Athlete of the Week 

Mike McCardell - Baseball
(jr. West Chester/Henderson) 

       Mike McCardell, of the baseball team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  McCardell led Kutztown to the PSAC Championship, hitting .529 (9-of-17) with six runs, five doubles and three RBI.  He also saved three of KU's four wins in the tournament.

       THU 5/4-SAT 5/6  - at PSAC Championships, Boalsburg, PA                             

       THU 5/4 - Kutztown 2, Shippensburg 1 - Matt Maradeo (sr. Nesquehoning/Panther Valley) pitched eight strong innings and Kyle Costello (sr. Plains/Coughlin) drove in two runs on a single in the fifth inning as Kutztown defeated Shippensburg, 2-1.  Maradeo struck out eight, allowing four hits and one run over eight innings, to pick up his seventh win of the year.  Mike McCardell (jr. West Chester/Henderson) struck out the side in the ninth for his 10th save of the year. 

THU 5/4 - Kutztown 10, Slippery Rock 3 - Kutztown advanced to the winners-bracket final of the PSAC Baseball Championship, with a 10-3 win over Slippery Rock.  Jeff Craig (jr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) was 3-for-5 with three RBI, Ryan Loper (jr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, Gary Stricker (sr. Croydon/Conwell Egan-Catholic) was 2-for-3 and Josh Fink (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) was 2-for-3.   William Loskiewictz (sr. Philadelphia/Nuemann-Garretti) pitched 7.1 innings, scattering four hits and allowing one run.  He struck out seven and walked three.  

FRI 5/6 - Kutztown 5, Slippery Rock 4 - Nate Kranz (fr. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) hit a pair of two-run doubles, including the go-ahead hit in the seventh inning, and McCardell was 4-for-4 and earned a save to lift Kutztown to a 5-4 win over Slippery Rock.  McCardell had two doubles and scored three runs on his four hits.  He also pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 11th save of the year.  Kranz was 2-for-4 with four RBI.  Fink was 2-for-5 and Paul Cashin (jr. Collingdale/Monsignor Bonner) was 2-for-3.  Derick Reis (so. Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) pitched a scoreless eighth to set up McCardell in the ninth.  Loper started, going the first 6.2 with four strikeouts.  Chris David (fr. Fairless Hills/Conwell Egan-Catholic) got the final out of the seventh and was the winning pitcher. 

SAT 5/7 - Kutztown 8, West Chester 5 -McCardell was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and picked up his third save of the tournament as Kutztown defeated West Chester, 8-5, to claim its second-straight PSAC Baseball Championship.  Kutztown had to come from behind to defeat the Golden Rams, taking a 6-5 lead on a two-run homer by Cashin in the bottom of the seventh.  KU added two more runs in the inning on a squeeze bunt by Matt Dierolf (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) and an RBI single by Stricker.  McCardell came on in the top of the eighth, hurling two shutout innings to close the door.  Loper was 3-for-5 with two RBI.  Craig was 2-for-4 with two runs.  Philip Rummel (so. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) went seven innings, striking out two for the win.  McCardell, who was named the tournament MVP, hit .529 (9-of-17) with six runs, five doubles and three RBI.  He also saved three of Kutztown's four wins in the tournament, pitching four shutout innings.  The save on Saturday was the 15th of the junior right hander's career, tying the school record (Matt Keller).  With the win, Kutztown improves to 40-12 overall, setting a school record for wins in a season (39, 2005).  KU also claims the PSAC's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship, May 18-21 at a site to be determined.

THU 5/4-SAT 5/6 - at PSAC Championships, at Lock Haven

  THU 5/4 - Kutztown 7, California (PA) 3 - Kutztown scored six runs in its final two at bats to defeat California (PA) in game one of the PSAC Championships, 7-3.  Kutztown took a 1-0 lead in the second when Jackie Messina (so. Allentown/Parkland) knocked in Lindsay Bennett (so. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) on a sacrifice.  Stacey Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) pitched 5.2 innings, striking out three and giving up two unearned runs.  Rachel Weidensaul (so. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) pitched 1.1 innings for her first save.   Kim Morrison (fr. Newmarket, ONT/Sir William Mulock) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.  Bennett and Krista Cameron (fr. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) were both 3-for-4 with a double and RBI.

THU 5/4 - Kutztown 3, Bloomsburg 0 -Weidensaul pitched a complete game shut-out as KU defeated Bloomsburg, 3-0.  Cameron put KU on the board in the second inning with a solo home run.  Caitlin Hague (so. Lansdale/North Penn) hit a pinch-hit double to knock in Kutztown's two other runs in the fourth.  Adriane Willmer (jr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) was 2-for-3 in the game.

FRI 5/5 - Lock Haven 5, Kutztown 1 - Lock Haven scored four runs in the second inning to give KU its first loss of the PSAC playoffs, 5-1.  Stephanie Denlinger (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) scored KU's only run in the fourth after Cameron reached on an error by Lock Haven's shortstop.  Willmer was 2-for-4.  Ashley Fitzgerald (jr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) went 2-for-3. 

SAT 5/6 - Shippensburg 1, Kutztown 0 - Shippensburg hit a walk-off home run and held Kutztown hitless to eliminate KU from the PSAC Championship, 1-0.  Stacey Denlinger struck out five and allowed just three hits.

THU 5/4-5/5- NCAA DIVISION II EAST REGIONAL

THU 5/4 - KUTZTOWN 5, DOWLING 1 - Kutztown utilized two forfeits to defeat Dowling College, 5-1, in NCAA Men's Tennis East Regional first round action.  Golden Bears Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta/INDIA) and Lukas Labitsch (fr. Bruck an der Mur/AUSTRIA) picked up the win for the first point at first doubles, 8-4. Santiago Baquerizo (fr. Guayalquil/ECUADOR) and Radoslaw Hlubinski (sr. Warsaw/POLAND) won at second doubles, 8-4, while Somdeep Appenini (jr. Hyderabad/INDIA) and Rubens Vianna (so. Belo Horizonte/BRAZIL) collected the forfeit at third doubles for KU.  Coming into the singles competition holding a 4-0 advantage, the Golden Bears needed just one match win to seal the victory.  Hlubinski would end the match for the Golden Bears in third singles, picking up the fifth point, 6-2, 6-1.

FRI 5/5 - KUTZTOWN 5, QUEENS 4 - Kutztown University battled back and won five of six in singles matches after Queens College blanked KU in doubles, to win 5-4 in the second round match of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis East Regional.  Vianna was the first win for the Golden Bears, at sixth singles, 6-3, 6-3. Sharma followed at second singles with a commanding win, 6-4, 6-1.  Hlubinski took his match at third singles, 7-6, 7-5 and Appineni won at fifth singles, 7-5, 6-1. Labitsch iced the match for the Golden Bears at fourth singles. After winning a close first set, Labitsch and his opponent fought to another tight set. With Labitsch leading 6-5 and nearing game point, his opponent went down reaching for a volley close to the line, and injured his knee. Continuing to play, Labitsch was able to close it out, 7-6, 7-5.  Kutztown advances to the NCAA Championships held in Kansas City, MO.

FRI 5/5-5/6 - at NCAA Division II East Regional

FRI 5/5 - Kutztown 5, California (PA) 4 - Kutztown avenged an earlier loss to California (Pa) in the PSAC Championships by taking the first round match in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis East Regional from the Vulcans, 5-4.  Magaly Peter (fr. Mundolsheim, FRANCE) and Jharna Nansi (jr. Mumbai, INDIA), at second doubles, were Kutztown's only winners, 8-2.  Peter won at second singles, 6-4, 6-3, Priya Pachkawde (jr. Nasik, INDIA) won third singles, 6-2, 6-2, and Lauren Losoncy (sr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) won fifth singles, 6-0, 6-2, setting the stage for Nansi to seal the deal in her three-set win, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3.

SAT 5/6 - Kutztown 5, Bryant 2 - Kutztown defeated Bryant, 5-2, in the second round.  Kerstin Kloeffer and Pyria Pachkawde started at first singles, defeating Bryant, 8-3.  Peter and Nansi won at second singles, 8-1.  Kloeffer won at first singles, 6-1, 6-3 and Peter won second singles 6-0, 6-1.  Nansi won at fourth singles for the fifth point, 6-3, 6-0.  Kutztown advances to the NCAA Championships in Kansas City, MO.

THU 5/4-5/6 - at PSAC Championships

M: 3rd/14 - Kutztown finished third with 115.5 points at the PSAC Championships.  Shippensburg won the title with 168 points.  Slippery Rock second with 140.5, followed by KU with 115.5.  Lock Haven was fourth (88) and Indiana (PA) fifth (72).  KU's men won three titles.  Tony Hegedus (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) won the 400 hurdles with a time of 52.40.  Steve Winters (sr. Harrisburg/Cedar Cliff) won the pole vault with a height of 15-7.  He was one of four Golden Bears to place in the event as Brian Dodds (so. Wyomissing/Wilson) (15-1) was second, Mike Provenzano (sr. Carlisle/Carlisle) (15-1) was fourth and Mike Zebert (jr. West Chester/Henderson) (14-7) was fifth.  KU's 4x400 relay team of Steve Hixson (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Kendel Dixon (fr. Atglen/Octorara), Matt Carroll (sr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) and Hegedus won the gold with a time of 3:14.60.  Placing second were Carroll in the 400 (48.24) and Steve Tyson (so. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) in the shot put (48-11).  Tyson also placed sixth in the hammer throw (136-5) and seventh in the discus throw (132).  Benn Trasatt (so. Mowsville/Schuylkill Valley) was eighth in the discus (128-7).  Mike Turner (fr. Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) placed in two individual events, he was third in the long jump (22-11 ¼) and sixth in the 100 (11.00).  The 4x100 relay team of Turner, Dixon, Hixson and Justin Gibbs (so. Pottstown/Pottstown) finished sixth (42.44).  Gibbs was fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.05) and Vonkurt Redley (so. Elkins Park/Cheltenham) was sixth (15.07).  KU had three place winners in the 800.  Billy Boorse (jr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) was fourth (1:56.79), Ryan Jagielski (jr. Howell, NJ/Coltsneck) was sixth (1:57.35) and Dave Tidey (sr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) was eighth (2:10.81).  Tidey also placed fifth in the 1500 (4:01.10).  Ian Clark (so. Troy, NH/Monadnock Regional) finished third in the decathlon with 5,881 points.  Cody Hartzler (fr. Belleville/Indian Valley) placed fourth in the high jump (6-4 ¾) and Pat Bone (so. Pipersville/Central Bucks West) was sixth in the 10,000 (32:16.75).

W: 3rd/14 - The Golden Bears placed third at the PSAC Championships with 101 points.  The title was won by Slippery Rock with 207 points, 100 points ahead of second-place Lock Haven.  KU was followed by Shippensburg (87) and Indiana (PA) (78).  Renee Marchand (jr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) won her second-straight heptathlon with 4,485 points (NCAA provisional).  Alison Maurer (sr. Lewisberry/Northern York) won the hammer throw with a distance of 176-2.  She also placed third in the discus throw (136-5).  Maurer was named the PSAC Women's Field Most Valuable Player.  Christine Procopio (sr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) was second in the hammer throw (167-3).  Doofan Tor-Agbidye (fr. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) placed second in the 400-meter dash (56.74) and ran a school record, 56.15, in the preliminaries. Also finishing second were Laura Kline (sr. Reading/Reading) in the 400 hurdles (1:02.23) and the 4x400 relay of Jewel Daye (fr. Philadelphia/Central High), Tor-Agbidye, Marchand and Kline (3:53.52).  The 4x100 relay of Katie Quinn (fr. Glenolden/Interboro), Kline, Daye and Tor-Agbidye came in third (48.72).  Jessica Donovan (fr. Newtown/Pennsbury) finished fifth in the 400 hurdles (1:04.55).  Cheryl Dingman (fr. Lansdale/North Penn) placed fourth in the 1500 (4:45.51), Chelsea Thomas (jr. Sellersville/Pennridge) came in sixth in the 3000 (10:38.57).  Stephanie Williams (so. Harrisburg/Riverside) was third in the 10,000 (38:40.35) and sixth in the 5000 (18:20.53).  Desiree Bower (jr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) finished fourth in the 3000 steeplechase (11:24.36) and Jaci Pfieffer (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) was seventh in the 100 hurdles (15.53).  Laura Deller (so. York/Dallastown) placed fourth in the long jump (17-1 ½) and Alexandra Butler (fr. Montoursville/Montoursville) was eighth (16-8 ½).  Lindsay Runkle (fr. Pottsville/Pottsville) finished seventh in the pole vault (11-0) and Michelle Hughes (so. Warminster/William Tennent) placed eighth in the shot put (37-4).
