Athlete of the Week 

Laura Kline - W ID Track & Field
(jr. Reading/Reading) 

         Laura Kline, of the women's indoor track & field team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  She won two individual events and helped a relay to another win at the Susquehanna Invitational on Friday night.  Kline ran a 26.58 to win the 200-meter run, notched a 1:00.74 to take the 400 and led off the victorious 4x400 relay.  Also last week, Kline was named to the PSAC Fall Academic Top Ten as part of KU's field hockey team.  The special education major has a 4.00 grade-point average.

       WED 1/19 - KU 81, BLOOMSBURG 56 - Kutztown set a school record, hitting 60 percent of its field goals in an 81-56 dismantling of Bloomsburg in PSAC East action.  KU shot 15-of-26 (57.7 percent) in the first half and 15-of-24 (62.5 percent) in the second half to finish at 30-of-50 for the game.  The effort broke the previous mark of 59.2 percent in a game against Neumann in December of 2002.  Bobby Eberhart (sr. Lancaster/McCaskey) led four Golden Bears in double figures with 15 points.  He finished 6-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-5 from long distance and had three blocks and two steals.  Bilal Salaam (sr. Wilmington, DE/Howard) finished with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting, 11 rebounds and four blocks.  Ben Arnold (jr. Philadelphia/Christian Academy) went 5-of-9 from the field for 12 points and Dorian Sims (so. Reading/Central Catholic) converted 5-of-7 field goals for 11 points.  With his 11 rebounds, Salaam is now just one rebound from tying the school's career record of 864 by Marty Eggleston (1985-89).  The Golden Bears jumped out of the gate quickly, opening the contest with a 35-9 run, and entered halftime up 40-20.  The Huskies did not connect on a field goal for an almost 11-minute span in the first half.  The KU defense stymied Bloomsburg into just 6-of-33 (18 percent) shooting in the period, and held the Huskies to just 28 percent in the game.  Eleven different players scored for Kutztown.

WED 1/19 - BLOOMSBURG 68, KU 50 - Bloomsburg used a 17-4 first-half run to break open a close game and pick up a 68-50 win over Kutztown in a PSAC East contest.  Rachel Weidensaul (fr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) led KU with 18 points in the loss, KU's third in a row.  Jess Brady (so. Emmaus/Emmaus) added 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Golden Bears.  Kutztown led 8-7 in the early going before the Huskies' game-breaking run.  Bloomsburg took a 24-12 lead before a layup by Mercedes Van Wagner (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) and a three-pointer by Weidensaul halted the run.  The Huskies led at the half, 39-24.  A pair of free throws by Brady and a Weidensaul layup cut the led to ten, 47-37, with 10:56 to play in the second half.  The Huskies responded with a pair of jumpers and a three to quickly take the advantage to 54-37 at the 9:34 mark.  KU never got closer than 13 the rest of the way.

WED 1/19 - Bloomsburg 106, KU 95 - Kutztown dropped a 106-95 decision at Bloomsburg.  Sean Bonifas (fr. Lancaster/Hempfield) won a pair of events for the Golden Bears.  Bonifas swam a 2:08.30 to win the 200 IM and his 2:23.08 won the 200 breast.  Scott Arnold (fr. York/Northeastern) won the 200 fly with a time of 2:14.54.  The 400 medley relay team of Ed Keglovits (sr. Kutztown/Kutztown), Steve McNeely (so. Glenolden/Monsignor Bonner), Arnold and Rich Reshetar (so. Point Pleasant/Central Bucks East) won their event in 3:50.71.

WED 1/19 - Bloomsburg 129, KU 76 - Ashley Singer (fr. Lititz/Warwick) won three events, but KU fell 129-76 at Bloomsburg.  Singer won the 200 free (1:57.90), the 200 fly (2:14.81) and the 500 free (5:17.06).  KU also won the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:14.11 by Colleen Brady (jr. Harleysville/St. Pius X), Meghan Fenningham (jr. Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy), Melissa Porter (sr. Wallingford/Strath Haven) and Kelly Rowan (so. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby).

Men:  The Golden Bears had four first-place finishes in a strong showing at the Susquehanna Invitational.  KU had four finishers in the top five in the pole vault.  Mike Zebert (so. West Chester/Henderson) cleared 15-0 to win the event, with Mike Provenzano (jr. Carlisle/Carlisle) and Sean Loomis (so. Havertown/Haverford) taking second and third.  They each cleared 15-0, as well, while Jesse Chew (so. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) tied for fifth by vaulting 14-6.  Dave Bartolomucci (sr. Exeter/Exeter) and Tony Hegedus (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) finished first and second in the 400-meter dash.  Bartolomucci clocked a 50.23 for the win, while Hegedus ran a 51.25.  Steve Tyson (fr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) won the shot put with a heave of 51-8.  Tyson added a second in the 35-lb. weight (45-5) to his shot put win.  Chris Feighner (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) was fourth in the shot put with a mark of 47-7.  Kutztown's other victory came in the 4x400 relay.  Hegedus, Billy Boorse (so. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley), Steve Hixson (fr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) and Bartolomucci combined for a time of 3:24.32 in the event.  Feighner placed sixth in the event (42-10).  In the triple jump, Matt Reffie (sr. Wyomissing/Wyomissing) hopped, skipped and jumped a second place mark of 43-2 ½, while Cornel Crawford (sr. Wilkes-Barre/Meyers) finished fourth with a jump of 42-1 ¼.  The distance medley relay of Mark Simpson (fr. Upper Darby/Monsignor Bonner), Travis Pregnar (fr. Justus/Lakeland), Boorse and Pat McKeever (fr. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) finished second with a combined time of 10:50.6.  Vonkurt Redley (fr. Elkins Park/Cheltenham) finished third in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.04.  Jake Weider (fr. Macungie/Emmaus) took fourth in the 55m with his 6.64.  In the high jump, Justin Reichardt (fr. Birdsboro/Twin Valley) tied for sixth with a height of 6-0.  

Women:  Laura Kline (jr. Reading/Reading) won two events and was part of a winning relay at the Susquehanna Invitational.  Kline won the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.58 and notched the victory in the 400 with a 1:00.74.  She also joined Janelle Kostishion (sr. Hilltown/Pennridge), Jaci Pfeiffer (jr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and Madonna Patterson (so. Philadelphia/William Penn) on the winning 4x400 relay with a time of 4:09.54.  Kutztown athletes won four other events at Susquehanna.  Candice Bullard (sr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) cleared 5-2 to win the high jump.  Renee Marchand (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) was fourth at 5-0.  In the pole vault, Steph Sukal (sr. New Tripoli/Northwestern Lehigh) was the winner, clearing 10-0.  Alison Maurer (jr. Lewisberry/Northern York) took the 20-lb. weight with a toss of 52-0.  Chrissy Procopio (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) finished second in the event with a mark of 50-9 and Lauren Haak (so. Oradell, NJ/River Dell Regional) went fifth at 43-2.  In the shot put, Kaleena Lockard (sr. Berwick/Berwick) placed first with a throw of 40-1.  Janelle Stoner (jr. Denver/Cocalico) took second at 38-4, with Michelle Hughes (fr. Warminster/William Tennent) placing fifth at 35-6.  Kostishion joined Kline in the 400, and placed second in 1:02.25.  Danielle Mousley (sr. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) clocked a 2:25.40 in the 800 to finish second.  The team of Erica Kabbeko (fr. Birdsboro/Twin Valley), Kostishion, Patterson and Mousley placed second in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:52.05.  Laura Deller (fr. York/Dallastown) finished third in the long jump with a leap of 15-9, just a quarter inch farther than Marchand, who finished fourth.  Procopio was sixth at 15-6 ¼.  Stephanie Williams (fr. Harrisburg/Riverside) ran a 5:10.73 in the 1500 to place third, with Kristin Green (fr. Camp Hill/Camp Hill) placing sixth in 5:18.25.  Amie Bennett (sr. Sinking Spring/Wilson) took fourth in the 55 hurdles in 8.74 and Pfeiffer was sixth in 8.98.  Procopio's mark of 33-4 ½ was good for fourth in the triple jump, while Amy Schaeffer (jr. Richland/ELCO) finished sixth at 32-7 ¾.

Last Week's Action

SAT 1/22 - KU 40, Waynesburg 3 - Kutztown picked up a 40-3 win over Waynesburg at the Waynesburg Duals.  KU was the only other school able to attend the five-team event, due to the inclement weather over the weekend.  Nick Nauroth (so. Quakertown/Quakertown Community) at 141 and Andy Freas (so. Wescosville/Emmaus) at 285 both won by fall for the Golden Bears.  Nauroth scored his fall at 1:53 and Freas needed 5:53 to pin his man.  At 174, Ryan Wasser (jr. Northampton/Northampton) won a 16-3 major decision.  Jon Shaffer (jr. Conshohocken/Plymouth-Whitemarsh), wrestling at 165, won by decision, and Roy Gecelosky (so. Annville/Palmyra) grabbed a decision at 184.   Brandon Clemmer (fr. Upper Perkiomen/Upper Perkiomen) (125), Kevin Kalbach (so. Downingtown/Downingtown) (157), and Steve Busch (fr. Exeter/Exeter) (197) won by forfeit.  There was no match at 141.
