Athlete of the Week
Ashley Singer, Swimming
(jr. Lititz/Warwick)
Ashley Singer, of the women's swimming team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Singer set two school records and had two honorable mention All-America performances at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships in Buffalo, NY. She set a school record in the 1000 free (10:42.18) and in the 200 free (1:53.35).

SAT 3/10-SAT 3/17 - at Savannah Invitational (Savannah, GA)
MON 3/12 - Kutztown 11, West Liberty St. 7 - Jeff Craig (sr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) knocked in five runs as KU defeated West Liberty State, 11-7, at the Savannah Invitational. Craig was 4-for-6 on the afternoon and scored two runs. Ryan Loper (sr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Jason Mills (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) pitched eight innings and struck out nine for the win.
TUE 3/13 - Kutztown 16, West Liberty St. 2 - For the second time in two days, Kutztown defeated West Liberty State. KU had two four-run innings en route to the 16-2 win. Darin Gorski (fr. Mount Joy/Donegal) pitched six innings, striking out seven for the win. Dom Fantanarosa (so. Coatesville/Coatesville) was 5-for-6 in the game with two doubles, two runs scored and a RBI. Sean Bond (sr. Malvern/Great Valley) was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Mike Kacelowicz (fr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI.
Kutztown 10, Fairmont St. 4 - A strong start put KU over Fairmont State, 10-4. The Golden Bears scored three runs in the second and third innings. Bond was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, a run and two doubles. Loper pitched six innings for the win.
WED 3/14 - Kutztown 2, Fairmont St. 1 - Bryan Riggins (jr. Glenmore/Downingtown West) had an RBI double in the second as Kutztown defeated Fairmont State, 2-1. Mike Bucklin (fr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) pitched eight innings, striking out 10 for the win. Mike McCardell (sr. West Chester/Henderson) pitched the ninth for the save.
Kutztown 8, Armstrong Atlantic 2 - A four-run ninth clinched the win for KU over Armstrong Atlantic, 8-2. Kutztown got on the board in the fifth inning when McCardell and Mills hit solo shots. McCardell and Mills each went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double. Chad Lightcap (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) was 3-for-4 and Kacelowicz was 2-for-4, scoring two runs. Ryan Cassidy (fr. Langhorne/Archbishop Wood) went 5.1 innings for the win.
THU 3/15 - Kutztown 7, Armstrong Atlantic State 3 - Kutztown scored six runs over the last three innings to come-from-behind and defeat Armstrong Atlantic State, 7-3. Nate Kranz (so. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) was 2-for-4 with two runs and Loper and Craig were both 2-for-5. Loper scored twice. McCardell had a two-run single in the eighth. Philip Rummel (jr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) was the winner, going six innings, allowing six hits with three strikeouts. Derick Reis (jr. Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) picked up the save, striking out two over the final three scoreless innings.
FRI 3/16 - Kutztown 2, California (PA) 1 (10 inn.) - Craig drove in Lightcap in the top of the 10th inning to give Kutztown 2-1 win over California in Savannah, GA. California scored a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Kutztown tied the score in the top of the 8th inning when Kranz scored on a Lightcap single. McCardell pitched the final three innings for the win, striking out six. Lightcap was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
SAT 3/17 - Armstrong Atlantic State 18, Kutztown 3 - Kutztown lost to Armstrong Atlantic State, 18-3. Bond was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Craig was 3-for-4.

*MON 3/12 - Kutztown 9, Univ. of Charleston 0 - KU defeated the University of Charleston, 9-0. Santiago Baquerizo (so. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) won at #1 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Lukas Labitsch (so. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-1 at #2. Gernot Gruss (fr. Rheinland Pfalz, GERMANY) won 6-0, 6-0 at #3 singles. At #4 singles, Somdeep Appineni (sr. Hyderabad, INDIA) won 6-2, 6-1. Lukas Beman (sr. Wooden, AUSTRALIA) won #5 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and Rubens Vianna (jr. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) won 6-0, 6-0 at #6. In doubles action, Baquerizo and Labitsch won 8-2 at #1. Vianna and Beman won 8-2 at #2 and Appineni and Arpit Sharma (fr. Kolkata, INDIA) won 8-1 at #3.
WED 3/14 - Armstrong Atlantic State 7, Kutztown 2 - KU won two doubles matches but lost to Armstrong Atlantic, 7-2. Baquerizo and Labitsch won at #1 doubles, 8-3, and Gruss and Appineni won #2 doubles, 8-4.
*THU 3/15 - Colgate 4, Kutztown 3 - Colgate defeated Kutztown, 4-3, using Division I match scoring. Kutztown took two of the doubles matches for the doubles point. Baquerizo and Labitsch won 8-5 at #1 while Gruss and Appineni won 8-3 at #3. Baquerizo won his singles match, 6-2, 6-3, at #1 and Gruss defeated his opponent, 6-3, 6-0 at #5. SUN 3/18 - Kutztown 5, Barton 4 - It came down to the last set in #6 singles, but Vianna defeated his opponent, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 for the win. Baquerizo won his match at #1 singles, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 and Labitsch won #3 singles, 6-2, 6-3. Baquerizo and Labitsch won a close #1 doubles match, 9-8, as did Gruss and Appineni at #3 doubles, 9-7.

FRI 3/16-SAT 3/17 - at Coastal Carolina Invitational
M: The men's outdoor track and field team traveled to Coastal Carolina to open its season at the Shamrock Invitational. Steve Tyson (jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) came in fourth in the shot put with a throw of 50-0 3/4. Cody Hartzler (so. Belleville/Indian Valley) placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 6-5 3/4. In the Javelin, Chris Boutsikaris (so. Andover, NJ/Newtown) finished eighth with a throw of 167-0. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Dan Wilde (sr. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) came in seventh (9:49.65) and Joe Haughey (sr. Richboro/Council Rock South) placed eighth (9:50.12). The 4x400 relay of Steve Hixson (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Hartzler, Tony Hegedus (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) and Jason Rowles (fr. Springfield/Marple Newtown) finished sixth with a time of 3:29.77.
W: The women's outdoor track and field team opened its season at the Shamrock Invitational at Coastal Carolina. Desiree Bower (sr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) came in first in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 11:29.62. Stephanie Williams (jr. Harrisburg/Riverside) placed second in the 10,000 run in 37:22.21, an NCAA provisional time. The 4x400 relay team of Laura Deller (jr. York/Dallastown), Renee Marchand (sr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack), Heather Spangenberg (fr. Clarks Summit/Abington Heights) and Doofan Tor-Agbidye (so. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) finished second with a time of 4:02.81. In the field events, Lindsay Runkle (so. Port Carbon/Pottsville) came in fourth in the pole vault with a height of 10-6. Kelly Strickland (fr. Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) was fifth with a height of 10-6. Rebecca Kerchak (so. Sinking Spring/Wilson) placed sixth in the heptathlon with 3,361 points and Morgan Woronecki (fr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) finished eighth with 2,633 points.

*MON 3/12 - Kutztown 10, Lees-McRae 6 - Kutztown scored two runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory, 10-6, over Lees-McRae at the Smash Hit Tournament. Lindsay Bennett (jr. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) hit an RBI double to drive in Steph Denlinger (so. Harleysville/Souderton) in the third to give KU the lead for good. Adriane Willimer (sr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) was 3-for-4 with three runs and two doubles. Ashley Fitzgerald (so. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) hit a home run. Rachel Weidensaul (jr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) pitched six innings for the win.
Kutztown 8, Illinois-Springfield 1- KU scored four runs in the second and fourth innings for win 8-1 over Illinois-Springfield. Denlinger hit a home run for KU. Kim Morrison went 3-for-4 with a double. Kaitlin Arbogast (fr. Ambler/Wissahickon) pitched a complete game, striking out 12.
*TUE 3/13 - Kutztown 8, Bluefield 0 (5inn) - Arbogast pitched a perfect game and struck out 12, as KU defeated Bluefield, 8-0 in five innings. Krista Cameron (so. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) hit a three-run triple in the first inning.
Kutztown 10, Chowan 2 (5 inn) - Kutztown had a seven-run fourth to defeat Chowan, 14-2 in five innings. Weidensaul pitched a complete game, striking out five. Willmer led off the game with a solo shot. Sam Flowers (jr. Harleysville/Souderton) was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Maria Schiavo (fr. Old Forge/Old Forge) went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Bennett was 2-for-3 and scored three runs.
WED 3/14 - Armstrong Atlantic State 9, Kutztown 0 (5 inn.) - KU managed just one hit, a single by Fitzgerald in the fourth inning, and lost to Armstrong Atlantic, 9-0, in game one.
Armstrong Atlantic State 5, Kutztown 4 - In the second game, KU's offense came alive. KU scored two runs in the second to take a lead, but the Pirates came back to take a 4-3 lead heading into the seventh. Kutztown knotted the score on an RBI single by Morrison, but AASU won the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
*THU 3/15 - Kutztown 12, Missouri Baptist 2 - KU rapped out 15 hits en route to a 12-2 win over Missouri Baptist. Willmer was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Schiavo was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Fitzgerald was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Denlinger was 2-for-3. Caitlin Hague (jr. Lansdale/North Penn) was 2-for-2 with three runs. Kathy Gregg (jr. Narvon/Garden Spot) was 2-for-3 with three runs. Weidensaul was the winner, striking out five over seven innings.
Kutztown 15, Bluefield State 10 - The Golden Bears closed the Smash Hit Tournament with a 15-10 shootout win over Bluefield State. Denlinger hit her 22nd career home run in the sixth inning, moving into a tie for second place on KU's career chart, one shy of the career record. She finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored. KU broke it open with four in the fourth, including a three-run homer by Flowers. Willmer was 3-for-5 with two runs. Schiavo was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Kim Morrison (so. Newmarket, ONT/Sir William Mulock) was 2-for-4 with three runs. Fitzgerald was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Bennett was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Flowers was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Hague was 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Arbogast was the winner, with 10 strikeouts. Willmer, Denlinger and Bennett were named to the All-Tournament Team.
