Dave Ben, men's basketball
(jr. Coatesville/Coatesville)

        Dave Ben, of the men's basketball, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the week. Ben scored a career-high 32 points in a comeback win against East Stroudsburg and had another 16 points, including the game-deciding 3-pointer with 1:05 left, in a comeback win against West Chester.

      SAT 2/9 - Barton 10, Kutztown 7; Barton 11, Kutztown 8 - KU opened up its season dropping two games in a doubleheader against Barton College in Wilson, N.C. Barton won 10-7 in the first game and 11-8 in the second. Chad Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) and Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) highlighted KU's offense, each going 4-for-9 in the doubleheader. Lightcap had three homers, six RBIs and three runs scored, while Kacelowicz also had a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored. In the second game, Jared Frey (fr. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) went 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
      SUN 2/10 - Barton 11, Kutztown 6; Barton 4, Kutztown 2 - KU lost 11-6 and 4-2 to Barton in their second straight doubleheader to start the 2008 season. Matt Kulbacki (so. Hershey/Hershey) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Lightcap went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. In the second game, Mark Renda (r-fr. Lansdale/North Penn) had a 2-for-3 showing at the plate with and RBI.

Last Week's Action
      SAT 2/9 - KU 2-1 at USC-Aiken Tournament - KU opened its season with two wins at the USC-Aiken Tournament in Aiken, S.C., defeating No. 3 Columbus State 4-2 and UNC-Pembroke 4-3. Augusta State won 3-2 in the Golden Bears' only loss of the tournament. Against UNC-Pembroke, Katlin Arbogast (so. Ambler/Wissahickon) struck out 10 batters in a complete-game win Saturday. Arbogast allowed three runs on six hits in her seven innings of work. Kim Morrison (jr. Newmarket, ONTARIO/Sir William Mulock), who finished 2-for-3, hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give KU the early 2-0 lead. She also had a double in the game. Ashley Fitzgerald (jr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) went 1-for-2 for KU with a walk. Against Augusta, Krista Cameron (jr. Formosa, ONTARIO/Sacred Heart) had a double for KU, which went up 2-0 in the top of the fourth, but Augusta struck out 13 Golden Bears to squeak out the one-run win. Fitzgerald led KU against Columbus State, going 3-for-3, with a homer and double. Her solo homer in the third gave KU a 3-0 lead. Kathy Gregg (sr. Narvon/Garden Spot) also an RBI in the game, and Cameron had a double. Monica Glomb (fr. Mars/Mars) pitched a complete game for the Golden Bears, striking held Columbus State to only four hits and two walks in the game
      SUN 2/10 - KU 2-0 at USC-Aiken Tournament - KU won both its contests in the second day of the USC-Aiken Tournament, defeating No. 23 Georgia College and State University 4-2 and the host squad, USC-Aiken, 3-1. Fitzgerald, against GCSU, doubled in two runs in the first inning, and in the second inning, Maria Schiavo (so. Old Forge/Old Forge) roped a two-run single to make it 4-0. The four runs were all that Glomb needed, as she picked up her second victory in the tournament. Glomb went the distance, allowing seven hits and two earned runs while striking out five. Arbogast picked up her second win in KU's victory over USC-Aiken, pitching in relief of freshman Maggie Reifsnyder (fr. Philadelphia/Littleflower). In her first collegiate action, Reifsnyder went 1.1 innings, while allowing one earned run on three hits. She walked one and struck out two. Arbogast entered the game with one out in the second inning and was lights out, fanning 11 batters in 5.2 innings of work. Cameron drove in the first run of the game in the first inning with a triple, giving the Golden Bears the 1-0 lead.
