Desiree Bower - W. Track & Field
(sr. Bethel/Tulpehocken)
Desiree Bower, of the women's track & field team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Bower earned All-America honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She placed eighth in the event with a time of 10:56.19. She broke her own school record in the preliminaries (10:55.36).

FRI 5/25-SUN 5/27 - NCAA Championships (at Montgomery, AL)
FRI 5/25 - Nebraska-Omaha 5, Kutztown 4 (10 innings) - Nebraska-Omaha hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat Kutztown in game one of the NCAA Division II World Series at Riverwalk Stadium. The home run capped a see-saw battle that featured five lead changes. Both teams twice battled from behind, with the Mavericks getting the final punch in the 10th. Kutztown trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. With runners at first and third and two outs, Nate Kranz (so. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) laced a line drive into right field to tie the score. Matt Keller (sr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) took the loss (6-2), throwing three innings of relief. Jason Mills (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) started, striking out three over the first six innings. Ryan Loper (sr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) was 3-for-5. Kranz and Mike McCardell (sr. West Chester/Henderson) had two hits apiece.
SUN 5/27 - Cal State-Los Angeles 4, Kutztown 1 - Kutztown was eliminated from the Division II College World Series with a 4-1 loss to California State-Los Angeles Sunday afternoon. The loss brings an end to Kutztown's record-breaking season, in which KU set school and conference records for wins (49). KU ends the year with a 49-7 record. The game was a pitchers' duel for the first six innings, as KU hurler McCardell and CSULA's pitcher blanked the opposing batters. In the top of the seventh, the Golden Eagles' scored two runs on a home run. The Eagles added two insurance runs in the ninth inning. Kutztown scored its lone run in the bottom of the ninth. Garrison Rausch (jr. Allentown/Parkland), who was 3-for-4, tripled and scored on Mike Kacelowicz's (fr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) groundout. McCardell (7-3) took the loss, going eight innings, allowing six hits and four runs. He struck out seven. Philip Rummel (jr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) relieved him in the ninth, allowing one hit. Craig was 3-for-4 and Bond added a pair of hits

Women: t-58th/62 - Kutztown University sent three athletes to the NCAA Division II Championships, hosted by Johnson C. Smith University. Desiree Bower (sr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) completed her collegiate career in style, earning All-America honors. She placed eighth in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, with a time of 10:56.19. It is Bower's first career All-America honor, earned in the senior's final collegiate race. Bower set KU's school record in the event in the preliminaries on Thursday, with a time of 10:55.36. Bower's eight-place finish earns Kutztown one point in the team standings. KU finished tied for 58th out of 62 teams who scored team points. Renee Marchand (sr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) finished with 4,669 points in the heptathlon for 11th place. She was less than 100 points from eighth placeStephanie Williams (jr. Harrisburg/Riverside) placed seventh in her heat of the women's 5,000-meter run. her time of 17:50.42 was less that three seconds behind the last qualifier for Saturday's finals (17:48.07).
Men: no team score - Steve Tyson (jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) placed 11th in the men's shot put at the NCAA Championships. Tyson recorded a shot put of 53-1 3/4.
