Mike McCardell - Baseball
(jr. West Chester/Henderson)
Mike McCardell, of the baseball team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. McCardell was 2-0 with a 0.00 earned-run average in two appearances for the Golden Bears. McCardell pitched a three-hit shutout as KU defeated Mansfield, 1-0. He then tossed four innings in relief, allowing two hits and one unearned run vs. Millersville. He had 16 strikeouts on the week.

MON 4/24 - Kutztown 10, Albright 2 - Kutztown pounded out 13 hits en route to a 10-2 non-conference win over Albright at First Energy Stadium, home of the Reading Phillies. Dominick Fantanarosa (fr. Coatesville/Coatesville) was 2-for-3, Paul Cashin (jr. Collingdale/Monsignor Bonner) was 2-for-2, and Bryan Riggins (so Glenmoore/Downingtown West) was 2-for-2 with two runs. Matt Jones (so. Lititz/Warwick) drove in two runs on his only at-bat. KU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second. Kyle Costello (sr. Plains/Coughlin) hit his first homer of the season to lead off the third. Chad Lightcap (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) pitched three scoreless innings with five strikeouts in relief for his first collegiate win. Kevin Morganti (so. Reading/Muhlenberg) went the first four frames, allowing five hits and two unearned runs.
TUE 4/25 - Kutztown 4, Mansfield 2 - Gary Stricker (sr. Croydon/Conwell Egan-Catholic) was 3-for-3 with two RBI, including the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, as Kutztown won game one at Mansfield, 4-2. Philip Rummel (so. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) went the distance on the mound. He struck out five and allowed five hits, two runs, one earned, for his fourth win of the year.
Kutztown 1, Mansfield 0 - Kutztown's Mike McCardell (jr. West Chester/Henderson) was masterful on the mound, pitching a three-hit shutout as Kutztown completed the sweep of Mansfield, 1-0. McCardell struck out eight. Kutztown loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter in the fourth inning, scoring the game's only run when John Shade (jr. Reading/Muhlenberg) scored on a wild pitch. KU was limited to two hits - a pair of singles by Josh Fink (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) (2-for-3).
WED 4/26 - KUTZTOWN 12, SHIPPENSBURG 6 - Kutztown fell behind early, but never quit to come from behind and beat Shippensburg, 12-6. Down 5-0 early, Kutztown started to chip away, scoring two runs each of the fourth and fifth innings, before scoring twice more in the sixth to take the lead. Justin Jachowicz (so. Summit Hill/Panther Valley) pitched the final two innings for his second win on the season. Fink went 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored. Nate Kranz (fr. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI and a run scored. McCardell, Ryan Loper (jr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) and Garrison Rausch (so. Allentown/Parkland) each had two hits.
FRI 4/28 - Kutztown 2, Millersville 1 - Matt Maradeo (sr. Nesquehoning/Panther Valley) pitched 7.1 innings, giving up one run to earn his sixth win on the season as Kutztown defeated Millersville, 2-1, in game one. Jeff Craig (jr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) was 2-for-4 with a homer. Cashin and Rausch each hit a double. Derek Reis (so. Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) pitched the final 0.2 innings for his second save on the season.
Millersville 4, Kutztown 0 - Kutztown committed four errors and dropped the second game, 4-0, to Millersville. McCardell was 3-for-4 with a double and Fink was 2-for-4 with a double.
SAT 4/29 - KUTZTOWN 5, MILLERSVILLE 0 - Loper and Rummel combined on a two-hit shutout as Kutztown defeated Millersville, 5-0. KU had just four hits, but made the most of them. Fink scored on an RBI double by Kranz in the first. Stricker belted a two-run home run in the second, and Matt Dierolf (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) laced a two-run single in the third. Fink had KU's only other hit. Loper pitched the first five innings, allowing two hits with three strikeouts. Rummel tossed the final two innings, with two strikeouts.
KUTZTOWN 4, MILLERSVILLE 2 - Kranz's RBI single broke a 2-2 tie and propelled Kutztown to a 4-2 win over Millersville. Cashin lined his first home run of 2006 over the right field fence to give KU a 2-1 lead in the third. Chris David (fr. Fairless Hills/Conwell Egan-Catholic) pitched the first three innings, allowing one hit and one unearned run with three strikeouts. Mike McCardell went the final four innings for his sixth win, allowing two hits and one unearned run with eight strikeouts.

TUE 4/25 - 3rd/10 - at Gettysburg Invitational - Kutztown placed third at the Gettysburg Invitational at the par 72, 5,710 yard Links at Gettysburg. Lehigh placed first with a score of 340. Mt. St. Mary's was second with 357 and Kutztown third with 362. Holly Shubilla (jr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) tied for fourth and led KU, shooting 85. Bethany Adams (fr. Allentown/Parkland) was eighth and shot an 87. Tristin Suzenski (jr. Pottstown/St. Pius X) carded a 13th, shot 90. Angela Petak (so. Brockway/Brockway) carded a 21st, shot 100 and Lauren Foulke (fr. Kempton/Kutztown) carded a 31st, with 107.

MON 4/24 - Shippensburg 2, Kutztown 0 - Shippensburg scored twice in the second inning and held Kutztown off the scoreboard to win, 2-0. KU managed five hits in the contest, including two by Kim Morrison (fr. Newmarket, ONT/Sir William Mulock), who was 2-for-3. Stephanie Denlinger (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) pitched four scoreless innings in relief. She had three strikeouts.
Shippensburg 4, Kutztown 1 - Shippensburg struck for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase a 1-0 KU lead and complete the sweep of the Golden Bears. KU went up in the second inning when Krista Cameron (fr. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) singled and scored on Jenny Lincoln's (so. Stafford, VA/North Stafford) double. Cameron was 2-for-3.
TUE 4/25 - Kutztown 7, West Chester 1 - Lindsay Bennett (so. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) was 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead Kutztown to a 7-1 win over West Chester in game one. Ashley Fitzgerald (fr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI hits and Adriane Willmer (jr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. KU broke it open with four runs in the seventh, including a sac fly by Stephanie Denlinger, an RBI single by Fitzgerald and a two-run single by Bennett. Rachel Weidensaul (so. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) pitched five scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and striking out four, for her 15th win. Stephanie Denlinger was 2-for-3.
Kutztown 13, West Chester 0 (6 inn) - Kutztown rolled over West Chester, 13-0 in six innings, to complete the doubleheader sweep. Cameron was 4-for-4 with two runs scored, Morrison and Willmer were 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Fitzgerald had a grand slam and Stephanie Denlinger had a three-run home run to round out KU's hitting leaders. KU batted around in the sixth, including a grand slam by Fitzgerald and a solo shot by Bennett. Weidensaul was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits and striking out four in the shutout for her 16th win.
FRI 4/28 - Kutztown 7, Millersville 6 - Coach Judy Lawes picked up her 500th win as head coach as Kutztown defeated Millersville, 7-6, in game. Millersville struck first with three runs in the first inning. Kutztown answered with five runs in the second. All of the scoring happened in the first three innings. Stacey Denlinger started the game for Kutztown, pitching 2.0 innings. Weidensaul pitched the remaining five innings for her 17th win of the season.
Millersville 5, Kutztown 4 - Millersville hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom off the seventh to split the double header, 5-4. Kathy Gregg (so. Narvon/Garden Spot) went 3-for-3. Fitzgerald was 2-for-2 with a homerun. Bennett also hit a homer for KU.
SAT 4/29 - KUTZTOWN 5, MANSFIELD 4 - Kutztown jumped to a 5-0 lead in the second inning and defeated Mansfield, 8-4, in game one. Stacey Denlinger pitched a complete game for her 10th win. Stephanie Denlinger and Fitzgerald each hit a homerun. Stephanie Denlinger was 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Fitzgerald was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Morrison went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Cameron was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
KUTZTOWN 10, MANSFIELD 2 (6 inn) - Kutztown completed the sweep of the double header with a 10-2 win in the second game. Kutztown exploded in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs. Down 2-1 in the fifth, Morrison hit a single, Stephanie Denlinger walked and Fitzgerald hit a single. Mansfield's pitcher threw away the ball, allowing Morrison to score and tie the game. Bennett reached on an error by the left fielder, allowing Denlinger to score and give KU the 3-2 lead. Morrison, Denlinger, Fitzgerald, Cameron and Caitlin Hague (so. Lansdale/North Penn) each had two hits in the game. Morrison added three RBI.

Last Week's Action
FRI 4/28 - at PSAC Individual Championships at bloomsburg - Santiago Baquerizo (fr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) and the team of Somdeep Appineni (jr. Hyderabad, INDIA) and Rubens Vianna (so. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) claimed the PSAC Individual Championships. Baquerizo and teammates Vianna and Radoslaw Hlubinski (sr. Warsaw, POLAND) made up three of the four singles semifinalists. Baquerizo cruised through straight set victories in the first round and quarterfinals, before facing Vianna in the singles semifinal. Baquerizo won 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the finals. Hlubinski also won in the semifinals, defeating Bloomsburg's Dan Gal, 2-6, 6-2, (10-0 super tie-breaker). Baquerizo then downed Hlubinski, 6-0, 6-3, to claim the singles crown. In the doubles bracket, Appineni and Vianna recorded an 8-2 win over Jon Crossley and Adam Shosky of Slippery Rock in the first round. In the semifinals, KU's team upset the top seeded tandem of Cliff Boyd and Greg Bennett of Millersville, 8-4. Appineni/Vianna then made short work of East Stroudsburg's Patrick Luchowski and Jeff Kurz, 8-2, to win the doubles title.

Last Week's Action
FRI 4/28 - at PSAC Individual Championships - at Bloomsburg - Magaly Peter (fr. Mundolsheim, FRANCE) and Jharna Nansi (jr. Mumbai, INDIA) combined to win the PSAC doubles title. KU's team escaped with a 9-8 win over Lina Pavilionyte and Melinda Meisel of Shippensburg in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals Nansi/Peter blanked Kayla Blackburn and Lara Rizzi of Slippery Rock, 8-0. In the final match, the Golden Bears defeated Bloomsburg's Lauren Colfer and Tracy Nissenbaum, 8-3, to secure the title. In singles action, KU's Kerstin Kloeffer (sr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) fell one match short of completing the Golden Bear sweep. After a first-round bye, Kloeffer recorded straight-set wins in the second round, quarterfinals and semifinals, advancing to the finals vs. Inga Chilingaryan of California (PA). Chilingaryan, the top ranked singles player in the region, defeated Kloeffer, the #2 player in the region, 6-0, 6-0. KU's other singles entries, Priya Pachkawde (jr. Nasik, INDIA) and Lauren Losoncy (sr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin), were both 1-1 in the tournament, falling in the second round.

THU 4/27-SAT 4/29 - at Penn Relays - Kutztown sent runners to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. Laura Kline (sr. Reading/Reading) ran 1:02.24 in the 400 hurdles. Alison Maurer (sr. Lewisberry/Northern York) placed ninth in the hammer throw with a throw of 174-6. The women's 4x400 relay team of Jewel Daye (fr. Philadelphia/Central High), Doofan Tor-Agbidye (fr. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg), Renee Marchand (jr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) and Kline placed first in their heat with a time of 3:53.91. The men's 4x400 relay team, of Steve Hixson (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Kendel Dixon (fr. Atglen/Octorara), Matt Carroll (sr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) and Tony Hegedus (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) also placed first in their heat with a time of 3:15.58. The team of Dave Tidey (sr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), Ryan Jagielski (fr. Howell, NJ/Coltsneck), Pat MeKeever (so. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) and Billy Boorse (jr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) ran the 4x800 in a time of 7:48.61. Steve Winters (sr. Harrisburg/Cedar Cliff) placed second in his flight of the pole vault with a height of 15-7 and Mike Provanzano (sr. Carlisle/Carlisle) tied for 10th with a vault of 14-9.
SAT 4/29 - at Lehigh Invitational at Lehigh games - Kutztown compete in the Lehigh games. Mike Turner (fr. Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) placed first in three events; 100m (10.70), 200 (21.87) and the long jump (22-11 ¾). Dan Wilde (jr. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) finished first in the 3000 steeplechase in 9:51.15. Jordan Frank (so. Pottsville/Blue Mountain) came in third in the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.48. Cody Hartzler (fr. Belleville/Indian Valley) placed second in the high jump (6-5) and third in the triple jump (40-2). Winters placed first in the pole vault (15-3), Chris Boutsikaris (fr. Newton, NJ/Newton) was first in the javelin (172-0) and Steve Tyson (so. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) was third in the hammer throw (144-10). Maurer placed first in the hammer throw with a NCAA provisional throw of 177-3. Christine Procopio (sr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) finished second with a NCAA provisional throw of 171-1. Lindsay Runkle (fr. Pottsville/Pottsville) finished third in the pole vault (10-10) and Laura Deller (so. York/Dallastown) came in third in the long jump (17-2 ¾). Jessica Donovan (fr.
