Ashley Fitzgerald, softball
(jr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection)
Ashley Fitzgerald, of the softball team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the week. Fitzgerald led the Golden Bears to eight wins during spring break, batting .467 (14-for-30) with four home runs, three doubles, 11 RBIs and nine runs scored. Her slugging percentage in KU's eight straight wins last week was .967.

SAT-SUN 3/8-3/9 - at Savannah Invitational
MON 3/10 - Concord 8, KU 5 - Concord (W.Va.) University used a pair of four-run innings to come from behind and defeat KU. Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) was 3-for-5 with a pair of stolen bases. Matt Kulbacki (so. Hershey/Hershey) was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Michael Dugan (r-fr. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) was 1-for-1 and drew three walks. Chad Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) tied an NCAA Division II record by being hit by a pitch four times.
TUE 3/11 - KU 16, Fairmont State 7 - Corey Buletza (fr. St. Clair/Pottsville), Brett Wigder (fr. Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) and Dugan led the Golden Bears with a combined nine RBIs in a win over Fairmont State. Widger led the pack with four RBIs, while going 3-for-4 at the plate. Buletza went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, while Dugan was 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs and a solo home run. Garrison Rausch (sr. Allentown/Parkland) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Steve Craig (jr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) struck out nine over 6.2 innings of work.
TUE 3/11 - Armstrong Atlantic 5, KU 2 - KU was forced to go to its bullpen early and Armstrong Atlantic State University took advantage, handing the Golden Bears a loss. After Dugan, who went 3-for-3, hit a game-tying RBI double in the top of the fourth, Kulbacki cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the eighth with an RBI single. Mark Renda (r-fr. Lansdale/North Penn) went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
THU 3/13 - California (Pa.) 14, KU 10 - KU took an 8-3 lead, but couldn't hold on as California (Pa.) rallied back for a four-run win. Lightcap went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Nole Saylor (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) finished 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Both Kulbacki and Renda went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Rausch started for the Golden Bears and struck out nine.
FRI 3/14 - KU 4, California (Pa.) 3 - Darin Gorski (so. Mount Joy/Donegal) pitched Golden Bears coach Chris Blum into the record books, striking out 10 and holding California (Pa.) to three runs in Blum's 200th career win at KU. In the bottom of the eighth, Dugan singled home Rausch, who reached on a one-out single. Kacelowicz provided some of the early offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
FRI 3/14 - KU 3, Fairmont State 2 (10 inn.) - The Golden Bears needed extra innings, but Kulbacki drove in Jeff Kistle (r-fr. Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny) with a two-out single in the bottom of the 10th to give the Golden Bears the win. Kistle reached on a one-out single and advanced into scoring position after a sacrifice. Rausch was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Renda was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

MON 3/10 - KU 5, Armstrong Atlantic 0; KU 7, Armstrong Atlanticc 4 - Ashley Fitzgerald (jr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) and Maria Schiavo (so. Old Forge/Old Forge) each had four hits Monday as KU swept a doubleheader at Armstrong Atlantic. Schiavo's two-run single in the top of the second gave KU a 2-0 lead in the first game, and the Golden Bears added single tallies in the third, fifth and sixth innings. Kathy Gregg (sr. Narvon/Garden Spot) went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Fitzgerald, Kim Morrison (jr. Newmarket, ONTARIO/Sir William Mulock), Steph Denlinger (jr. Harleysville/Souderton) and Sam Flowers (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) went 2-for-4. Katlin Arbogast (so. Ambler/Wissahickon) struck out six batters in the second game of the doubleheader. Arbogast pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits. Morrison, Fitzgerald, Cameron and Gregg all finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
TUE-THU 3/11-3/14 - at SCAD Spring Break Smash Hit (Savannah, Ga.)
TUE 3/11 - KU 8, Chowan 3 - Denlinger hit two home runs and had five RBIs as the Golden Bears defeated Chowan University. Denlinger went 3-for-4 at the plate, with two two-run homers and an RBI single. Fitzgerald also had a home run. Krista Tedjeske (fr. Summerhill/Forest Hills) and Gregg, who was 2-for-2, also had RBI singles. Schiavo finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
TUE 3/11 - KU 4, West Liberty State 1 - The Golden Bears used three unearned runs in a three-run third inning to defeat West Liberty State. Arbogast allowed one run on four hits and two walks in seven innings of work. She finished with 10 strikeouts. Fitzgerald had a double and a run scored. Cameron and Tedjeske each had RBI singles, and Denlinger had an RBI double.
WED 3/12 - KU 6, Chowan 3 - Solid pitching from Monica Glomb (fr. Mars/Mars) and a pair two-run homers helped the Golden Bears to defeat Chowan University. Gregg and Tedjeske both smacked two-run homers for the Golden Bears. Schiavo had an RBI triple, scored on an error and finished 2-for-4. Glomb had her best day as Golden Bear, striking out eight and holding Chowan to three runs. Cameron also scored a run for KU, while going 2-for-4 at the plate.
WED 3/12 - KU 8, West Liberty State 0 (6 inn.) - Arbogast set the KU career strikeout record in the Golden Bears' win over West Liberty State. Arbogast fanned seven batters over six innings of the mercy-rule shortened contest. Only in her second year at KU, she now has 384 strikeouts. She allowed just two hits and one walk for her ninth victory of the season. Fitzgerald and Cameron provided the bulk of the offense for KU. Both players went 3-for-4 with Fitzgerald driving in three runs and scoring twice. Cameron had an RBI and a run scored. Denlinger finished 1-for-2, with a double, two walks and two runs scored. Anne Arbogast (so. Ambler/Wissahickon) had a two-RBI double.
THU 3/13 - KU 10, Pikeville College 1 (6 inn.) - Fitzgerald hit two home runs as the Golden Bears routed Pikeville College. Denlinger and Fitzgerald had back-to-back homers. Cameron also homered for the Golden Bears, taking part in another back-to-back home run sequence in the third. Her one-out homer was followed by Fitzgerald's solo shot. Morrison went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Mary Hoch (fr. Somerton/St.Hubert) had six strikeouts over six innings of work to pick up the win. She allowed just one run on five hits.
THU 3/13 - KU 10, St. Francis (Ind.) 2 (5 inn.) - The Golden Bears scored seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take care of St. Francis (Ind.). Fitzgerald led KU going 2-for-3, including her three-run home run in the bottom of the first. Katlin Arbogast struck out eight batters over four innings of work, while allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. She is now 10-2 on the mound this season. Gregg had a two-run homer. Alex Najpauer (fr. Topton/Brandywine Heights) was 2-for-4 with a two-RBI single. Denlinger walked three times and scored two runs. Cameron and Angela Domenici (fr. Kunkletown/Pleasant Valley) each finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

FRI-SAT 3/14-3/15 - at the Coastal Carolina Invitational - Justin Germani (fr. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone), Keri Brown (fr. Southampton, N.J./Seneca) and Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) each led the KU men's and women's outdoor track and field team with second-place finishes at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. In the opening event for the outdoor season, Germani took second in the men's pole vault, clearing 15-7. On the women's side, Brown placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.45, while Williams was second in the 10,000 with a 38:54.81. In the field events, Rebekah Leitzel (fr. Spring Mills/Penns Valley) placed fourth in the javelin (127-11), and Ashley Pinter (fr. Bethlehem/Liberty) took fourth in the hammer throw (159-4). Kelly Strickland (so. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) was fifth in the pole vault (10-6), while Alison Wise (so. Denver/Garden Spot) was eighth (9-6 1/4). Katie Colburn (fr. Hanover/South Western) finished eighth in the 400 IM hurdles (1:06.93). Doofan Tor-Agbidye (jr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) also placed eighth, finishing the 200 in 25.66 seconds. The 1,600 relay was fifth (4:05.29), while the 400 relay team finished eighth (49.78). On the men's side, the 1,600 relay was sixth (3:23.72). Vonkurt Redley (sr. Philadelphia/Cheltenham) placed in two events for the Golden Bears, taking fourth in the 400 hurdles (55.40) and sixth in the 110 high hurdles (15.06). Shane Harvey (fr. Potterburg, N.J./North Hunterdon) also placed in both events, with a fifth-place finish in the 400 hurdles (55.45) an eighth-place finish in the 110 hurdles (15.25). Billy Boorse (sr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) was seventh in the 800 (1:56.54). In the field, Chris Boutsikaris (so. Andover, N.J./Newtown) placed sixth in the javelin (177-8) and eighth in the hammer (168-0 1/2). Matt Kaminsky (fr. Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) was seventh in the javelin (176-4). Tim Ohm (so. Media/Penncrest) took sixth in the pole vault with a jump of 13-7.

MON-SAT 3/10-3/15 - at Hilton Head Invitational
MON 3/10 - Southern Indiana 7, KU 2 - KU picked up its two team points at first doubles and sixth singles in a loss to Southern Indiana. Lukas Labitsch (jr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) and Andrew Torrealba (so. Pembrek Pines, Fla./Chales Franasan) won 8-3 at first doubles. At sixth singles, Gregg Shankle (so. Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) was a winner in three sets, 4-6, 7-6 and 1-0 in the third-set super-tiebreaker. Arpit Sharma (so. Kolkata, INDIA) lost a tough three-set decision at second singles.
TUE 3/11 - Byrant 5, KU 4 - Bryant University won four of the six singles matches to hand KU. Labitsch and Torrealba were the only Golden Bears to collect wins - both in third-set super tiebreakers - in the singles matches. Labitsch won 7-6, 2-6 (10-6) in the No. 1 singles match, while Torrealba won 6-3, 1-6 (10-8) in the No. 3 single match. Both Labitsch and Torrealba teamed up to win in the No. 1 doubles match. KU's other win came in the No. 2 doubles match, where Sharma and Robert Zerwick (fr. Bowers/Kutztown) won 9-8.
THU 3/13 - Armstrong Atlantic 9, KU 0 - KU was swept in both the singles and doubles matches in a loss to Armstrong Atlantic.
SAT 3/15 - Northern Georgia 6, KU 3 - KU fell in its final contest at the Hilton Head Invitational losing 6-3 to Northern Georgia. Labitsch was the only Golden Bear to pick up two wins Saturday as he won his singles match and teamed with Torrealba to win their doubles match 8-4. Labitsch won 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles. Sharma also picked up a win for KU, winning 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match.

MON-SAT 3/10-3/15 - at Hilton Head Invitational
MON 3/10 - KU 5, Clarion 4 - KU defeated PSAC foe Clarion 5-4 to pick up its first win of the season. The Golden Bears won two of three doubles points and then split the six singles matches to hold on for the win. Rohini Das (so. Kolkata, INDIA) and Barbara Joerns (so. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) won at first doubles, 8-2, while Sabrina Arnaud (so. Quebec, QUEBEC/Levy Laurzon) and Kristen Struble (fr. East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) won at third doubles, 8-1. In singles, Joerns, Arnaud and Struble all won in straight sets at second-through-fourth singles, respectively, to secure the win. Joerns won 6-0, 6-1. Arnaud blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Struble won 6-0 and 7-6.
WED 3/12 - KU 5, Upper Iowa 4 - KU won four of the six singles matches to edge out Upper Iowa University. Arnaud and Struble made the difference for the Golden Bears combining to win their doubles match, as well as their respective singles matches. Arnaud won 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles match, while Struble won 6-2, 7-6 in the No. 5 singles. Together, in the No. 3 doubles match, Arnaud and Struble won 9-8. Joerns won her No. 1 singles match, 6-4, 6-1, while Das, at the No. 2 singles match, won 6-4, 6-2.
THU 3/13 - Armstrong Atlantic 9, Kutztown 0 - KU was swept in both the singles and doubles matches, falling to Armstrong Atlantic.
SAT 3/15 - Northern Georgia 5, KU 4 - KU fell a match short of closing out the Hilton Head Invitational with a win, dropping a 5-4 decision to Northern Georgia. KU picked up all its wins in the singles matches by Das, Joerns, Struble and Arnaud. Joerns won in the No. 1 singles match, 7-5, 6-2, while Das won 6-0, 6-2. At the No. 3 singles, Arnaud won 6-1, 6-1, and at No. 5 singles, Struble won 2-6, 7-5 (1-0).
