Athlete of the Week

Steve Tyson - Track & Field
(jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion)   

       Steve Tyson, of the track & field team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Tyson set the school record and placed first in the shot put at the Lehigh Games.  Tyson tossed the shot 54-1 inch, bettering the previous record of 53-5 1/2 by Mike Fantanarosa in 1994.  It was the third oldest men's outdoor field mark in the record book.  The performance was also an NCAA provisional effort.  Tyson also placed sixth at the Penn Relays in the shot put with a throw of 52-7 1/2.

       THU 4/26 - KUTZTOWN 5, WILMINGTON 3 - Ryan Loper (sr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Garrison Raush (jr. Allentown/Parkland) pitched into the eighth inning to lead Kutztown to a 5-3 over Wilmington (DE). Matt Dierolf (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) was 2-for-3 and Jeff Craig (sr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.  Rausch scattered seven hits over 7.1 innings.  He struck out three and allowed three runs, two earned.  Justin Jachowicz (jr. Summit Hill/Panther Valley) relieved Rausch with one out in the eighth and retired the next two batters.  Darin Gorski (fr. Mount Joy/Donegal) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, with two strikeouts, for his second save of the year.

SAT 4/28 - KUTZTOWN 5, MANSFIELD 4 (10 inn.) - Mike Kacelowicz's (fr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) RBI double drove in the winning run in the 10th inning in a 5-4 win against Mansfield.  KU took a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning, but the Mountaineers belted five straight hits to score four runs and send the game to extra innings.  Jachowicz pitched 3.2 innings of relief for his second win of the season.  Jason Mills (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) started the game going four innings and struck out five.  Sean Bond (sr. Malvern/Great Valley), Mike McCardell (sr. West Chester/Henderson), Rausch and Kacelowicz each had two hits.

KUTZTOWN 2, MANSFIELD 0 - McCardell and Matt Keller (sr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) combined on a four-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Mansfield.  McCardell struck out six over four innings, allowing three hits.  Keller pitched the final three innings for the save, his first of the season. KU scored both of the game's runs in the fourth inning.  

SUN 4/29- Kutztown 9, Mansfield 8 - Kutztown defeated Mansfield 9-8.  KU was led by Craig, who was 1-for-4 with a grand slam.  Loper was 3-for-4, Bond 2-for-4 and Dan Gavlick (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) 1-for-3 with two RBI.  Mansfield stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the first, but KU answered with a five-spot in the third.  Paul Cashin (sr. Collingdale/Monsignor Bonner) scored on a bases-loaded error, then Craig smashed the grand slam for a 5-4 lead.  It was Craig's fifth homer of the year.  The Golden Bears took the lead for good in the fifth on a two-run homer by Gavlick, his second of the season.  Phillip Rummel (jr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) pitched the complete game for his seventh win of the season.

Kutztown 5, Mansfield 2 - Kutztown completed the sweep over Mansfield with a 5-2 victory.  Gorski took a shutout into the seventh inning.  Mansfield scored two runs, but Gorski finished the game for his fourth win of the season.  Kacelowicz, Rausch, McCardell and Gavlick each finished with two hits.  Loper scored two runs.

Kutztown improves to 43-3 overall, one win short of the single-season record for victories, having won its last 14 straight games.  KU's .950 winning percentage in PSAC East games is believed to be the best finish ever in the division.  The league victories match the Golden Bears' team record of 19 PSAC East triumphs, set in 1999.  KU was 19-5 that year, when there were seven teams in the division.  Loper has played in 206 career games, setting the school record.  (205, Al Fitch, 2000-03). Loper has 215 hits for his career and sole possession of second place on KU's career list.

TUE 4/24 - 1st/7 - Kutztown won the Gettysburg Invitational.  Kutztown had a team score of 346 on the par 72, 5,659 yard course at the Links at Gettysburg.  Dickinson was second (378), followed by Gettysburg (407), McDaniel (419), West Chester (434), Susquehanna (442) and Franklin & Marshall (452).  Bethany Adams (so. Schnecksville/Parkland) shot an 82 for second place.  Lauren Foulke (so. Kempton/Kutztown) carded an 84.  Tristin Suzenski (sr. Pottstown/St. Pius X) and Holly Shubilla (sr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) turned in 90s and Angela Petak (jr. Brockway/Brockway) carded a 91.

SAT 4/21 - at East Stroudsburg Invitational

M: The KU men competed at the All-America Invitational at ESU.  In the field, Steve Tyson (jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) threw a NCAA provisional mark of 52-9 1/4 in the shot put, good for first place.  Trenton Branam (fr. Pennsbury/Pennsbury) placed first in the javelin with a distance of 191-4.  Chris Boutsikaris (so. Andover, NJ/Newtown) came in third (183-2).  In the discus throw, Jason Rebuck (fr. Southampton/William Tennent) claimed second with a throw of 145-3.  Cody Hartzler (so. Belleville/Indian Valley) came in first in the high jump with a height of 6-4.  Brian Dodds (jr. Wyomissing/Wilson) claimed first in the pole vault with a height of 15-0 and TJ Longmore (jr. Center Valley/Manheim Twp.) finished third in the long jump with a jump of 21-3 1/2.  In the running events, Joe Haughey (sr. Richboro/Council Rock South) came in first in the 5000-meter run in a time of 15:51.37.  Pat Coyne (sr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) was second in the 3000 in 9:03.97.  Longmore was second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.51 and Cory Crider (fr. Mechanicsburg/Cedar Cliff) placed third with a time of 15.79.  Pat McKeever (jr. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) finished third in the 800 in 1:57.75.  

W: The KU women claimed eight first place finishes at the All-America Invitational at East Stroudsburg.  Doofan Tor-Agbidye (so. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) came in first in the 400-meter run in a time of 58-14. Joanna Horstmann (so. Downingtown/Downingtown West) placed the 800 with a time of 2:17.69.  Maureen Watson (fr. Walnutport/Allentown Central Cath.) placed second in 2:24.21 and Jessica Schlecter (fr. Chalfont/Central Bucks South) was third in 2:24.28.  Stephanie Williams (jr. Harrisburg/Riverside) won the 3000 with an NCAA provisional time of 10:12.17.  Desiree Bower (sr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) was third in 10:41.86.  Williams also placed first in the 1500 in 4:54.73.  Bower came in third in 5:13.00.  Katie Quinn (so. Glenolden/Interboro) placed second in the 200 in 25.70.  Quinn came in third in the 100 in 12.63.  Renee Marchand (sr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) was victorious in the 100 hurldes in 15.57.  Jessica Donovan (so. Newtown/Pennsbury) finished third in the 400 hurdles (1:08.63).  The 4x400 relay of Laura Deller (jr. York/Dallastown), Marchand, Brooke McMurray (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) and Tor-Agbidye finished first with a time of 3:59.58.  The 4x100 relay team of Corri Speakman (Reading/Exeter), Quinn, Deller and Tor-Agbidye came in second with a time of 48.74.  In the field events, Deller finished first in the long jump with a jump of 17-0 3/4. Alex Butler (so. Montoursville/Montoursville) was third with a jump of 16-11 1/2.  In the pole vault, Kelly Strickland (fr. Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) came in first with a height of 11-0.  Rachel Weigle (fr. Red Lion/Red Lion) was second with a height of 10-0 and Alison Wise (fr. Denver/Garden Spot) was third with a height of 9-6.  Marchand placed third in the high jump with a height of 5-2 1/4 and McMurray was third with a height of 5-2 1/4.  Michelle Hughes (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) finished second in the discus (112-4), the hammer (127-0 1/2) and third in the shot put (37-5 1/4).  Rebecca Griffin (jr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) placed third in the hammer (119-7).

THU 4/26-FRI 4/27 - at Penn Relays - Kutztown University's women's 4x400-meter relay placed first in its heat at the Penn Relays.  The team of Spangenberg, Marchand, Quinn and Tor-Agbidye ran a time of 3:49.37.  Tyson placed sixth in the eastern flight of shot put with a throw of 52-7 1/2.

SAT 4/28 - at Lehigh Invitational 

M: Kutztown University junior Tyson set the school record in the shot put, to lead Kutztown's track & field teams at the Lehigh Games.  Tyson tossed the shot 54-1 inch, bettering the previous record of 53-5 1/2 by Mike Fantanarosa in 1994.  It was the third oldest men's outdoor field mark in the record book.  The performance was also an NCAA provisional effort.  Other event winners for the men were Hixson in the 400 (50.10) and Dodds in the pole vault (13-11 1/4).  The 4x100 relay team of Branam, Crider, Hixson and Shappell came in second in 43.60.  Hartzler placed second in the high jump (6-4).  Boutsikaris finished second in the hammer (150-8) and third in the javelin (187-11).  Justin Gibbs (jr. Pottstown/Pottstown) came in third in the 110 hurdles (14.94) and McKeever was third in the 800 (1:56.78).

W: McMurray placed third in the high jump with an NCAA provisional height of 5-6.   Event winners for KU were Horstman in the 400 (1:00.09), Williams in the 1500 (4:47.81) and the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.  The 4x400 relay team of McMurray, Horstmann, Schlecter and Watson finished first (4:07.12) as did the 4x100 relay team of Speakman, Quinn, Deller and Tor-Agbidye (48.64).  In the long jump, Deller placed second (16-10 3/4) and Butler came in third (16-10 1/2).  Marchand came in third in the 110 hurdles (16.24).  Tor-Agbidye finished third in the 100 (12.81) and Quinn was third in the 200 (26.04).

Last Week's Action

TUE 4/24- KUTZTOWN 6, WEST CHESTER 3 - Kutztown defeated West Chester 6-3.  The Golden Bears were led by Ashley Fitzgerald (so. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection), who was 1-for-3 with four RBI.  Kim Morrison (so. Newmarket, ONT/Sir William Mulock) and Adriane Willmer (sr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) were both 2-for-4.  Krista Cameron (so. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) hit a home run.  Maria Schiavo (fr. Old Forge/Old Forge) scored two runs.  KU broke it open in the fourth.  Fitzgerald belted a three-run double to make it 5-0.  Kaitlin Arbogast (fr. Ambler/Wissahickon) finished with 12 strikeouts in the complete game win. 

KUTZTOWN 6, WEST CHESTER 2 - KU completed the sweep of West Chester with a 6-2 win.  Steph Denlinger (so. Harleysville/Souderton) blasted a homer in the third.  Schiavo gave the Bears the lead for good with an RBI single, plating Willmer, in the bottom of the fourth.  Rachel Weidensaul (jr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) went the distance, striking out six.  Lindsay Bennett (jr. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.  Cameron was 3-for-4 with two runs.  Denlinger was 2-for-3.

SAT 4/28 - Kutztown 8, Mansfield 2 - Arbogast pitched a complete game for the 8-2 victory. She struck out eight. She also upped her innings pitched to 205.2 on the year, bettering the record of 205 by Tiffany Mattiuz in 1995.  Denlinger was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.  Cameron was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and Bennett added two RBI. 

Kutztown 10, Mansfield 2 - A five-run fourth set KU up for the 10-2 win over Mansfield.  The inning was highlighted by Cameron's two-run shot.  She moved into second place on KU's career homers list with her 24th.  Weidensaul went the distance for the win.  Morrison was 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Willmer finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored.  Denlinger was 2-for-2 with a run, RBI and three walks.  Fitzgerald added four RBI.

SUN 4/29 - KUTZTOWN 6, MILLERSVILLE 2 - Arbogast set Kutztown's single-season record for pitching victories, as she improved to 25-7, in the 6-2 win over Millersville.  The previous record of 24 was held by Tiffany Mattiuz (1995).  Schiavo was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Willmer was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.  Fitzgerald was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Kutztown took the lead for good with four runs in the sixth.   Cameron, Fitzgerald and Dani Spalik (sr. Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) had RBI singles, and KU scored another run on a wild pitch.  

MILLERSVILLE 4, KUTZTOWN 3 - Millersville scored two runs in the seventh for a come-from-behind win, 4-3, over Kutztown.  Weidensaul pitched 6+ innings, taking the loss.  Arbogast pitched the remainder of the seventh inning.  Schiavo was 2-for-3.  Fitzgerald went 2-for-2 with a walk.  

KU won its first PSAC East title since 1994, when it shared the title with Bloomsburg.  KU also set school records for the most overall wins in a season with 40 (KU won 38 in 1995) and wins in the conference with 22 (KU won 19 in 2000).  As a team, Kutztown added two season records - hit-by-pitches (24) and sacrifice flies (18).

The loss in game two against Millersville snapped the Golden Bears' school record 22 game winning streak.  KU hit four doubles on the afternoon to set the PSAC single-season record with 119 (118, Bloomsburg, 2000).  The team also set the PSAC single-season record for extra-base hits with 185 (181, Lock Haven, 2006).

The Golden Bears shattered more individual records this week.  Steph Denlinger had five RBI to set KU's single-season RBI list (67, previous mark was 63 by Jen Schock in 1995).  She also set the KU record for total bases (144).   Denlinger broke the PSAC record for walks in a season, currently at 43. Ashley Fitzgerald has 19 doubles on the year for a single-season record.  Krista Cameron has 18.  Three other players held the previous record with 16.  Maria Schiavo recorded her 23rd sacrifice hit to set a single-season record. (22, Stacey Necessary 1996).  Adriane Willmer broke the single-season mark of at-bats of 191 (Marcy Lieb, 1995).  She now has 203.  Willmer also set the career runs score with 171 (168, Lorie Erie).
