Mike McCardell - Baseball
(jr. West Chester/Henderson)
Mike McCardell, of the baseball team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. He was 1-0 with two saves, a 3.00 ERA (3 ER) and 13 strikeouts over 9.0 innings and three appearances last week. He had a complete-game win over East Stroudsburg, and had saves vs. Adelphi and East Stroudsburg. The saves were McCardell's 7th and 8th this season, tying Kutztown's single-season record. He also batted .538 at the plate (7-for-13) with three runs, two doubles and five RBI.

WED 3/29 - KUTZTOWN 9, WILMINGTON 3 - Ryan Loper (jr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to break the game open as Kutztown defeated Wilmington, 9-3. Phillip Rummel (so. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) started the game for KU and picked up his first win of the season. Loper was 2-for-4 with a home run, triple and four RBI. Gary Stricker (sr. Croydon/Conwell Egan-Catholic) was 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Nate Kranz (fr. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) was 3-for-4 with a double, one run scored and an RBI.
THU 3/30 - Kutztown 7, Adelphi 5 - Kranz was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead Kutztown to a 7-5 win over Adelphi. Kranz' RBI single in the seventh drove in Bryan Riggins (so. Glenmoore/Downingtown West), 2-for-2, to knot the score at 5-5. Loper, 2-for-5, belted an RBI single in the eighth to drive in Stricker for the go-ahead run. Kevin Morganti (so. Reading/Muhlenberg) tossed three scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win. Mike McCardell (jr. West Chester/Henderson), who was 2-for-5 at the plate, pitched a perfect ninth inning for his seventh save.
FRI 3/31 - Kutztown 5, East Stroudsburg 2 - The Golden Bears scored five runs in the fourth to win 5-2 over East Stroudsburg. Matt Maradeo (sr. Nesquehoning/Panther Valley) struck out 13 en route to his fourth win on the season. McCardell struck out the side in the seventh for his KU record tying eighth save on the season.
Kutztown 13, East Stroudsburg 2 - Kutztown scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to break the game wide open, defeating East Stroudsburg, 13-2. Jeff Craig (jr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) and McCardell hit back-to-back doubles in the first inning to put KU on the board. A Craig single in the fifth inning started the 10-run rally. Josh Fink (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three runs scored. McCardell was 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI and three runs. Craig was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. Bill Loskiewictz (sr. Philadelphia/Nuemann-Garretti) pitched five innings, striking out seven, for his third win of the season.
SAT 4/1 - KUTZTOWN 14, EAST STROUDSBURG 0 - Kutztown scored six runs in the second inning, defeating East Stroudsburg, 14-0. Stricker and Craig had two-run singles, McCardell had a sac fly and Dan Gavlick (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) had an RBI single to account for KU's six-run second. Craig belted a two-run homer in the fifth. Craig was 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI. Stricker was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Kyle Kaschak (sr. New Providence/Solanco) was 2-for-2, while Fink scored two runs. Loper pitched five scoreless innings with five strikeouts for the win (4-1).
KUTZTOWN 5, EAST STROUDSBURG 3 - The Golden Bears fell behind early, but bounced back to complete the four-game sweep of the Warriors. KU cut it to 3-2 with a two-run homer by Stricker. In the fourth, Kyle Costello (sr. Plains/Coughlin) tied the score with a single and later scored when Matt Dierolf (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) drew a bases-loaded walk. Costello's single in the fourth gave KU a 5-3 cushion. McCardell (2-0) went the distance on the mound, striking out nine and allowing seven hits. KU stretched its school-record winning streak to 14 games, and secured its 13th-straight 20-win season.

MON 3/27-TUE 3/28 - at Bellarmine Invitational - Holly Shubilla (jr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) led Kutztown, tying for 25th at the Bellarmine Invitational. Shubilla shot a 91-91-182 on the par 72, 5,805 yard course. The Golden Bears finished in ninth (750). Southern Indiana placed first (668) and Northern Kentucky and SIU-Edwardsville tied for second (675). Bethany Adams (fr. Allentown/Parkland) tied for 28th, 94-89-183. Angela Petak (so. Brockway/Brockway) finished 98-90-188, Tristin Suzenski (jr. Pottstown/St. Pius X) went 95-102-197 and Lauren Foulke (fr. Kempton/Kutztown) finished 100-102-202.
SAT 4/1-SUN 4/2 - at McDaniel Invitational - Kutztown finished first, shooting 713 on the par 72, 5,825 yard course, at the McDaniel Invitational. Petak finished second overall, shooting 80-91-171. Shubilla placed fifth (88-88-176). Suzenski tied in 10th place (98-86-184), Foulke tied for 13th (100-88-188) and Adams finished 15th (94-97-191).

FRI 3/31 - KUTZTOWN 6, EAST STROUDSBURG 1 - Krista Cameron (fr. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) belted a three-run home run to lead Kutztown to a 6-1 win over East Stroudsburg. KU took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a sac fly by Lindsay Bennett (so. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun), and Ashley Fitzgerald (fr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) scoring on an error. Cameron's three-run blast in the fifth made it 5-0. Adriane Willmer (jr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) drove in Jackie Messina (so. Allentown/Parkland) on a double in the sixth for a 6-0 lead. Stacey Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) went the distance in the pitcher's circle, striking out six for her fifth win of the year. Stephanie Denlinger (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) was 2-for-2 at the plate.
KUTZTOWN 8, EAST STROUDSBURG 0 (5 inn) - Kutztown scored three runs in the third and fourth to win 8-0 over ESU. Willmer started the bottom of the fifth with a triple. Cameron hit a sacrifice fly to right field to send Willmer home for the win. Sam Flowers (so. Harleysville/Souderton) hit a two-run single in the third to put KU up, 4-0. Fitzgerald knocked in two on a double in the fourth. Rachel Weidensaul (so. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) went five innings with three strike-outs for her team leading 11th win on the season. Dani Spalik (jr. Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) hit a homer in the second to put KU on the board. Kim Morrison (fr. Newmarket, ONT/Sir William Mulock) was 3-for-4 with three singles and two runs scored. Willmer went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two runs scored.
Bloomsburg 4, Kutztown 3 - Bloomsburg hit a two-run single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Bloomsburg to a 4-3 win over Kutztown. KU took a 1-0 lead on Stephanie Denlinger's RBI double in the first, then went up 3-2 on a two-run homer by Bennett in the fourth. Stacey Denlinger pitched six strong innings, allowing nine hits and striking out three, before running into trouble in the seventh. Weidensaul relieved Denlinger and got one out before Bloomsburg connected on the game winning single.
Bloomsburg 6, Kutztown 4 (8 inn) - Bloomsburg hit a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat KU 6-4. KU took a 3-0 lead in the first on a two-run single by Fitzgerald, who later scored on a passed ball. KU added another run in the second when Spalik scored on an error.

TUE 3/28 - KUTZTOWN 5, TEMPLE 2 - Kutztown defeated Division I Temple, 5-2, in men's tennis action. Kutztown won two of the three doubles matches, and took three of the four completed singles matches for the victory. Radoslaw Hlubinski (sr. Warsaw, POLAND) and Santiago Baquerizo (fr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) won at first doubles. Somdeep Appineni (jr. Hyderabad, INDIA) and Rubens Vianna (so. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) won at third doubles. Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta, INDIA), Lukas Labitsch (fr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) and Vianna won in straight sets at third (6-2, 6-4), fourth (7-5, 6-0) and sixth (6-3, 6-4) singles, respectively. The second and fifth matches did not finished due to darkness.
FRI 3/31 - KUTZTOWN 7, MERCY 2 - Down 2-1 after the doubles, KU battled back, sweeping the singles matches 6-0. Sharma and Labitsch won first doubles, 8-2. In singles, Baquerizo won first, 7-5, 6-3. Sharma won at second, 6-3, 6-1. Hlubinski won third, 6-4, 6-3, Labitsch won fourth, 6-1, 6-2. Appineni split the first two sets at fifth 6-3 and 3-6 can came back to win the tie break, 11-9. Vianna completed the singles sweep at sixth, 6-1, 6-3.
SAT 4/1 - KUTZTOWN 8, ADELPHI 1 - The Golden Bears swept all three doubles matches and took five-of-six in singles play on their way to an 8-1 victory over Adelphi. Baquerizo and Hlubinski swept all eight games of the first doubles match. Sharma and Vianna took the second doubles (8-1) and Appineni and Lukas Beman (jr. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) finished the sweep at third doubles with an 8-6 win. Baquerizo won at first (6-2, 6-2), Sharma won third (6-2, 6-2), Appineni won fourth (6-2, 8-5), Sendhur Gautham (fr. Chennai, INDIA/Central York {PA}) won fifth (6-2, 6-1) and Beman won sixth (6-1, 6-2) to secure the team victory for the Golden Bears.

SAT 4/1 - KUTZTOWN 7, ADELPHI 2 - The Golden Bears swept all three doubles matches and took four-of-six in singles play on their way to a 7-2 victory over Adelphi. Kerstin Kloeffer (sr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) and Priya Pachkawde (jr. Nasik, INDIA) picked up a win (8-1) in the first doubles match. Magaly Peter (fr. Mundolsheim, FRANCE) and Jharna Nansi (jr. Mumbai, INDIA) swept eight games in the second doubles. Lauren Losoncy (sr. Shillington/Govenor Mifflen) and Kristen Bodalski (sr. Media/Cardinal O'Hara) followed suit, taking all eight games in the third doubles match. Peter won 6-0, 6-0 at second. Pachkawde won third, 6-1, 6-1, Losoncy won fourth, 6-2, 6-2 and Bodalski won 6-0, 6-3 at fifth to secure the team victory for the Golden Bears.

SAT 4/1 - at Muhlenberg Invitational - The Golden Bears had 16 first place finished at the Muhlenberg Invitational. Alison Maurer (sr. Lewisberry/Northern York) took first in the discus (124-3) and the hammer (169-8). Renee Marchand (jr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) took home first in the long jump (16-10 ¼). Laura Deller (so. York/Dallastown) finished second (16-4 ½) and Alex Butler (fr. Montoursville/Montoursville) placed third (16-3 ½). Michelle Hughes (so. Warminster/William Tennent) placed second in the shot put (38-5 ½) and Amy Schaeffer (sr. Richland/ELCO) took fifth in the triple jump (32-7). The team of Katie Quinn (fr. Glenolden/Interboro), Laura Kline (sr. Reading/Reading), Jewel Daye (fr. Philadelphia/Central High) and Doofan Tor-Agbidye (fr. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) finished first in the 4x100 in 49.43. The 4x400 team of Tor-Agbidye, Jessica Donovan (fr. Newtown/Pennsbury), Marchand and Kline placed first in 4:01.36 and the 4x800 team of Desiree Bower (jr. Bethel/Tulpehocken), Chelsea Thomas (jr. Sellersville/Pennridge), Cheryl Dingman (fr. Lansdale/North Penn) and Hailey Dell (fr. Saranac Lake, NY/Saranac Lake) completed the first place relays in 10:10.39. Tor-Agbidye finished first in the 100 (12.93) and Daye placed third (13.17). Daye also finished fourth in the 200 (27.09). Dingman placed third in the 800 (2:21.74) and Bower finished third in the 1500 (4:56.76). Stephanie Williams (so. Harrisburg/Riverside) finished first in the 5000 (19:27.10). Kline was first in the 400 hurdles (1:03.38) and Donovan was sixth (1:09.85).
For the men, Justin Gibbs (so. Pottstown/Pottstown) (15.77) and Vonkurt Redley (so. Elkins Park/Cheltenham) (16.40) took 1-2 in the 100 hurdles. Tony Hegedus (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) placed first in the 400 hurdles (53.91). The 4x100 relay team of Mike Turner (fr. Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg), Kendel Dixon (fr. Atglen/Octorara), Steve Hixson (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) and Gibbs placed first in 42.53. The 4x400 relay team of Hixson, Dixon, Ryan Jagielski (fr. Howell, NJ/Coltsneck), and Hegedus finished first in 3:19.72. The Golden Bears took 1-4 in the 200. Matt Carroll (sr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) was first (22.53), Turner finished second (22.88), Dixon placed third (22.98) and Hixson was fourth (23.14). Carroll also placed second in the 400 (49.47) and Jagielski finished third (50.07). Dave Tidey (sr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) placed fifth in the 800 (1:58.47), Pat McKeever (so. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) finished sixth in the 1500 (4:05.01) and Pat Bone (so. Pipersville/Central Bucks West) was fourth in the 5000 (15:41.81). Turner came in first in the long jump (23-4) and Ian Clark (so. Troy, NH/Monadnock Regional) placed fifth (21-3 ½). Steve Tyson (so. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) placed first in the shot put (50-11 ½), fourth in the discus (142-7) and fourth in the hammer (129-4). Benn Trasatt (so.
