Alison Maurer - W ID Track & Field

Alison Maurer, of the women's indoor track & field team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Maurer won the 20-lb. Weight throw with an NCAA provisional toss of 53-3 1/4. The mark is the best in the PSAC this season.

MON 2/7 - KU 87, CHEYNEY 83 - Ty Brickus (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) and Bobby Eberhart (sr. Lancaster/McCaskey) poured in 21 points apiece as Kutztown's cardiac kids edged Cheyney, 87-83, at Keystone Hall Monday night. Brickus sank 7-of-14 shots and 4-of-4 free throws, including a pair of charity shots with 13 seconds left to seal the win. Eberhart hit 8-of-13 from the field, including a trio of three pointers in the second half. Bilal Salaam (sr. Wilmington, DE/Howard) scored 17 points with 11 rebounds, six assists and four blocks. Frank Moultrie (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) added 11 points. The game was the fourth in KU's last five decided by four points or less. Down 42-36 at halftime, Kutztown caught fire in the second half. KU shot 56.7% from the field (17-30) after halftime. The Wolves, however, maintained their lead through the first five minutes. KU took its first lead of the half on a trey by Eberhart with 14:13 to play, making it 52-50. CU tied it moments later, and took its final lead on two free throws and a layup with 12:29 to go (55-52). Salaam answered with a three pointer of his own, and Ben Arnold (jr. Philadelphia/Christian Academy) and Eberhart sank baskets to give KU the lead for good with 11 minutes to play. Cheyney got to within one with 2:14 to play, but Salaam hit a free throw, Brickus sank a layup and Eberhart buried a three pointer to make it 83-76 with 1:11 to go. The Wolves weren't done as a three cut the KU lead to just four. After Brickus connected on two free throws, the Wolves hit 4-of-4 free throws to pull within 85-83 with 22 ticks left. Brickus, however, sealed the game with two charity shots with 13 seconds left.
WED 2/9 - Bloomsburg 72, KU 69 - A buzzer beating three-pointer capped an improbable comeback as Bloomsburg upset Kutztown, 72-69, in a PSAC East contest. KU's fifth in six games decided by four or fewer points. The Huskies scored eight points in the final 17 seconds to pull off the win. With Kutztown up 69-64, Bloomsburg converted a three-point play to make it 69-67 with 17 ticks left. After a KU turnover, the Huskies tied it with five seconds left. Another turnover by KU led to the buzzer beater. Five players scored in double figures for KU. Arnold scored 13. Eberhart and Moultrie added 12, while Brickus and Salaam netted 11. Salaam added 11 boards, but KU was out-rebounded 45-26 in the contest. Kutztown connected on just 17-of-32 free throws in the game. Kutztown trailed throughout most of the game. The Golden Bears took their first lead of the contest on a layup by Salaam to make it 55-54 with 6:36 left in the game. Bloomsburg retook the lead, 64-62 with 2:39 to play, but Moultrie sank a three pointer and Salaam hit a jumper to make it 67-64 with 1:31 left. David Moyer (sr. Tullytown/Pennsbury) stretched the lead to 69-64 on a jumper with 26 seconds remaining, before Bloomsburg mounted its comeback.

MON 2/7 - KU 71, CHEYNEY 52 - Rachel Weidensaul (fr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) matched her career high with 18 points as Kutztown downed Cheyney, 71-52, in a PSAC East battle at Keystone Hall. Weidensaul sank 7-of-13 field goals and 4-of-6 free throws for her game-high 18 points. Jess Brady (so. Emmaus/Emmaus) and Monique Boykins (jr. Yeadon/Penn Wood) added 12 points apiece for KU. Boykins controlled the boards with 14 rebounds. Megan Bainbridge (so. Minersville/Nativity) had six assists. Kutztown took control of the game midway through the first half. With the Lady Wolves up 21-20, four Golden Bears scored in a 9-0 run to give Kutztown a 29-21 lead with 5:37 to play. A 19-0 run that spanned the end of the first and beginning of the second halves, put the game out of reach. Kutztown won its 28th consecutive game over the Lady Wolves.
WED 2/9 - Bloomsburg 75, KU 53 - Mercedes Van Wagner (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) led Kutztown with 17 points and eight rebounds, but KU fell to Bloomsburg, 75-53. Brady had 16 points and 10 boards, while Weidensaul scored 11 points. Bainbridge dished out five assists. Bloomsburg used a hot-shooting first half to jump out to a quick lead. BU led by 14 points, 25-11, with 11:45 to play in the first half. The Huskies extended their lead to as many as 26 points before going into the locker room up 49-25. BU shot a blistering 55.9% from the field (19-of-34). KU clamped down on defense in the second half, limiting the Huskies to 25% from the floor (7-28).

SAT 2/12 - PSAC EAST CHALLENGE
Men: (2nd/7) - The Golden Bears finished second as they hosted the PSAC East Challenge at Keystone Field House. Shippensburg won the team title with 192.5 points, with KU finishing second with 136. East Stroudsburg (111.5) was third, followed by Millersville, West Chester, Bloomsburg and Mansfield. KU had the top three finishers in the pole vault and went 1-2 in the 55-meter dash. Mike Provenzano (jr. Carlisle/Carlisle) cleared 15-6 to win the pole vault, followed by teammates Mike Zebert (so. West Chester/Henderson) and Jesse Chew (so. Phoenixville/Phoenixville), respectively. Both athletes vaulted 14-11. Kareef Wallace (so. Coatesville/Coatesville) sprinted a 6.44 to win the 55, and De'Andre Pearson (sr. Norristown/Norristown) took second in the event with a time of 6.58. Tony Hegedus (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) won the 400 with a time of 50.60. In the 500m, Dave Bartolomucci (sr. Exeter/Exeter) had the winning time of 1:05.47. Steve Tyson (fr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) was second in the shot put with a mark of 51-7 1/2. Jim Dart (so. Havertown/Haverford) captured second place in the 35-lb. weight with a mark of 45-7.
Women: (2nd/7) - The Kutztown women came out two points behind Shippensburg for the team title at the PSAC East Challenge. KU tallied 167 points, but the Raiders won with 169. East Stroudsburg was third with 125, followed by Millersville, Bloomsburg, West Chester and Mansfield. The Golden Bears dominated the middle distances, winning the 400-meter dash as well as the 500, 800 and 1,000. Janelle Kostishion (sr. Hilltown/Pennridge) ran a 1:00.77 to win the 400. In the 500, Laura Kline (jr. Reading/Reading) won with a time of 1:20.54. Danielle Mousley (sr. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) turned in a 2:24.86 to take first in the 800. Madonna Patterson (so. Philadelphia/William Penn) won the 1,000 run with her time of 3:06.18. Kline, Renee Marchand (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack), Kostishion and Patterson combined to win the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:06.34. Alison Maurer (jr. Lewisberry/Northern York) and Chrissy Procopio (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) took first and second in the 20-lb. weight. Maurer had the winning throw of 53-3 1/4, while Procopio's 50-11 was second. Kaleena Lockard (sr. Berwick/Berwick) placed second in the shot put with a mark of 41-7 3/4. Jenelle Stoner (jr. Denver/Cocalico) was third with her throw of 39-9 3/4. KU had a pair of second place finishes in the jumps. Amy Schaeffer (jr. Richland/ELCO) triple jumped 34-4 1/2 and Candice Bullard (sr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) cleared 5-1 to tie for second in the high jump.

TUE 2/8 - KU 28, Delaware State 12 - Nick Nauroth (so. Quakertown/Quakertown Community) had a pin and Dominic Sabia (jr. Conshohocken/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and Kevin Kalbach (so. Downingtown/Downingtown) both won by major decision as Kutztown defeated Division I Delaware State, 28-12. Nauroth, wrestling at 133, scored his pin in 6:24. Sabia, 149, won his bout 11-3, while Kalbach, 157, shut his man out, 8-0. Brandon Clemmer (fr. Upper Perkiomen/Upper Perkiomen) (125), Jon Shaffer (jr. Conshohocken/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) (165), Roy Gecelosky (so. Annville/Palmyra) (174) and Steve Busch (fr. Exeter/Exeter) (197) all won decisions.
FRI 2/11 - KU 18, York (PA) 15 - The Golden Bears escaped York with an 18-15 win that came down to the final bout. With the score tied at 15-15, Andy Freas (so. Wescosville/Emmaus) picked up a 7-0 decision at 285 to lift KU to its 10th dual win of the season. Clemmer (125), Sabia (149), Kalbach (157), Ryan Wasser (jr. Northampton/Northampton) (174) and Busch (197) all won decisions.
