Athlete of the Week

Ashley Singer, Swimming

       Ashley Singer set two Kutztown records and qualified for nationals at the PSAC Championships this past weekend.  Singer led off the 800 yard free relay and swam 1:53.94 to qualify for nationals.  Singer placed second in the 500 freestyle with a KU record of 5:06.01. She also set a record in the 200 free placing second with a time of 1:54.15.  In both events, Singer broke her own records, bettering her time in the 200 (1:55.72) and in the 500 (5:09.20), both from 2006.  She also finished fourth in the 100 free with an NCAA B-cut time of 53.36.

THU 2/22-SUN 2/24 - at Newport News, VA

THU 2/22 - Kutztown 7, East Stroudsburg 2 - Kutztown opened play at the Apprentice School Builder Invitational with a 7-2 win over East Stroudsburg.  Jeff Craig (sr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) was 2-for-2 with three RBI, including a two-run homer in the third.  Nate Kranz (so. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) was 1-for-4 with two runs scored.  Philip Rummel (jr Exeter/West-Mont Christian) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and no runs with four strikeouts.  

FRI 2/23 - Kutztown 13, Apprentice 0 (7inn.) - Darin Gorski (fr. Mount Joy/Donegal) and Mike Bucklin (fr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) combined for a no-hitter against Apprentice.  Kutztown won the game 13-0.  Gorski pitched 5.0 innings and struck out seven.  Bucklin pitched the final two innings and struck out two.  Chad Lightcap (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI.

SAT 2/24 - Kutztown 8, Lock Haven 6 - Jason Mills (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) pitched six inning for the win as Kutztown defeated Lock Haven, 8-6.  Mills gave up three runs, two earned,  and struck-out six.  Mike McCardell (sr. West Chester/Henderson) picked up the save.  Sean Bond (sr. Malvern/Great Valley) went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Matt Dierolf (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.

Kutztown 12, Bloomsburg 2 - Lightcap was 5-for-5 with six RBI to lead Kutztown to a 12-2 win over Bloomsburg.  Lightcap, who was a triple short of the cycle, belted a three-run homer in Kutztown's six-run third inning.  He added RBI singles in the fifth and eighth innings.  Kranz was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Craig was 2-for-5 and McCardell was 2-for-6.  Scott Kacelowicz (fr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) hit a two-run homer in the third.  Five pitchers took the mound for KU, striking out a combined 14 Huskie batters.  Matt Keller (sr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) started and went three innings, striking out four. Garrison Rausch (jr. Allentown/Parkland) pitched two scoreless innings of relief, fanning two, for the win.
