Athlete of the Week
Katlin Arbogast, softball
(so. Ambler/Wissahickon)
Katlin Arbogast, of the softball team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Arbogast went 4-1 with an 0.54 ERA in 26 innings. She had 26 strikeouts and helped KU claim its second straight PSAC East title with her wins in four consecutive divisional games. One of the wins included a one-hit shutout of Shippensburg.

MON 4/21 - Albright 5, KU 4 - KU lost to Berks County foe Albright at First Energy Stadium, home of the Reading Phillies. Andy May (r-fr. Biglerville/Biglerville) was 2-for-3 with a home run. Michael Dugan (r-fr. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Garrison Rausch (sr. Allentown/Parkland) was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Brett Wigder (fr. Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) had two RBIs.
TUE 4/22 - KU 4, Shippensburg 2 - KU picked up a PSAC inter-division victory at Shippensburg. May was 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Chad Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. James Quigley (fr. Bensalem/Bensalem) had a double and scored. Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) had an RBI single, scoring Wigder. Steve Craig (jr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) started and went the first three innings, allowing three hits and two unearned runs. Mike Bucklin (so. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) got the win, allowing just three hits over five scoreless innings of relief. Jachowicz pitched the ninth for his first save of the year.
FRI 4/25 - West Chester 2, KU 0 - Philip Rummel (sr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) limited the Golden Rams to two runs on six hits and one walk, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Bears were shut out in the first game of a doubleheader at Serpico Stadium. Rausch managed the only hit for the Golden Bears.
FRI 4/25 - KU 13, West Chester 3 - The Golden Bears' bats came alive in the second game of their doubleheader with the Golden Rams. Quigley went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Matt Kulbacki (so. Hershey/Hershey) was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Kulbacki hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Jared Frey (so. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley), who scored on the home run, hit an RBI single earlier in the inning. Nole Saylor (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown), who went 2-for-4, doubled to start off the second inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lightcap. Lightcap finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Kacelowicz was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Kulbacki and Dugan both had RBI singles. May had a pinch-hit RBI single, and Jeff Kistle (r-fr. Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny) and Wigder both scored on wild pitches. Bucklin took over on the mound in the second inning and collected the win. He held West Chester to just two hits over five innings of work. Bucklin struck out five batters.
SAT 4/26 - KU 8, West Chester 2 - Darin Gorski (so. Mount Joy/Donegal) pitched the Golden Bears to a win in game one of their doubleheader with the Golden Rams at North Campus Field. Gorski collected his sixth complete game, limiting West Chester to two runs - one earned - on four hits and four walks. He had eight strikeouts. Corey Buletza (fr. St. Clair/Pottsville) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Lightcap went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored. Lightcap's three RBIs came on one hit, a bases-clearing double. Quigley had an RBI double.
SAT 4/26 - KU 8, West Chester 6 - The Golden Bears held off a late Golden Rams' rally to complete their doubleheader sweep at North Campus Field. Buletza went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Lightcap and Kacelowicz each scored two runs. Derick Reis (sr. Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) started for KU, pitching 5 1/3 innings. He held West Chester to two runs on four hits and one walk. He struck out four. Quigley went 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Frey had an RBI single and a run scored. Scott Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) and Rausch also had RBI singles.
SUN 4/27 - Wilmington (Del.) 6, KU 3 - KU couldn't hang on to an early 3-0 lead, falling to the Wildcats 6-3 in the opening game of a doubleheader at Wilmington Sunday. Kulbacki had a two-run home run and Mark Renda (r-fr. Lansdale/North Penn) had a run-scoring single. Quigley was 2-for-3, while Kulbacki finished 1-for-3.
SUN 4/27 - Wilmington (Del.) 13, KU 11 - Wilmington scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 10-10 tie and complete the sweep of KU. Andy May hit a two-run double and Dom Fantanarosa (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville) hit an RBI double. Lightcap was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, including a three-run double in the second inning. Dugan was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. May was 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Saylor and Fantanarosa each scored twice.

TUE 4/22 - 2nd/3 at Gettysburg Invitational - Angela Petak (sr. Brockway/Brockway) shot an 82 to lead KU to a second-place showing at the Gettysburg Invitational Tuesday. KU had a team score of 340 on the par 72, 5,801 yard course. Lehigh was the team winner with a score of 325. West Chester was third with a score of 399. Petak's score of 82 was good for a tie for third place. Kelli Pry (fr. Coatesville/Coatesville) shot an 85 to tie for sixth with Samantha Rumbley (fr. Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright). Lauren Foulke (jr. Kempton/Kempton) shot an 88 for sixth place, while Krista Tressler (so. Fayetteville/Heritage Academy) carded an 89 for ninth place.
Softball (44-10, 21-3 PSAC East)

TUE 4/22 - LOCK HAVEN 2, KU 1 - A two-out, two-run homer in the top of the seventh propelled Lock Haven over KU in game one of a PSAC inter-division matchup at North Campus Field. Maria Schiavo (so. Old Forge/Old Forge) hit an infield single to drive in Maggie Reifsnyder (fr. Philadelphia/Littleflower) for KU's only run. Katlin Arbogast (so. Ambler/Wissahickon) allowed six hits and two runs with seven strikeouts.
TUE 4/22 - LOCK HAVEN 16, KU 0 - Lock Haven scored 16 runs on 16 hits to take game two of the doubleheader. Kim Morrison (jr. Newmarket, ONTARIO/Sir William Mulock) had the only hit of the contest for the Golden Bears.
FRI 4/25 - KU 7, Shippensburg 0 - Arbogast led the Golden Bears in a shutout win over the Red Raiders, pitching a one-hitter in game one of their doubleheader at Robb Field. Arbogast pitched seven innings, limiting Shippensburg to one hit and two walks. She struck out nine. Steph Denlinger (jr. Harleysville/Souderton) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Ashley Fitzgerald (jr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Schiavo had a two-run single, plating Morrison and Kathy Gregg (sr. Narvon/Garden Spot). Both Gregg and Morrison went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Krista Tedjeske (fr. Summerhill/Forest Hills) had two RBIs. Krista Cameron (jr. Formosa, ONTARIO/Sacred Heart) finished 2-for-4 and scored a run.
FRI 4/25 - KU 9, Shippensburg 0 (5 inn.) - Denlinger and Fitzgerald powered the Golden Bears to a shutout win in five innings in the second game of their doubleheader against Shippensburg. Denlinger opened the scoring with a three-run homer to deep centerfield in the third inning. Schiavo finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Fitzgerald also had three hits, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.
SAT 4/26 - KU 4, West Chester 2 (9 inn.) - The Golden Bears scored two runs in the top of the ninth to defeat West Chester in extra innings and clinch the PSAC East title. Tedjeske and Angela Domenici (fr. Kunkletown/Pleasant Valley) each had RBI singles in the ninth inning. Cameron, Fitzgerald and Schiavo each went 3-for-5. Morrison went 3-for-4. Denlinger hit a home run. Arbogast collected the win, pitching the eighth and ninth innings, holding West Chester to no hits, while striking out one. Monica Glomb (fr. Mars/Mars) started for KU, limiting West Chester to two runs on four hits and no walks.
SAT 4/26 - KU 6, West Chester 0 - KU won game two of its doubleheader with West Chester to set a new school record for wins in a season with 44. Tedjeske and Morrison both went 2-for-3 at the plate, with each having a single and a double, and Denlinger was 1-for-3 on game, and hit her 15th homer of the season. Arbogast started, throwing five innings, allowing three hits while striking out six. Mary Hoch (Somerton/St. Hubert's) tossed the final two innings for KU, and allowing one hit and striking out three.

FRI 4/25 - KU 5, Millersville 2 - KU defeated Millersville University in the semifinals of the PSAC tournament. Arpit Sharma (so. Kolkata,INDIA) accounted for two of the five wins for KU, as he teamed with Lukas Labitsch (jr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) to secure a win in first doubles, 8-6. In second singles, Sharma won 6-3, 6-2. KU won five of the six singles matches, as Andrew Torrealba (so. Pembrek Pines, Fla./Chales Franasan), Robert Zerwick (fr. Bowers/Kutztown), Nick Gallagher (jr. King of Prussia/Upper Merion), and Sendhur Gautham (sr. Chennai, INDIA) all picked up victories.
SAT 4/26 - Bloomsburg 5, KU 1 - Bloomsburg won three singles matches and two doubles matches to end KU's run of conference titles in the PSAC finals. Labitsch and Sharma picked up KU's only win with an 8-5 defeat in the No. 1 doubles match. KU had won the last four PSAC titles and seven of the last eight.

FRI 4/25 - California (Pa.) 7, KU 0 - KU was swept in its doubles and singles matches and fell to No. 5 California (Pa.) in the semifinals of the PSAC Championships.
SAT 4/26 - Bloomsburg 5, KU 2 - KU fell to Bloomsburg in the consolation match of the PSAC Championships. Rohini Das (so. Kolkata, INDIA) and Barbara Joerns (so. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles match 8-4, and Das collected the a win in the No. 2 singles match, winning 6-1, 6-1.

THU 4/24 - KU women at Penn Relays - The KU women's track and field team kicked off the Penn Relays for the Golden Bears participating in three events at Franklin Field. Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) placed 15th in the 3,000 with an NCAA provisional time of 9:58.78, the second-fastest time ever in the 3,000 by a KU women's runner. It was about one second off the pace of the school record, 9:57.7, by Eunice Chege in 1997. Her NCAA provisional time also placed her seventh on the current NCAA list. Ashley Pinter (fr. Bethlehem/Liberty) had the highest finish Thursday for KU, placing 10th in the hammer throw with a toss of 155-7. The 1,600 relay team of Joanna Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown West), Heather Spangenberg (so. Clarks Summit/Abington Heights), Laura Deller (sr. York/Dallastown) and Katie Colburn (fr. Hanover/South Western) finished third in their heat and 68th overall with a time of 4:00.20.
FRI 4/25 - KU men at Penn Relays - The KU men's track and field team was in action at the Penn Relays Friday at Franklin Field, placing two athletes and two relay teams in the top 15. Justin Germani (fr. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) picked up the Golden Bears' best finish of the day landing in seventh place in the pole vault with a 15-7. Steve Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) finished 12th in the shot put with a throw of 49-1. Justin Gibbs (sr. Pottstown/Pottstown), Shane Harvey (fr. Potterburg, N.J./North Hunterdon), T.J. Longmore (so. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) and Vonkurt Redley (sr. Philadelphia/Cheltenham) teamed up to finish 10th in the shuttle hurdles with a time of 59.70 seconds. Redley and Gibbs also teamed with Kendel Dixon (so. Atglen/Octorara) and Steve Hixson (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) to place third in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:17.52.
SAT 4/26 - KU women at Lehigh Games - Event winners for KU, on the women's side, were Spangenberg in the 400 (59.16), Horstmann in the 800 (2:15.22), Michelle Hughes (sr. Warminster/William Tennent) in the shot put (40-7 3/4) and Pinter in the discus (136-4). Pinter also placed second in the shot put (40-1 1/4) and third in the hammer (155-4), while Hughes was second in the discus (133-2) and fifth in the hammer (149-7). Other top performances on the track included Samirah Barczynski (so. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) in the 200 (3rd, 27.09) and 100 (4th, 13.01); Jolene Collins (so. Palmyra/Palmyra) in the 800 (5th, 2:21.16) and Jessica Schlechter (so. Chalfont/Central Bucks South) in the 800 (6th, 2:21.47); Kristin Green (sr. Camp Hill/Camp Hill) in the 5,000 (4th, 19:30.69), Colburn in the 100 hurdles (6th, 16.72), Lynn Lisofsky (fr. Wilkes-Barre/Coughlin) in the 400 hurdles (2nd, 1:06.74) and Jessica Donovan (jr. Newtown/Pennsbury) in the 400 hurdles (3rd, 1:07.57). KU's 400 relay team of Barczynski, Spangenberg, Laura Deller (sr. York/Dallastown) and Donovan was second (49.59), while the 1600 relay team of Collins, Maureen Watson (so. Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic), Becky Webb (so. Laurys Station/Parkland) and Michele Celenza (jr. Lansdale/North Penn) was sixth (4:22.60). Other top performances in the field included Rebekah Leitzel (fr. Spring Mills/Penns Valley) in the javelin (3rd, 127-7), Alex Butler (jr. Montoursville/Montoursville) in the long jump (2nd, 16-3 ¾), Deller in the long jump (3rd, 16-1), Kelly Strickland (so. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) in the pole vault (tie-3rd, 10-11 ¾) and Rachel Weigle (so. Red Lion/Red Lion) in the pole vault (tie-6th, 10-6).
SAT 4/26 - KU men at Lehigh Games - Jim Dart (sr. Havertown/Haverford) broke the KU men's track and field record in the discus, leading the Golden Bears at the Lehigh Games. Dart was third in the event, with a performance of 161-10. The mark eclipsed the record of KU hall of famer Frank Williams, who set the previous record in 1976 with a throw of-160-9. It was the longest-standing record on the books at KU. Dart's throw also was an NCAA provisional distance. Jason Rebuck (so. Southampton/William Tennent) was fourth in the event with a NCAA provisional effort of 160-5. In the hammer throw, Rebuck was third (163-9) and Dart was fifth (161-11). KU's men won five events. Steve Hixson (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) was a double winner, taking the 200-meter dash in 22.90 and the 400 in 50.26. Chris Boutsikaris (so. Andover, N.J./Newtown) won the javelin (182-1) and Brian Collier (fr. Norristown/Norristown) won the triple jump (43-8). Rounding out the firsts was the 400 relay team of Devin Peterson (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown), Michael Kramer (fr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove), Kendel Dixon (so. Atglen/Octorara) and Justin Gibbs (sr. Pottstown/Pottstown), which ran a time of 42.87. Kramer finished second in the 100 dash (11.25), while Peterson was fourth (11.27). Peterson also was third in the long jump (20-6 1/4). Joe Tavormina (fr. Hellertown/Saucon Valley) finished second in the 400 (50.87), and Kevin Rodgers (fr. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby) was fourth in the 5,000 (16:00.45). Vonkurt Redley (sr. Philadelphia/Cheltenham) was second in the 110 hurdles (15.37), T.J. Longmore (so. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) was fifth (15.75) and Gibbs was sixth (15.88). Redley also was fourth in the 400 hurdles (55.63), while Jason Rowles (so. Broomall/Marple Newtown) was sixth (55.87). Steve Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) took third in the shot put (51-6 1/4), while Cody Hartzler (jr. Belleville/Indian Valley) was second in the high jump (6-2 1/4). In the javelin, Matt Kaminsky (fr. Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) was third (176-4) and Brian Ford (sr. Harleysville/North Penn) was fourth (174-0). Dewey Shappell (jr. Oley Valley/Oley Valley) was sixth in the triple jump (36-4 3/4). The 1,600 relay team of Shaun Crump (so. Boyertown/Boyertown), Ben Loht (so. Lewistown/Indian Valley), Matt Reightler (fr. Bethlehem/Northampton) and Mahmond Aldeen (fr. East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) finished second (3:31.70).
