Steve Tyson - M ID Track & Field
(fr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) 

         Steve Tyson, of the men's indoor track & field team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Tyson won the shot put with a heave of 53-6 1/2 at the Princeton Invitational.  His mark is the best in the PSAC this season heading into next weekend's conference championships.

         WED 2/16 - WEST CHESTER 79, KU 76 - Kutztown nearly erased a 15-point second half deficit, but a 22-footer missed the mark as time expired, giving West Chester a 79-76 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win at Keystone Hall.  Bilal Salaam (sr. Wilmington, DE/Howard) paced Kutztown with 21 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks.  Bobby Eberhart (sr. Lancaster/McCaskey) scored 15 points and Ben Arnold (jr. Philadelphia/Christian Academy) grabbed 10 boards.  The Golden Bears trailed by 15 with 10:45 left in the game and were behind by 10, 68-58, with just 4:08 to play.  Down 76-68 with 1:16 left, Salaam got a layup to cut the lead to six and was fouled.  Salaam missed the foul shot and West Chester hauled in the rebound, but Dorian Sims stole the ball and Eberhart canned a three with 1:04 to go.  With the score at 76-73, Salaam was fouled and made one of two free throws to cut the lead to just two with 20 seconds to play.  The Golden Bears were forced to foul and WCU hit both free throws with just 11 seconds left.  David Moyer (sr. Tullytown/Pennsbury) went coast to coast to make it a two point game again with five ticks on the clock.  West Chester was immediately fouled and made the first foul shot, but missed the second.  Salaam rebound it and passed to Moyer, who took the ball down the floor and launched it as time expired, just missing his mark.  

SAT 2/19 - Mansfield 101, KU 86 -Salaam scored a season-high 25 points, but Kutztown fell to Mansfield, 101-86, in a PSAC East contest.  Salaam was one of four Golden Bears who scored in double figures.  He added nine rebounds and four blocks, becoming the third player in NCAA Division II history with 400 career blocks.  He now has 402.  Eberhart added 16 points, while Ty Brickus (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 15.  Frank Moultrie (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) scored 10.  Mansfield used a blistering hot second half to put the game away.  Up 43-33 at the break, Mansfield connected on 72.7% of its second-half field goals (16-22) en route to 58 points in the second 20 minutes.  Kutztown trailed by 13, 75-62, with 8:28 to play before mounting a comeback.  Eberhart hit a pair of free throws, Salaam nailed a three pointer and Brickus sank a layup to make it 76-69 with 7:10 left.  KU, however, was held without a field goal for the next three minutes as Mansfield opened an 85-70 lead.  With East Stroudsburg's loss at West Chester Saturday, the Golden Bears trail ESU (5-5) by one game for the fourth and final PSAC East playoff berth.

WED 2/16 - KU 67, WEST CHESTER 63 - Kutztown held off a late surge to upset West Chester, 67-63, at Keystone Hall in a PSAC East contest.  WCU attempted to tie the score, but a jumper with six seconds left missed the mark and Mercedes Van Wagner (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) rebounded it and was fouled.  She sank both free throws to ice the game.    Van Wagner and Rachel Weidensaul (fr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) each scored 14 points to lead KU.  Van Wagner also grabbed a game-high 13 boards and blocked two shots.  Monique Boykins (so. Yeardon/Penn Wood) turned in a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Megan Bainbridge (so. Minersville/Nativity BVM) added 13 points and five assists.  Despite leading at halftime, KU fell behind, 43-33, in the second half.  Weidensaul scored six-straight points to help KU within one, 43-42, then the Bears took the lead for good on a layup by Boykins with 6:45 to play.  KU never led by more than six down the stretch, as reserve guard Sara Elliot (jr. Hanover/Delone Catholic) scored all seven of her points - including back-to-back three pointers - to help KU hold its lead.  Kutztown outrebounded West Chester 49-27.

SAT 2/19 - Mansfield 75, KU 62 - Kutztown dropped a 75-62 decision at Mansfield in PSAC East play.  Trish Dudeck (jr. Shamokin/Shamokin) scored 14 points - all in the second half - off the bench.  Brady also scored 14.  Van Wagner scored nine points, while Boykins had seven boards to go with eight points.  Mansfield opened up a 43-25 lead at halftime, shooting 58.6% (17-of-29) from the field.  MU used a 19-6 run midway through the first to build its edge.  MU extended its lead to 25, 56-31 five minutes into the second half.  The Golden Bears, though, chipped away at the lead.  Dudeck scored all of her 14 points during a 27-12 run as KU got back within nine, 67-58, with 2:07 to play.  After an MU miss, Elliot's three pointer missed the mark with 1:29 to play.  After that, Mansfield connected on 6-of-8 free throws to seal the decision. Despite the loss, Kutztown remained in sole possession of fourth place in the PSAC East.  KU (4-6) leads Mansfield (3-7) and East Stroudsburg (3-7).

WED 2/16-SAT 2/19 - at PSAC Championships (at West Chester) - 5th/8 - The Golden Bears finished fifth of eight teams at the PSAC Championship held at West Chester with 158 points.  West Chester won the team competition with 712 points.  Clarion, IUP and Shippensburg also topped KU's total of 158 points.  Bloomsburg was sixth with 136, followed by Edinboro and Slippery Rock.  Brad Borek (sr. Southampton/William Tennent) set school record in the 200-yard breast with a time of 2:11.04.  He finished fourth in the event, with Steve McNeely (so. Glenolden/Monsignor Bonner) taking sixth in 2:13.17.  Borek also swam a fifth place time of 59.97 in the 100 breast.  McNeely was sixth in that race in 1:01.10 and Sean Bonifas (fr. Lancaster/Hempfield) took eighth in 1:01.81.  A pair of KU relays placed fifth, with three others finishing sixth.  The 400 medley relay of Ed Keglovits (sr. Kutztown/Kutztown), Borek, Scott Arnold (fr. York/Northeastern) and Greg Fulkerson (sr. Towanda/Towanda) finished fifth in 3:40.84.  Greg Fournier (fr. Warringtown/Central Bucks East), Rich Reshetar (so. Point Pleasant/Central Bucks East), Justin Piosa (sr. Lancaster/Hempfield) and Fulkerson teamed for a fifth place finish in the 800 free relay in 7:17.16.  Taking sixth in the 200 free relay was the team of Reshetar, Borek, Keglovits and Bonifas in 1:29.10.  In the 200 medley relay, KU took sixth in 1:40.29 with the team of Keglovits, Borek, Arnold and Reshetar.  The 400 free relay squad of Fulkerson, Reshetar, Borek and Keglovits placed sixth in 3:17.10.  Fournier finished sixth in the 1650 free in 16:58.99 and Piosa was 10th in 17:30.10.  Fournier was also 11th in the 1,000 free in 10:06.63.  Fulkerson turned in an 11th place and a 12th place finish.  He swam a 1:48.55 to finish 11th in the 200 free, a 4:53.15 for 12th in the 500 free.  Reshetar was 12th in both the 50 free (22.46) and 200 free (1:50.01).  Kegolovits finished 12th in the 100 back with a 57.97.

Women's Swimming (8-5, 6-4 PSAC)

Last Week's Action

Women:  at PSAC Championships (at West Chester) - 7th/13 - The Golden Bears finished seventh in a 13 team field at the PSAC Championships at West Chester with 268 points.  West Chester scored 1,073 points to win the PSAC crown.  Clarion, IUP, Bloomsburg, Shippensburg, and Cal (PA) took second thru sixth, respectively.  KU's 268 edged out Slippery Rock's 256 for seventh place.  Lock Haven, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Millersville and Mansfield rounded out the team standings. Three KU records fell at the competition.  Kelly Rowan (so. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby) set a school record in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.80, good for fourth place and an NCAA-B cut time.  In the 800 free relay, Ashley Singer (fr. Lititz/Warwick) led off with a Kutztown record 200 free (1:56.22), helping teammates Rowan, Staci McGinty (fr. Jamison/Central Bucks East) and Melissa Porter (sr. Wallingford/Strath Haven) set a school record of 8:02.48 in the race, placing eighth.  Rowan swam a second NCAA-B cut in the 50 free with a ninth place time of 24.71 and also took eighth in the 100 free (54.38).  Singer was also fifth in the 100 fly with a time of 59.71, 10th in the 200 fly in 2:14.23 and 11th in the 500 free in 5:14.86.  The 200 free relay team of Rowan, McGinty, Meghan Fenningham (jr. Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy) and Nikki Cattell (fr. Warminster/William Tennent) took sixth in 1:40.96.  McGinty, Singer, Porter and Rowan placed sixth in the 400 free relay in 3:37.44.  Cattell, Fenningham, Singer and McGinty finished the 200 medley relay in seventh with their time of 1:51.88.  Fenningham was ninth in the 100 breast in 1:08.17 and 14th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:31.26.   Colleen Brady (jr. Harleysville/St. Pius X) swam an 11:02.53 to finish 11th in the 1000 free and Beth Reasoner (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks East) was 17th in 11:08.87.  Brady also finished 13th in the 1650 free (18:35.68) and 17th in the 400 IM (4:55.91).  Reasoner was 16th in the 1650 free (18:51.55).  McGinty finished 12th in the 200 free (2:00.52) and 16th in the 100 free (55.35).

SAT 2/19 - at Princeton Invitational - unscored

Men:  Dave Bartolomucci (sr. Exeter/Exeter) won the 400-meter dash and ran on the winning 4x400 relay and Steve Tyson (fr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) won the shot put as the Golden Bears competed at the unscored Princeton Invitational.  Bartolomucci ran a 50.04 to win the 400 and then teamed with Billy Boorse (so. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley), Steve Hixson (fr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) and Tony Hegedus (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) to win the 4x400 in 3:21.78.  Tyson heaved the shot put 53-6 1/2 to win the event.  Kareef Wallace (so. Coatesville/Coatesville) placed second in both the 60 (6.92) and 200 (22.78).  De'Andre Pearson (sr. Norristown/Norristown) placed fifth in the 200 (23.22) and Hegedus was fifth in the 400 (50.88).  Mike Zebert (so. West Chester/Henderson) and Jesse Chew (so. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) tied for third in the pole vault, clearing 14-7 1/4.  Mike Provenzano (jr. Carlisle/Carlisle) was sixth at 14-1.  In the 3,000, Dan Wilde (so. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) took fourth in 9:01.87.  Matt Reffie's (sr. Wyomissing/Wyomissing) mark of 43-1 1/2 was good for fourth in the triple jump.  Boorse finished fifth in the 800 with a time of 1:58.77.  Joe Haughey (so. Richboro/Council Rock South) ran the 1,000 in 2:41.70 for fifth place.  Jordan Frank (fr. Cressona/Blue Mountain) cleared 6-0 3/4 in the high jump, finishing fifth.  Jim Dart (so. Havertown/Haverford) placed fourth in the shot put (48-7 1/2), while Chris Feighner (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) was fifth (48-6 3/4).

Women:  Danielle Mousley (sr. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) set the school record in the 1,000-meter run to lead the Golden Bears at the unscored Princeton Invitational.  Mousley finished second in the event, running a KU record 3:03.92.  Kaleena Lockard (sr. Berwick/Berwick) and Jenelle Stoner (jr. Denver/Cocalico) finished 1-2 in the shot put.  Lockard had the winning mark of 42-2 3/4, besting Stoner's throw of 40-1 1/4.  Michelle Hughes (fr. Warminster/William Tennent) joined them in the event, placing sixth (36-1 1/2).  Alison Maurer (jr. Lewisberry/Northern York) finished second in the 20-lb. weight with an NCAA provisional distance of 54-10.  Laura Kline (jr. Reading/Reading), Janelle Kostishion (sr. Hilltown/Pennridge), Renee Marchand (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) and Madonna Patterson (so. Philadelphia/William Penn) won the 4x400 relay in 3:59.86.  Kline took second place in the 400 with a time of 58.44.  In the 800, Patterson ran an NCAA provisional time of 2:15.66, good for fifth place.  Candice Bullard (sr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) went over 5-3 to finish fourth in the high jump.  Chrissy Procopio (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) long jumped 16-10 to place fourth.  Amy Schaeffer (jr. Richland/ELCO) placed fifth in the triple jump at 34-7 3/4, with Procopio in sixth at 34-5.  Amie Bennett (sr. Sinking Spring/Wilson) ran a 9.47 to finish fifth in the 60 hurdles, one place ahead of Jaci Pfeiffer (jr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) (9.49).  Steph Sukal (sr. New Tripoli/Northwestern Lehigh) cleared 10-6 to finish fifth in the pole vault.
