Sadlowski clamped down, retiring 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.

WED 3/16 - KU 11, Goldey-Beacom 0 - Stacy Bricker (sr. Kutztown/Kutztown) was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs, while Adriane Willmer (so. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored as KU defeated Goldey-Beacom, 11-0. Jackie Messina (fr. Allentown/Parkland) was 4-for-4 with three runs, while Erin Livingston (sr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Carroll) was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Stacey Denlinger (jr. Harleysville/Souderton) pitched a complete-game six hitter for her third win of the year. Willmer scored on a double steal attempt in the first, and Messina drove in Willmer with a triple in the third. Bricker's two-run double in the seventh capped the scoring.
KU 4, Goldey-Beacom 3 - Willmer was 2-for-5 with two runs and started a game-winning double play in the eighth inning as KU edged the Lightning 4-3 in game two. Bricker was 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Tarin Horonzy (fr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood), Lindsay Bennett (fr. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) and Sara Cook (jr. Chambersburg/Chambersburg) all had two hits. Bricker scored on an error to start the eighth, then Cook singled in Jennifer Lincoln (fr. Stafford/North Stafford) with what proved to be the game-winner. GBC scored once in the bottom of the eighth, then loaded the bases with one out. Willmer snagged a line drive in center field, then threw out the runner at the plate to end the game. Cheryl Griffith (sr. Bethlehem/Freedom) went the distance in the pitcher's circle, allowing three runs, one earned, with eight strikeouts.
THU 3/17 - KU 7, Wilmington (DE) 1 -Lincoln was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two of the Golden Bears' five doubles, as KU topped Wilmington (DE), 7-1, in the first game of a non-league doubleheader. Rachel Weidensaul (fr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) went the distance inside the circle, tossing seven innings of four-hit ball. She struck out six Wildcats. Wilmer was 3-for-5 in the game and Livingston went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Bennett, Bricker and Dani Spalik (so. Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) had Kutztown's other three doubles in win.
KU 12, Wilmington (DE) 2 - A two-run double by Livingston sparked a five-run first as the Golden Bears drubbed Wilmington, 12-2, in the second game of the doubleheader. Livingston added another double, going 2-for-3 in the contest. Wilmer was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Messina finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of stolen bases and three runs scored. Griffith picked up the win. She hurled all five innings, allowing two runs on just three hits and a pair of walks, while striking out five.
SAT 3/19 - KU 4, UNIV. of SCIENCES 0 -Denlinger (4-1) tossed a two-hit shutout as KU topped the University of Sciences, 7-1. She struck out 10 and walked none, allowing just two hits. Lincoln, who was 2-for-3, knocked a two-run single in the third to score Messina and Bricker. Messina also scored in the first on a groundout by Livingston. KU scored a run in the second, as well. Lincoln led off with a double, Kathy Gregg (fr. Narvon/Garden Spot) pinch ran, and was knocked in by Sam Flowers (fr. Harleysville/Souderton).
KU 10, UNIV. of SCIENCES 1 -Bennett went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the Golden Bears downed USP, 10-1 to pick up a sweep of the non-conference doubleheader. Griffith picked up her team-high fifth win of the season, allowing just five hits and a walk in six innings of work. She struck out four. The Devils scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead that KU quickly erased. In the bottom of the inning, Messina, 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and Bricker executed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Livingston followed with a sac fly and Bennett singled home Bricker to make it 2-1. Kutztown broke the game open in the fourth with three runs. Jeylene Rodriguez (fr. Souderton/Souderton) had a pinch double to score Megan Alexander (so. Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) and scored on a double steal with Messina taking second. In the sixth, an RBI single by Lincoln and a two-run knock by Bennett gave KU the 10-1 win.

FRI 3/18 - KU 8, Philadelphia 1 - Kutztown remained unbeaten, improving to 7-0 with an 8-1 win over Philadelphia. KU took all six singles matches. Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta, INDIA), Mukundan Nandakumar (sr. Chennai, INDIA), Somdeep Appineni (so. Hyderabad, INDIA), and Lukas Beman (so. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) won in straight sets. Ilja Semjonovs (jr. Liepaja, LATVIA) used a 10-6 super tie-breaker to win his match, and Nick Gallagher (fr. King of Prussia/Upper Merion) needed three sets to dispatch his foe. In doubles play, Nandakumar and Sharma won at first doubles, and Appineni and Gallagher took a decision at third doubles.
SAT 3/19 - KU 9, New Jersey Tech 0 - The Golden Bears took all nine matches in a win over NJIT. All six singles matches ended in straight sets, with Nandakumar, Sharma, Semjonovs, Appineni, Beman and Gallagher notching wins. Nandakumar and Sharma teamed for a win at first doubles, Semjonovs and Beman were victorious at second doubles, and the tandem of Appineni/Gallagher took the decision at third doubles.

SAT 3/19 - KU 8, New Jersey Tech 1 - The Golden Bears won their sixth in a row with an 8-1 win over New Jersey Tech. KU took five of the six singles matches. Kerstin Kloeffer (so. Ludwigs Hafen, GERMANY), Amy Withers (fr. Essendon, AUSTRALIA), Priya Pachkawde (so. Nasik, INDIA), Lauren Losoncy (jr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) and Kristen Bodalski (jr. Media/Cardinal O'Hara) all picked up wins. Losoncy dropped just two games in her win at fourth singles and Bodalski captured a 10-8 super tie-breaker for her win. In doubles, the teams of Withers/Pachkawde and Losoncy/Vanessa Walsh (fr. Scranton/Bishop Hannan) each dropped just one game in their wins, while Kloeffer and Jharna Nansi (so. Mumbai, INDIA) completed the doubles sweep.

Men: 3rd/8 (90 points) - The Golden Bears won four events as Kutztown took third at the eight-team Seahawk Invitational, hosted by UNC-Wilmington. KU was on of just two non-Division I schools at the competition. UNC-Wilmington defended its home track with a score of 253, while Buffalo tallied 113 for second place. KU was third, ten points ahead of Campbell. Dave Bartolomucci (sr. Exeter/Exeter) won the 400-meter in 48.45 and anchored the winning 4x400 relay that also included Tony Hegedus (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Billy Boorse (so. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley), and Steve Hixson (fr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh). The foursome ran a time of 3:17.22. Steve Tyson (fr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) heaved the shot put 52-0 3/4 for the win in that event. Tyson added a fourth place finish in the discus with a throw of 137-9. Dan Wilde (so. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) took the win in the steeplechase with a time of 9:43.90. Dan Wilson (so. Horsham/Hatboro-Horsham) took second in the javelin with a mark of 184-11 and was joined by Jim Kelly (so. Ambler/Upper Dublin), who placed fifth at 164-9. Hegedus was third in the 400 hurdles in 54.50. KU took third and sixth in pole vault. Jesse Chew (so. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) cleared 14-9 for third and Mike Provenzano (jr. Carlisle/Carlisle) was sixth at 14-3. Pat Bone (fr. Pipersville/Central Bucks West) was fifth in the steeplechase at 10:12.51. Chris Feighner (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) took fifth in the shot put with his toss of 47-1. Hixson took sixth in the 400, crossing the line in 50.85 and Vonkurt Redley (fr. Elkins Park/Cheltenham) matched him in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.27.
Women: 5th/7 (56.5 points) - Alison Maurer (jr. Lewisberry/Northern York) reached the NCAA provisional mark in the hammer as KU placed fifth at the Seahawk Invitational. Maurer's throw of 168-8 was good for third place, behind a pair of Division I competitors. KU was the only non-Division I women's team at the meet. Buffalo won the team title with a score of 191. UNC-Wilmington was second, followed by Maryland. Campbell was fourth with 63, just 6.5 points ahead of the Golden Bears. With 56.5 points, KU just nosed out East Carolina, who had 55 points. Kutztown had fourth place finishes in seven events. In the 400-meter hurdles, Janelle Kostishion (sr. Hilltown/Pennridge) was fourth in 1:04.84, while Laura Kline (jr. Reading/Reading) was sixth in 1:05.02. Amy Schaeffer (jr. Richland/ELCO) hopped, skipped and jumped 34-4 3/4 for fourth place in the triple jump. Desiree Bower (so. Bethel/Tulpehocken) clocked an 11:48.46 in the steeplechase for fourth place in that event. The discus competition saw Kaleena Lockard (sr. Berwick/Berwick) finish fourth with a mark of 124-8 and Jenelle Stoner (jr. Denver/Cocalico) take sixth at 122-11. Candice Bullard (sr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) cleared 5-3 to tie for fourth in the high jump. The 4x100 relay of Renee Marchand (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack), Laura Deller (fr. York/Dallastown), Jaci Pfeiffer (jr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and Kline was fourth in 49.32 and the 4x400 of Kostishion, Kline, Marchand and Pfieffer captured fourth in 4:03.90. Danielle Mousley (sr. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) was sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:23.85.
