Ashley Singer - W Swimming
(fr. Lititz/Warwick)
Ashley Singer, of the women's swimming team, repeats as this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Singer won two individual events and swam on four victorious relays to lead the KU women to a first-place finish at the Golden Bear Invitational. Singer was first in the 100 fly (1:00.50) and 200 fly (2:13.75) and was a member of the winning 200 free, 400 medley, 200 medley and 400 free relays.

MON 11/15 - KU 92, COLUMBIA UNION 78 - Bobby Eberhart (sr. Lancaster/McCaskey) and Frank Moultrie (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) combined for 53 points to lead Kutztown to the season-opening win over Columbia Union at Keystone Arena. Eberhart led all players with 28 points, hitting 11-of-16 field goals. Moultrie scored 25 points, tying a KU single-game record with seven three pointers. Dorian Sims (so. Reading/Central Catholic) scored 15 points and dished out nine assists in his debut with the Golden Bears. Bilal Salaam (sr. Wilmington, DE/Howard) scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked six shots. KU had to fight off the pesky Pioneers throughout the contest. Kutztown build a 12-pont lead with 13:59 remaining in the game on a layup by Eberhart. The Pioneers, however, would not quit. CUC climbed to within four, 75-71 with 5:19 to play, but then Eberhart took over. He scored nine points in the final five minutes to seal the win.
FRI 11/19 - HOLY FAMILY 89, KU 88 - Holy Family hit a free throw with no time left in the game to defeat Kutztown, 89-88. The Tigers were fouled while scoring the game-tying basket at the buzzer. Sims led the Golden Bears with 16 points and was 3-of-4 from three-point range. Salaam scored 15 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked eight shots. Eberhart notched 15 in the loss, with Ben Arnold (jr. Philadelphia/Christian Academy) and Vince Pease (sr. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) scoring 14 each. Arnold had eight boards, while Pease finished 5-of-6 from the field. Free throw shooting proved to be the difference in the contest. The Tigers hit 18-of-25 from the line, while the Golden Bears knocked down just 16 of their 34 attempts.
SAT 11/20 - KU 90, WEST VIRGINIA STATE 86 - Kutztown overcame a 22-point second-half deficit to pull out a 90-86 victory over West Virginia State in the final game of the KU Classic sponsored by Sheraton-Reading/AFBE at Keystone Hall. Kutztown outscored the Yellow Jackets 40-14 over the final 10:30 to erase a 72-50 deficit. Moultrie scored 13 of his 20 points during the comeback, while Eberhart netted eight of his team-high 21. Salaam scored eight points during the flourish, including a dunk that capped an 11-0 stretch for KU and another slam that put the Bears ahead for good, 84-83, with 1:05 left. It was Salaam's final scoring of the game, giving him 999 points for his career. He had 15 points in the game, to go with nine rebounds and eight blocks. KU, which has struggled from the free throw line in its first two games, connected on 4-of-6 foul shots after taking the lead in the final minute. For the game, KU was 16-of-21. Ty Brickus (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 11 points and grabbed six boards, while Pease added 10 points. Salaam and Eberhart were named to the Sheraton-Reading/AFBE KU Classic All-Tournament team.

MON 11/15 - KU 73, COLUMBIA UNION 57 - Mercedes Van Wagner (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) and Rachel Weidensaul (fr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) had stellar debuts for Kutztown in the Golden Bears' 73-57 season-opening win over Columbia Union. Van Wagner led Kutztown with 16 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots. She was 7-of-12 from the field. Weidensaul scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. Jackie Daley (so. Havertown/Haverford) added 14 points, hitting 5-of-8 shots and 4-of-4 free throws. Megan Bainbridge (so. Minersville/Nativity BVM) scored eight points, grabbed seven boards and dished out five assists. KU led by as many as 13 points in the first half. CUC pulled to within seven points, 44-37, midway through the second period, but a 13-0 run sealed the win. Four players scored during the stretch, including six points by Weidensual.
FRI 11/19 - SALEM INTERNATIONAL 82, KU 78 (OT) - Kutztown erased a 10-point deficit in the final 4:30 of regulation, but Salem International came away with an 82-78 overtime victory in the KU Classic. Golden Bears' freshman Katie Harlor (fr. Danville/Danville) made a three-pointer - her only field goal of the game - with two seconds left to send the teams to overtime. For Kutztown, Monique Boykins (jr. Yeardon/Penn Wood) and Van Wagner each had double-doubles as KU controlled the paint. Boykins had 19 points and 12 boards, while Van Wagner added 16 points and 12 rebounds. Bainbridge also had a double-double, with 11 points and 10 assists. Weidensaul chipped in with 10 points, while Trish Dudeck (jr. Shamokin/Shamokin) came off the bench for eight boards. SAT 11/20 - KU 69, NJIT 68 - Daley made a layup with one second left in overtime to lift the Golden Bears to a 69-68 win over New Jersey Tech at the KU Classic. Weidensaul led KU with 15 points in the win, while Dudeck added 11 points and eight boards. Van Wagner had seven rebounds. The Golden Bears shot 53 percent from the floor (21-of-40). They shot 62 percent in the second half, as Kutztown erased an 11-point NJIT lead. KU battled back to tie the game at 52-52 on a pair of Bainbridge free throws. Kutztown led 59-58 with 41 seconds left in regulation when the Highlanders hit one of two free throws to send the game to overtime. In the overtime, NJIT took a 67-63 advantage with 2:05 left. Daley, who scored five of her seven points in the overtime, tied the contest at 67-67 with a pair of free throws with just 22 seconds left. The Highlanders were fouled on their next possession and hit one of two for a one-point lead with nine seconds to play. After a timeout, KU had an inbounds play along the baseline. Brooke Martin (sr. Lock Haven/Central Mountain) sent a bounce pass to the open Daley who hit the layup for the win. After the game, Weidensaul was named to the All-Tournament team.

FRI 11/19-SAT 11/20 - GOLDEN BEAR INVITATIONAL - 1st/5 - The Kutztown men's swim team defended its home pool with a win in the five-team Golden Bear Invitational. Kutztown tallied 665 points to edge out second place Indiana (PA), who had 620. Dan Pfost (jr. Kutztown/Kutztown) was the only individual event winner for KU, winning the 200 fly in 2:04.49. The Golden Bears also picked up wins in the 200 free relay and 800 free relay. In the 200, Rich Reshetar (so. Point Pleasant/Central Bucks East), Brad Borek (sr. Southampton/William Tennent), Ed Keglovits (Kutztown/Kutztown) and Scott Arnold (fr. York/Northeastern) teamed up for a 1:30.92. Sean Bonifas (fr. Lancaster/Hempfield), William Huber (fr. Mechanicsville/Central Bucks East), Dan Schoor (fr. Warminster/Central Bucks East) and Reshetar combined for the winning time of 7:37.01 in the 800.

FRI 11/19-SAT 11/20 - GOLDEN BEAR INVITATIONAL - 1st/6 - KU eaked out an eight-point win in the six-team Golden Bear Invitational. Kutztown's 581 points narrowly defeated second-place IUP. Ashley Singer (fr. Lititz/Warwick) won both the 100 and 200 fly at the meet. She swam a 1:00.50 to win the 100, with her 2:13.75 taking the win in the 200. Kelly Rowan (so. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby) touched the wall first in the 100 breast with her time of 1:09.72. The Golden Bears won all five relays. Staci McGinty (fr. Jamison/Central Bucks East), Jill Pantelides (fr. Lansdowne/Archbishop Pendergast), Katie Hinnershitz (fr. Temple/Temple) and Rowan teamed up for a win in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:43.63. In the 800 free relay, McGinty, DeLorean Reese (jr. Glenville/Southwestern), Melissa Porter (sr. Wallingford/Strath Haven) and Singer won with an 8:13.46. Nikki Cattell (fr. Warminster/William Tennent), Meghan Fenningham (jr. Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy), Singer and Rowan posted a 1:54.68 to win the 200 medley relay. Singer, McGinty, Hinnershitz and Rowan completed the relay sweep with a 3:41.51 in the 400 free relay.

WED 11/17 - Pitt-Johnstown 25, KU 12 - KU made The #5 team in Division II work for a 25-12 win at Keystone Hall. Trailing just 13-12 after six matches, KU was on the short end of four close decisions in the final four bouts. Winners for KU included Brandon Clemmer (fr. Upper Perkiomen/Upper Perkiomen), who won by decision at 125, Nick Nauroth (so. Quakertown/Quakertown Community), who won by fall at 141, and Kevin Kalbach (so. Downingtown/Downingtown), who won by decision at 165.
SAT 11/20 - KU 60, Baptist Bible 0 - Kutztown picked up a 60-0 win over Baptist Bible in the first match of a tri-match at King's College in Wilkes-Barre. Baptist Bible had only four wrestlers for the match, all of whom lost by fall to Golden Bear wrestlers. Clemmer picked up a pin at 125 in 2:51. At 174, Roy Gecelosky (so. Annville/Palmyra) needed just 0:55 to win his match. Bret Wade (jr. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) scored a pin at 184 in 3:14 and at 285, Andy Freas (so. Wescosville/Emmaus) scored a fall in 6:03.
KU 26, King's 16 - KU completed its sweep at the tri-match with a 26-16 win over the host King's. Clemmer, 125, started the match with his second pin of the day, in 1:14. Vinny Rufo (sr. Wind Gap/Pen Argyl) made it back-to-back pins for the Golden Bears, with a fall in 1:42 in the 133-lb. bout. After King's came back to tie the score at 12-12, Ryan Wasser (jr. Northampton/Northampton) picked up a technical fall at 174 (15-0) to give KU the lead for good. Freas closed the match with his second pin, in 6:31. Wade also went 2-0 on the afternoon, winning his match at 184.
