Athlete of the Week 

Ryan Loper - Baseball
(so. Boiling Springs/Cumerland Valley) 

         Ryan Loper, of the baseball team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Loper led the Golden Bears to a pair of victories in its first weekend at the Savanna Invitational in Georgia.  Loper was the winning pitcher in Kutztown's 11-5 win over previously unbeaten Armstrong Atlantic State, pitching five innings on Saturday.  He then drove in three runs on a pair of hits in KU's key regional victory over California (PA) Sunday.

       TUE 3/1 - Mansfield 95, KU 90 (PSAC Quarterfinals) - Kutztown University's men's basketball season came to a close with a 95-90 loss to Mansfield in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinal at Decker Gymnasium.  Bilal Salaam (sr. Wilmington, DE/Howard) led four players in double figures for Kutztown with 23 points and eight rebounds.  Ty Brickus (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville), Bobby Eberhart (sr. Lancaster/McCaskey) and Ben Arnold (jr. Philadelphia/Christian Academy) scored 12 points each.  Salaam had just one blocked shot in the game, tying for second all-time in Division II history with 408 blocks (Derek Moore, USC-Aiken, 1996-99).  Mansfield hit 57% of its shots in the first half to open a 47-35 lead at the break.  An 11-2 run over two minutes late in the first half helped the Mountaineers take the double digit lead.  MU led by as many as 16, 43-27.  Kutztown caught fire in the second half, hitting 59% of its shots after the break.  The Golden Bears chipped away at the Mountaineers' lead, which was as many as 14 in the second 20 minutes, getting the deficit below 10 with 16:00 left.  KU used an 8-0 run to make it 65-63 with 11:46 to play.  Dorian Sims (so. Reading/Reading) scored five of his nine points, including three free throws to cap the stretch.  Mansfield, however, answered with a pair of free throws and a layup on its next two possessions, as Kutztown faltered with two turnovers.  MU's lead was steadily between three and six until the 4:56 mark, when the Mountaineers hit three free throws and a trey to make it 84-72 with 3:20 left.  Mansfield hit 8-of-14 free throws in the final two minutes.  A pair of layups by David Moyer (sr. Tullytown/Pennsbury) in the last five seconds accounted for the five-point final deficit.  The loss brings an end to the career of Kutztown's seven seniors - Eberhart, Salaam, Brickus, Moyer, Vince Pease (sr. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt), Tyler Reynolds (sr. Athens/Athens) and Ryan Eisenhart (sr. York/Spring Grove).  The senior class is the first at to reach the PSAC playoffs in three straight seasons.

TUE 3/1 - Millersville 69, KU 56 (PSAC Quarterfinals) - Millersville ended Kutztown's season with a 69-56 win in PSAC Quarterfinal action Tuesday night.   Mercedes Van Wagner (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) scored 15 points for KU, which also got 13 points and 11 boards from Jess Brady (so. Emmaus/Emmaus) and 11 points from Rachel Weidensaul (fr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan).  The Golden Bears were victimized by matching a season high with 32 turnovers.  KU also allowed 25 offensive rebounds, en route to being out-rebounded 39-34.  Despite the turnovers and offensive boards, KU was able to cut a 12-point halftime deficit to three, 44-41 on a lay-up by Van Wagner with 8:27 to play.  The layup capped a 12-4 run.  With MU back up by six, Brady nailed a three pointer to bring the Golden Bears back within three, 50-47 with 6:45 left.  Kutztown came no closer.  The Marauders scored the game's next 10 points to make it 60-47 with 3:34 to play.  MU made 7-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes to preserve the win.
