Athlete of the Week 

Ashley Singer - W Swimming
(fr. Lititz/Warwick) 

         Ashley Singer, of the women's swimming team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Singer's week was highlighted by a school-record breaking performance in the 500-yard free in wins over Mansfield and Edinboro.  Singer's time of 5:14.14 shattered the previous school record of 5:19.54 set by Claudine Gruver in 1997.  Singer won the event, as well as the 200 free.  She was also a member of KU's highest-finishing team at the Bob Mowerson Sprint Classic in Florida on Tuesday, helping the 200-meter medley relay to a 3rd-place finish.

         SAT 1/8 - Clarion 69, KU 63 - Clarion handed Kutztown a 69-63 loss in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover.  Frank Moultrie (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) paced Kutztown with 19 points, while David Moyer (sr. Tullytown/Pennsbury) scored 11.  Leading scorers Bobby Eberhart (sr. Lancaster/McCaskey) and Bilal Salaam (sr. Wilmington, DE/Howard), who combine to average 31.3 points per game, scored just six points each.  Kutztown trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half, as Clarion rattled off a 13-2 run midway through the half.  KU, however, ended the half with an 11-2 run, powered by seven points by Moultrie, to make it 33-25 at the break.  The Golden Bears continued to chip away at the lead, eventually taking a 44-43 lead on a jumper by Eberhart with 10:37 to play.  It was the first of four lead changes over the next five minutes.  The last lead switch started a 9-0 run that gave Clarion a 57-49 edge with 2:39 to play.  A layup, steal and pair of free throws by Moultrie pulled KU within four, 60-56, with 1:23 to play, but the Eagles hit 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.  Clarion outrebounded KU 45-30 in the game and hit 22-of-26 free throws (84.6%).

WED 1/5 - KU 68, ALVERNIA 59 - Monique Boykins (jr. Yeardon/Penn Wood) had 18 rebounds and six blocks as Kutztown dispatched Alvernia, 68-59, at Keystone Arena.  Jess Brady (so. Emmaus/Emmaus) and Katie Harlor (fr. Danville/Danville) scored 11 points each to lead the Golden Bears.  Harlor also grabbed seven rebounds, while hitting 4-of-6 from the floor.  Brady had six boards.  Mercedes Van Wagner (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) added 10 points and nine rebounds.  In the first half, Kutztown held Alvernia to just 8-of-39 shooting (21 percent) to enter the intermission with a 31-19 lead.  The Golden Bears led by just three, 19-16, with 5:15 left.  Brady made a layup that started a 12-3 run to close the half.  Kutztown built its lead to 18 points in the second half after a Rachel Weidensaul (fr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) free throw with 5:40 left to play.  Alvernia stayed in the game with a 19-8 to close the deficit to 62-53 with a minute to play.  After a three pointer by the Crusaders, Kutztown came up empty on their possession and Alvernia had an opportunity to close the gap even more.  But on the next possession, Brooke Martin (sr. Lock Haven/Central Mountain) blocked a layup.  Alvernia then fouled Nicole Germani (fr. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) who iced the game with a pair of free throws with 21 seconds remaining.  KU shot 40 percent in the contest (21-of-52).  The Golden Bears were strong at the line, connecting on 24-of-30 for 80 percent.  Alvernia, meanwhile, hit just 28 percent (23-of-83) from the field and converted just 5-of-20 free throws (25 percent).   The Golden Bears enjoyed a 56-to-45 advantage on the boards.

SAT 1/8 - Clarion 86, KU 41 - Five players scored in double figures as Clarion handed Kutztown its worst loss in two seasons, 86-41, in a PSAC crossover Saturday afternoon.  Martin scored 10 points for Kutztown, while Weidensaul scored eight.  The 45-point defeat was KU's most lopsided loss since a 54-point loss to California (PA) in December 2002.  Clarion jumped out to a 49-20 lead at halftime, powered by a 23-8 run over the final 12 minutes of the first half.  The Golden Eagles scored the first 15 points of the second half to extend the run to 38-8 over 17 minutes of game time.  Clarion shot 20-of-38 in the first half, while holding KU to 26.9% (7-26).  KU committed 25 turnovers, while CU had just nine miscues.

TUE 1/4 - at Bob Mowerson Sprint Invitational (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) - 8th/15 - The Kutztown men returned from the holidays for a trip to Florida and the Bob Mowerson Sprint Invitational.  The Golden Bears placed eighth in the 15 team field with 92 points.  KU's top finish came in the 150 breast relay.  The trio of Brad Borek (sr. Southampton/William Tennent), Steve McNeely (so. Glenolden/Monsignor Bonner) and Sean Bonifas (fr. Lancaster/Hempfield) teamed for a 1:43.24, good for fifth place.  In the 200 free relay, Greg Fulkerson (sr. Towanda/Towanda), Borek, Eddie Keglovits (sr. Kutztown/Kutztown) and Rich Reshetar (so. Point Pleasant/Central Bucks East) finished ninth in 1:48.34.  Borek and Reshetar joined Dan Pfost (jr. Kutztown/Kutztown) and Scott Arnold (fr. York/Northeastern) in the 200 medley relay, where the Golden Bears finished 10th in 2:02.02. 

SAT 1/8 - KU 124, EDINBORO 76 - Greg Fournier (fr. Warrington/Central Bucks East) won two individual events and swam on a winning relay as KU topped Edinboro 124-76 in a PSAC dual meet.  Fournier won the 200 free in 1:54.05 and the 500 free in 5:05.88, then teamed with Billy Dentler (fr. Chambersburg/Chambersburg), Chris Becker (jr. Reading/Schuylkill Valley) and Reshetar for a winning time of 1:34.07 in the 200 free relay.  Reshetar also won the 50 free in 23.08.  Justin Piosa (sr. Lancaster/Hempfield) won the 1,000 free with a time of 10:43.33.  Pfost posted a 2:09.26 to take the win in the 200 IM.  Arnold's 57.07 was good for the win in the 100 fly.  In the 100 breast, McNeely picked up the win in 1:03.86.  The win was KU's third straight.

TUE 1/4 - at Bob Mowerson Sprint Invitational (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) - 5th/14 - The Kutztown women finished fifth in a 14 team field at the Bob Mowerson Sprint Invitational in the team's return from winter break.  A third place finish in the 200 medley relay highlighted the Golden Bear efforts.  Colleen Brady (jr. Harleysville/St. Pius X), Meghan Fenningham (jr. Philadelphia/Nazareth), Ashley Singer (Lititz/Warwick) and Kelly Rowan (so. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby) combined for a 2:13.05.  Kutztown also notched a pair of fourth place finishes.  In the 150 breast relay, Fenningham, Christine Kolenut (jr. Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and Jennifer Houck (fr. Lancaster/Donegal) swam a 2:02.74, and in the 400 free relay, Singer, Katie Hinnershitz (fr. Temple/Muhlenberg), Staci McGinty (fr. Jamison/Central Bucks East) and Rowan teamed for a 4:21.30.  Brady, Nikki Cattell (fr. Warminster/William Tennent) and Melissa Porter (sr. Wallingford/Strath Haven) placed seventh in the 150 back relay in 1:48.22.  McGinty, Jill Pantelides (fr. Lansdowne/Archbishop Prendergast), Hinnershitz and Rowan took eighth in the 200 free relay (2:02.59). 

SAT 1/8 - KU 60, EDINBORO 35 - KU 74, MANSFIELD 21 - Singer set a school record and won two events as the Golden Bears defeated both Edinboro, 60-35, and Mansfield, 70-21, in a PSAC tri-meet.  Singer set a KU mark in the 500 free with a time of 5:14.14 and also won the 200 free with a 1:57.98.  Rowan won two events, as well, taking the 50 free in 25.85 and the 100 free in 57.20.  The two paired with Cattell and Fenningham to win the 200 medley relay in 1:55.64.  Brady won the 1,000 free with her time of 11:25.06 and Fenningham touched the wall in 1:10.24 to win the 100 breast.
