Last Week's Action
MON 1/24 - KU 79, Univ. of Sciences 66 - Kutztown University senior forward Bilal Salaam (sr. Wilmington, DE/Howard) established the school's career rebounding record, while the team broke the single-game field goal percentage record for the second-straight game in a 79-66 win over the University of Sciences. Salaam's second rebound of the game, off a missed three pointer by USP with 7:38 remaining in the first half, gave him 865 for his career - passing former record holder Marty Eggleston (1985-89). Salaam finished the game with four boards. He shot 8-of-10 from the field and 4-of-6 from the line for his 23 points. There weren't many opportunities for rebounds as Kutztown shot a blistering 61.7% (29-47) from the field in the game. The Golden Bears broke the team's single-game record of 60.0% set on January 19 vs. Bloomsburg. Bobby Eberhart (sr. Lancaster/McCaskey) had 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. David Moyer (sr. Tulleytown/Pennsbury) had 15 points and nine assists, while Ben Arnold (jr. Philadelphia/Christian Academy) added 12 points. KU shot 66.7 in the first half (16-24). Despite the hot-shooting first half, Kutztown led by just six, 36-30, at the break. The Devils got back to within a basket on two second-half occasions, the second, 45-43 with 13:36 to play. KU's defense clamped down, holding USP without a field goal until the 5:13 mark. During that time, Kutztown outscored the Devils 17-7.
WED 1/26 - West Chester 52, KU 50 - A pair of turnovers in the final minute cost Kutztown as the Golden Bears fell 52-50 at West Chester in a PSAC East contest. The game was a defensive struggle with both teams shooting under 38 percent from the field. Arnold paced KU with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Ty Brickus (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) netted 11 points, and Salaam had 14 rebounds and a pair of blocks.
SAT 1/29 - MANSFIELD 76, KU 75 - Mansfield escaped Keystone Hall with a 76-75 PSAC East victory against Kutztown Saturday afternoon. Kutztown had two chances to win the game in the closing seconds, but Salaam's jumper from just inside the three-point line missed the mark with three seconds left, and Brickus' desperation putback at the buzzer fell short. Brickus led five KU players in double figures with 18 points. Arnold had 17 points and eight boards before fouling out. Eberhart and Sims had 13 points each, while Salaam added 11 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks. KU rallied from a 17-point first-half deficit to tie the score at 48 with 15:59 to play in the game. Kutztown took its first lead of the game moments later when Eberhart hit a three pointer that made if 51-50. There would be four ties and six lead changes down the stretch. Kutztown took its final lead, 71-70, on a layup by Brickus with 3:32 to play. MU retook the lead, going up 76-71 with 1:31 to play. Eberhart sank a pair of free throws with 1:09 left and Sims connected on a pair of charity shots with 41 ticks left to make it 76-75. Mansfield ran the clock down on its final possession, but lost control of the ball and Sims stole it away. Sims brought the ball up, but was triple teamed and forced to pass to Salaam, who took his final shot at the top of the key. It bounced hard off the rim. After a battle for the ball, Brickus got a hand on it and tried to muscle it toward the basket, but to no avail.

SAT 1/29 - KU 73, MANSFIED 72 (2OT) - A pair of Brooke Martin (sr. Lock Haven/Central Mountain) free throws in double overtime capped a game that featured three buzzer beaters, as KU defeated Mansfield 74-73. With KU trailing 73-72 and just 1:20 left in double overtime, Martin went to the line and made a pair of free throws to give KU the win in the PSAC East showdown. Four Golden Bears reached double figures in scoring. Brady led KU with 19 points and also grabbed nine boards. Martin finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Van Wagner notched her second consecutive double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with a career-best five blocks. Weidensaul scored 10 points and handed out five assists. The win was KU's ninth of the season, matching the Golden Bears total for all of 2003-04.
