Athlete of the Week
Bret Wade - Wrestling
(jr. Phoenixville/Phoenixville)
Bret Wade, of the wrestling team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Wade battled several Division I wrestlers en route to a second-place finish in the 184 pound weight class at the Penn State Open. Wade picked up victories over grapplers from Penn State, Duquesne, Maryland and Rutgers before losing in the finals to a wrestler from Rider.

MON 11/29 - KU 83, SHEPHERD 71 - Frank Moultrie (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) scored 20 points and handed out six assists as Kutztown handled Shepherd, 83-71, at Keystone Arena. Moultrie finished the game 7-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-11 on threes. Bilal Salaam (sr. Wilmington, DE/Howard) also had a big night, scoring 14 points, grabbing 13 boards and blocking six shots. He went 6-of-12 from the field, as did Ty Brickus (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) who finished with 13 points and five assists. Vince Pease (sr. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) came off the bench to score 10 points, making 4-of-6 shots. Kutztown shot 33-of-64 for 52 percent. Kutztown led by as many as seven in the first half and entered the intermission leading by four, 41-37. Brickus led the Golden Bears with 11 of his 13 in the half on 5-of-9 shooting. The Golden Bears opened the second half with a 15-2 run, fueled by six points each from Salaam and Moultrie, to build the lead to 56-39 with 15:15 to play.
WED 12/1 - KU 85, PSU-Berks 50 - KU took a 17-2 lead minutes into the first half and never looked back in its 85-50 non-league win at Penn State-Berks. Salaam scored 19 points and grabbed six boards with six blocked shots to lead KU. Bobby Eberhart (sr. Lancaster/McCaskey) scored 16 points, while Ryan Eisenhart (so. York/Spring Grove) scored 11. Eberhart added four rebounds and five assists, while Eisenhart chipped in with four assists and three steals. The trio of Salaam, Eberhart and Eisenhart combined for KU's first 17 points as the Bears took control early with a 17-2 lead at the 14:05 mark. PSU-Berks closed to within eight, 17-9, two minutes later, but Salaam hit a jumper to break the run. KU led 42-17 at halftime and led by as many as 38 in the second half. Terrance Davis (so. Philadelphia/Scotland School) scored nine points for KU, hitting a pair of three pointers. Brickus scored eight.
SAT 12/4 - KU 64, CALIFORNIA (PA) 57 - Kutztown held California (PA) to just 29 percent shooting to capture a 64-57 PSAC Crossover win at Keystone Arena. Ben Arnold (jr. Philadlephia/Christian Academy) and Eberhart each scored 14 to lead KU. Arnold also grabbed 13 rebounds and hit 6-of-12 shots from the field. Salaam had a game-high 14 rebounds, six blocks and 12 points. Brickus added 11 points. Kutztown won despite shooting just 35 percent from the field and hitting just 2-of-21 threes. The Golden Bear defense held Cal to just 22-of-75 shooting (29 percent) and limited the Vulcans to 1-of-12 from downtown. The Golden Bears never trailed in the contest. Kutztown led by as many as seven in the first half, but held just a 30-29 advantage at halftime. Salaam and Brickus scored seven each in the opening 20 minutes. KU used a 10-2 run in the second half to build its largest lead, 46-36, with 12:11 to play. Eberhart had seven points during the stretch.
SUN 12/5 - KU 80, SHIPPENSBURG 58 - The Golden Bears matched their best start in over 40 years, dismantling Shippensburg, 80-58, in a PSAC Crossover match-up at Keystone Arena. With the 7-1 start to the 2004-05 season, KU matches its best opening eight games since the 1961-62 team started 7-1 as well. The win was also KU's sixth in a row. Kutztown led by just two with 13 minutes to play, before breaking the game wide open with a 27-4 run. Moultrie had 10 of his team-high 18 points during the run. Four other Golden Bears joined Moultrie in double figures. Salaam scored 16, hitting 6-of-7 shots and grabbed eight rebounds. Eberhart netted 15 points, Brickus added 12 and Arnold had 11. Arnold turned in a double-double, snagging 11 boards. KU trailed by four, 37-33 at the half. Shooting and turnovers were the difference in the second half. Kutztown shot 15-of-31 in the second half, including 8-of-17 on threes, and turned the ball over just four times. Shippensburg, meanwhile, connected on just 8-of-30 second half field goals and committed 10 turnovers.

MON 11/29 - Holy Family 60, KU 51 - The Golden Bears went a perfect 19-of-19 from the foul line, but it was not enough as Holy Family handed KU a 60-51 loss. The perfect evening from the stripe set a new school record, besting a 15-of-15 performance against Mansfield in 1999. Megan Bainbridge (so. Minersville/Nativity BVM) was the only Golden Bear in double figures with 15 points, including 1-of-1 from the line. Rachel Weidensaul (fr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) and Jackie Daley (so. Havertown/Haverford) each went 6-of-6 from the line. Weidensaul finished with eight points. Trish Dudeck (jr. Shamokin/Shamokin) made all four of her free throws, while Jess Brady (so. Emmaus/Emmaus) was 2-of-2. Kutztown's shooting from the field was ice cold, hitting just 5-of-24 shots in the first half (21 percent). A 13-0 Holy Family run gave the Lady Tigers a 34-28 lead at the break. HFC shot just 9-of-30 in the half and finished the game at 37 percent. The Golden Bears hit 10-of-16 second half shots (63 percent) and ended the contest at 38 percent. Bainbridge scored 10 of her 15 in the second half.
WED 12/1 - KU 66, PSU-Berks 50 - KU broke open a close game with a strong second-half defensive effort in a 66-50 win over Penn State-Berks. Three players led a balanced Golden Bear scoring attack with nine points each. Mercedes Van Wagner (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional), Dudeck and Brooke Martin (sr. Lock Haven/Central Mountain) each netted nine points. Van Wagner led the team with 10 rebounds, while Dudeck added six boards. Bainbridge dished out five assists and had three steals. KU led 31-25 at halftime, and held a slim one point lead, 33-32, with just over 18:00 to play in the game. The Bears, however, took control with a 14-0 run over the next six minutes. Five players scored in the stretch. The run was part of an eight-minute defensive stand in which the Golden Bears held PSU-Berks without a field goal.
SAT 12/4 - CALIFORNIA (PA) 59, KU 34 - Four Vulcan players scored in double figures to lead California (PA) to a 59-34 win over Kutztown in a PSAC crossover contest at Keystone Hall. Brady scored 12 points for the Golden Bears, while Daley added nine points and seven rebounds. Kutztown shot just 21.3% from the floor in the game (10-47) and turned the ball over 31 times. Cal controlled the beginning of each half, holding KU scoreless for the first seven minutes of the first half and first six minutes of the second.
SUN 12/5 - SHIPPENSBURG 62, KU 48 - The Golden Bears turned in a strong defensive performance, but it was not enough as Shippensburg exited Keystone Arena with a 62-48 PSAC Crossover win. Kutztown held the Lady Raiders to just 32 percent shooting. Shippensburg's top three scorers combined to hit just 11-of-43 shots. Van Wagner led KU with 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Monique Boykins (jr. Yeadon/Penn Wood) grabbed nine rebounds and blocked four shots. Brady had eight rebounds. As a team, the Golden Bears shot just 35 percent. Kutztown held a 16-14 lead with 6:02 to play in the first half, before the Lady Raiders closed the half with a 10-3 run to enter the break with a 24-19 edge. In the second half, Kutztown kept the game close and trailed by just two, 37-35, after a Van Wagner free throw with 10:03 to play. Shippensburg then went on a 12-4 run to seal the game. The Golden Bears were outrebounded 52-to-40 in the contest and hit just 4-of-11 free throws. The team did, however, connect on 4-of-8 threes.

FRI 12/3 - SUN 12/5 - at Indiana (PA) Invitational (2nd/5) - Aaron Clark (so. Galena, MD/Kent County) won the 100 back (54.63) and took second in the 200 back (1:59.18) as KU finished second at the Indiana (PA) Invitational. Dan Pfost (jr. Kutztown/Kutztown) finished second in the 200 fly (2:01.15) and picked up a pair of thirds in the 100 back (56.76) and 400 IM (4:27.32). Brad Borek (sr. Southampton/William Tennent) touched the wall in 1:01.90 for second place in the 100 breast. Greg Fulkerson (sr. Towanda/Towanda) was second in the 100 free (49.91) and third in the 200 free (1:49.51). The Golden Bears finished second in all four relays. Scott Arnold (fr. York/Northeastern), Will Huber (fr. Mechanicsville/Central Bucks East), Ed Keglovits (sr. Kutztown/Kutztown) and Borek swam a 1:30.95 in the 200 free relay. Clark, Borek, Pfost and Fulkerson combined for a 3:42.91 in the 400 medley relay. In the 200 medley relay, Clark, Steve McNeely (so. Glenolden/Monsignor Bonner), Arnold and Borek teamed for a time of 1:41.78. The foursome of Dan Schoor (fr. Warminster/Central Bucks East), Keglovits, Borek and Fulkerson swam a 3:20.30 in the 400 free relay. IUP defended it home pool with 866 points, with KU finishing second with 802.

FRI 12/3 - SUN 12/5 - at Indiana (PA) Invitational (2nd/7) - Kutztown won a pair of relays as the Golden Bears placed second at the Indiana (PA) Invitational. In the 200 medley relay, Nikki Cattell (fr. Warminster/William Tennent), Meghan Fenningham (jr. Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy), Ashley Singer (fr. Lititz/Warwick) and Kelly Rowan (so. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby) teamed for a winning time of 1:53.18. Kutztown also won the 800 free relay, with Staci McGinty (fr. Jamison/Central Bucks East), Katie Hinnershitz (fr. Temple/Muhlenberg), Melissa Porter (sr. Wallingford/Strath Haven) and Singer combining for an 8:06.50. Singer was KU's only individual winner at the meet, taking the 200 fly in 2:15.15. She also placed second in both the 100 fly (59.95) and 100 free (54.30) and was third in the 200 IM (2:16.96). Rowan finished third in the 50 free with an NCAA B qualifying time of 25.00. She added two more third place finishes in the 100 breast (1:09.20) and 100 free (54.89). McGinty notched a 2:00.91 to finish second in the 200 free. Fenningham was second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.48. The Golden Bears finished second in two other relays. In the 400 medley relay, Colleen Brady (jr. Harleysville/St. Pius X), Fenningham, Singer and Rowan swam a 4:06.61. Singer, McGinty, Hinnershitz and Rowan teamed for a second finish in the 400 free relay (3:42.14), as well. Brady took third in the 400 IM (5:02.52) and 200 back (2:18.15). KU had 643 points, trailing only IUP's winning total of 727.

SAT 12/4 - at Bucknell Opener (no scoring)
Men: The men's indoor track team opened its season in action at the unscored Bucknell Opener. The Golden Bears posted strong performances in the 400m and shot put. Dave Bartolomucci (sr. Exeter/Exeter) and Tony Hegedus (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) finished first and third in the 400, respectively. Bartolomucci posted the winning time of 49.70, with Hegedus finishing in 50.53. Newcomer Steve Tyson (fr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) picked up a win in the shot put with a heave of 51-6, while Chris Feighner (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) placed fourth with a mark of 46-1. Tyson was also seventh in the 35-lb. weight (41-7 3/4). Billy Boorse (so. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) finished second in the 800m with a time of 1:59.59, and teamed with Hegedus, Bartolomucci and Steve Hixson (fr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) to take second in the 4x400m relay (3:21.92). Mike Provenzano (jr. Carlisle/Carlisle) cleared 14-9 to take fifth in the pole vault. In the 60m hurdles, Vonkurt Redley (fr. Elkins Park/Cheltenham) placed fifth with a time of 8.62. Kareef Wallace (so. Coatesville/Coatesville) turned in a sixth place in the 60m (7.00) and finished eighth in the 200m (23.16).
Women: The KU women also opened at the Bucknell Opener. Chrissy Procopio (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) led the Golden Bears with a second place throw in the 20-lb. weight of 51-1. Renee Marchand (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) tied for third by clearing 5-1 in the high jump. The foursome of Janelle Kostishion (sr. Hilltown/Pennridge), Sara Otis (sr. Wyalusing/Wyalusing Valley), Laura Kline (jr. Reading/Reading) and Jaci Pfeiffer (jr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) finished fifth in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:05.26. Kline also finished seventh in the 400m (60.41), while Pfeiffer was eighth in the 60m hurdles (9.41). Amie Bennett (sr. Sinking Spring/Wilson) joined Pfeiffer in the 60m hurdles, placing seventh (9.39). Steph Sukal (sr. New Tripoli/Northwestern Lehigh) picked up a seventh place finish as well, topping 10-4 in the pole vault.

SUN 12/5 - Penn State Open (no team scores) - Bret Wade (jr. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) finished second at 184 as KU competed against Division I competition at the Penn State Open. Wade defeated four straight D-I grapplers before dropping a decision in the finals. The Golden Bears only other placewinner was Ryan Wasser (jr. Northampton/Northampton), who placed eighth at 174. Wasser won four of his six matches on the afternoon. Steve Bush (fr. Exeter/Exeter) finished with a winning record of 3-2 at 197, but did not place.
