Mike McCardell - Baseball
(jr. West Chester/Henderson) 

         Mike McCardell, of the baseball team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  McCaredell picked up four saves in ten innings pitched.  H was 10-for-20, scoring six runs, eight RBI and hitting three home runs.

       MON 3/13-SAT 3/18 - at Savannah (GA) Invitational

       MON 3/13 - Missouri Western State 9, Kutztown 7 - Kutztown let a 7-1 lead slip away, falling to Missouri Western State, 9-7.  Jeff Craig (jr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) had a two-run homer in the sixth as KU stretched its lead to 7-1.  Chad Lightcap (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Craig was 2-for-5 with two runs batted in.  Mike McCardell (jr. West Chester/Henderson) was 2-for-3.  Bill Loskiewictz (sr. Philadelphia/Nuemann-Garretti) struck out five over the first 6.1 innings.

TUE 3/14 - Kutztown 10, Missouri Western State 9 - Kutztown won, 10-9, over Missouri Western State.  Lightcap, Craig and McCardell hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning to give KU the lead for good.  Craig hit a second homer in the eighth inning for a 10-8 KU lead.  McCardell came on in relief and struck out the final batter to get the save.  Kevin Morganti (so. Reading/Muhlenberg) pitched four innings with three strikeouts for the win.  McCardell was 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and a double.  Craig was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

WED 3/15 - Kutztown 7, Fairmont State 3 - KU scored six runs in the ninth inning to come from behind and defeat Fairmont State, 7-3.  McCardell started the ninth inning with a single.  Lightcap singled while Craig walked to load the bases.  Gary Stricker (sr. Croydon/Conwell Egan-Catholic) was hit by a pitch to send McCardell home and make the score 3-2.  Dan Gavlick (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) hit an RBI single to tie the game.  Craig scored on a Fairmont State throwing error for the go ahead run.  Kyle Costello (sr. Plains/Coughlin) hit a two-run single to give KU a three run lead.  Ryan Loper (jr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) pitched eight innings, striking out nine batters for the win.  Gavlick went 3-for-5, scored two runs, had an RBI and a double.

THU 3/16 - Kutztown 8, Armstrong Atlantic 5 - Kutztown knocked off Armstrong Atlantic, 8-5.  Craig gave KU the lead for good, with a pinch-hit, RBI single in the fifth.  He added a two-run homer in the eighth for some insurance.  McCardell came on in relief and got a fly out and then struck out the final batter to pick up the save.  Chris David (fr. Fairless Hills/Conwell Egan-Catholic) was the winning pitcher.  Lightcap was 2-for-3 with two runs, while Craig was 2-for-2 with three RBI.  Loper was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

FRI 3/17 - Kutztown 8, California, PA 5 - Kutztown beat California, PA, 8-5.  Matt Maradeo (sr. Nesquehoning/Panther Valley) pitched eight innings, striking out six, for the win.  McCardell came on in the ninth to get the save.  McCardell hit a two-run home run in the fifth to give the Golden Bears a 5-2 lead.  Josh Fink (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) hit a two-run double in the eighth for some extra cushion.  Fink was 2-for-5, with two RBIs and scored two runs.  Loper went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a sacrifice. 

SAT 3/18 - Kutztown 14, California, PA 11 - Kutztown beat California, PA, 14-11.  McCardell hit a two-run home run in the fifth to tie the game.  Loskiewictz started the game and went four innings, giving up seven runs and striking out three.  Morganti pitched a third of an inning for the win.  McCardell pitched the ninth for the save.  Lightcap went 2-for-2, hitting a double, scoring a run and three RBI.  Craig was 2-for-5 with four RBI and a home run.  McCardell was 2-for-5 with a double and home run.  Loper was 3-for-5 with a double and a stolen base.

TUE 3/14- THU 3/16 - at Savannah (GA) Invitational

TUE 3/14 - Kutztown 6, West Liberty State 3 - Kutztown defeated West Liberty State, 6-3.  KU broke open a 3-3 tie with a pair of solo home runs in the fifth inning by Stephanie Denlinger (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) and Lindsay Bennett (so. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun).  Denlinger was 2-for-3 in the game.  Older sister Stacey Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) got the win in the pitcher's circle, going all seven innings, allowing three unearned runs and striking out five.

Kutztown 4, Limestone 0 - Rachel Weidensaul (so. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Kutztown to a 4-0 win over Limestone.  Weidensaul struck out two batters in the shutout win.  Adriane Willmer (jr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection), who was 2-for 3, scored on an error and Ashley Fitzgerald (fr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) belted a two-run double.

WED 3/15 - Armstrong Atlantic 11, Kutztown 0 (5 inn.) - Kutztown lost to Armstrong Atlantic, 11-0.  Willmer, Kim Morrison (fr. Newmarket, ONT/Sir William Mulock), Bennett and Dani Spalik (jr. Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) were each 1-for-2 in the game.  Kutztown 1, Armstrong Atlantic 0 - Weidensaul pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Kutztown to a 1-0 win over Armstrong Atlantic.  Weidensaul struck out four batters.  Morrison went 2-for-3 and scored the only run of the contest in the top of the first off an error when Krista Cameron (fr. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) hit a double.

THU 3/16 - Kutztown 8, Limestone 4 - Kutztown hit three home runs en route to an 8-4 win over Limestone.  In the third inning, Stephanie Denlinger and Ashley Fitzgerald hit back-to-back homeruns.  Bennett hit a homer in the fifth to make the score 8-2.  Stephanie Denlinger went 2-for-4 with a home run, as did Bennett.  Stacey Denlinger was with winning pitcher, going seven innings and striking out five.

Kutztown 1, West Liberty State 0 (8 inn.) - Weidensaul pitched a shut out as Kutztown defeated Western Liberty State, 1-0.  Weidensaul struck out seven batters. Stephanie Denlinger hit a single in the top of the eighth, moving Morrison to third.  Fitzgerald then hit an RBI single for the only run of the game. Caitlin Hague (so. Lansdale/North Penn) was 2-for-3 and Jennie Lincoln (so. Stafford, VA/North Stafford) as 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter.

SAT 3/18 - Francis Marion 4, Kutztown 3 - Kutztown tied the game in the sixth, but could not hold on, losing to Francis Marion, 4-3.  Cameron hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to tie the game at three.  Stacey Denlinger pitched six innings, giving up three runs and striking out five.  Weidensaul came on the sixth, giving up the game winning run.  Morrison hit a solo home run in the first inning to put KU on the board.

Francis Marion 12, Kutztown 4 (6 inn.) - The Golden Bears scored two runs in the first inning, but could not hang on and lost to Francis Marion, 12-4.  Lincoln and Stephanie Denlinger hit back-to-back doubles in the fifth for the Golden Bears' two runs.  Stephanie Denlinger went 2-for-3, with two doubles.  Lincoln was 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter with a double.

WED 3/15 - Southern Illinois 4, Kutztown 3 - The Golden Bears suffered their first lost, 4-3, to Southern Illinois.  KU won the doubles point, sweeping the three matches.  At first, Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta, INDIA) and Lukas Labitsch (fr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) won, 8-6.  Somdeep Appineni (jr. Hyderabad, INDIA) and Rubens Vianna (so. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) won at second, 8-6 and Radoslaw Hlubinski (sr. Warsaw, POLAND) and Santiago Baquerizo (fr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) won in third, 8-0.  Baquerizo won at first singles, 7-6, 6-0 and Sharma won second, 6-4, 6-3.

THU 3/16 - Kutztown 7, Limestone 2 - Kutztown defeated Limestone, 7-2.  Sharma and Labitsch won at first doubles, 8-3.  Hlubinski and Baquerizo won at second 8-2.  Baquerizo started the single matches with a win, 7-5, 7-6.  Sharma followed, winning 6-1, 6-1, at second.  Hlubinski won third, 6-4, 6-3.  Labitsch won fourth, 6-4, 6-4 and Vienna won fifth, 6-4, 7-5.

MON 3/13 - Kutztown 6, Wayne State (MI) 3 - Kutztown defeated Wayne State, 6-3.  Kerstin Kloeffer (sr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) and Priya Pachkawde (jr. Nasik, INDIA) won first doubles, 8-5.  Magaly Peter (fr. Mundolsheim, FRANCE) and Jharna Nansi (jr. Mumbai, INDIA) won second doubles, 8-7.  Kloeffer won 6-4, 6-3 in first singles followed by Peter winning in second, 6-3, 6-2.  Nansi won at fourth after her opponent was injured, 5-7, 5-5.  Lauren Losoncy (sr. Shillington/Govenor Mifflen) won sixth, 6-1, 6-3.

WED 3/15 - Denison 6, Kutztown 3 - Kutztown suffered its first loss 6-3, to Denison.  KU won second doubles with Nansi and Peter winning, 8-6.  Peter then won second singles, 5-7, 7-6 (12-10) while Pachkawde followed winning third, 7-5, 3-6 (10-7).

THU 3/16 - Kutztown 7, Limestone 2 - The Golden Bears beat Limestone, 7-2.  Kloeffer and Pachkawde won first doubles, 8-6.  Nansi and Peter won second doubles, 8-6.  Kloeffer began the single matches with a 4-6, 7-5 (10-8) win.  Peter followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at second.  Pachkawde won at third, 6-3, 6-3.  Nansi won fourth, 6-4, 6-4 and Losoncy won fifth, 6-1, 7-5.

FRI 3/17-SAT 3/18 - at Shamrock Invitational (Conway, SC)

Kutztown outdoor track and field started its season at the Shamrock Invitational at Coastal Carolina.  In the men's events, Tony Hegedus (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) placed second in the 400 meter hurdles in a NCAA provisional time of 52.81.  Steve Hixson (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Kendel Dixson (fr. Atglen/Octorara), Matt Carroll (sr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) and Hegedus finished second place 4x400 relay in 4:01.52.  Carroll was second in the meter (48.33).  In the 3000 steeplechase, Dan Wilde (jr. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) placed third (9:50.53).  Mike Turner (fr. Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) finished third in the long jump (22-6 ½) and Steve Tyson (so. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) was fourth in the shot put (49-1 ½). For the women, Alison Maurer (sr. Lewisberry/Northern York) placed fourth in the hammer throw with a NCAA provisional throw of 174-9.  Cheryl Dingman (fr. Lansdale/North Penn) placed third in the 1500 (4:49.67).  The 4x400 relay team of Doofan Tor-Agbidye (fr. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg), Renee Marchand (jr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack), Dingman, Laura Kline (sr. Reading/Reading) placed third in 4:01.52.  Kline finished fourth in the 400 hurdles (64.81) and Rebecca Kerchak (fr. Sinking Spring/Wilson) placed fifth in the 100 hurdles (15.98).
